Discussion I wanted to give some advice for cleaning very moldy tapes

I'm not sure if this is okay here, but I wanted to give some advice from my experiences in cleaning severely moldy and sticky tapes, and some huge do's and don't's I've encountered when watching other's videos on the matter. Pretty much in the hopes of helping people who preserve tapes, and are not familiar with cleaning really moldy tapes.

Do's:

  1. I really recommend one of those tape cleaners, like the tape saver you may see online. The mechanism is pretty useful especially to do quick passes after you do a careful manual first pass. I will however, condemn the cleaning pads they usually use for these machines, they're extremely destructive and I will go into it later in the don't's section.
  2. Do multiple passes and clean both top and bottom of the reels. Mold doesn't only sit on the top of the tape, it sometimes penetrates pretty deeply. Once you've unstuck the tapes and cleaned the reels, you may need to do multiple passes on each side of the tape to get rid of the mold. Sometimes it's taken my 5-6 passes before I see nothing on the cleaning cloth. By then the tape is really clean.
  3. Use isopropyl alcohol with the least water content. You absolutely need to use some sort of solvent to clean the mold, as trying to clean it dry can cause a lot of friction and damage the tape. Also the alcohol evaporates quickly, allowing you to clean quicker, and the moisture doesn't get left behind creating more mold later. Moisture is an enemyof VHS tapes.

Don't's:

  1. DO NOT use paper or towels to clean tapes. I've seen many who've used them with extremely mixed results, leaning more towards failure. These leave lots of lint on the tapes which covers the magnetic portion of the tape and also gums up the VCR heads. I recommend strictly lint free cloths, like the kind you clean your glasses with. They go for pretty cheap online for a bunch. I can't stress enough that you need to go lint free.
  2. I've also seen videos where the person would lift up the top plastic of the reel to remove a huge portion of the mold on top of the tape. This is also pretty destructive method in my opinion as it can potentially deform the reel and cause playback issues, I've run into that as well. It's best to take your time and unwind the entire tape, put it in between a lint free cloth and clean the mold from there. When the reel is empty then you clean the reel gently from top to bottom.
  3. When using a mechanical tape cleaner, you should be vary wary on the first pass. I've run into tapes that are so sticky due to mold that when you use these mechanical cleaners they tear when they get stuck. At worst go on the lowest possible speed or put the reels on the spindles and spin them manually by hand. Especially if it's a precious tape you want to preserve. Once you unwind each end completely and ensure the tape is sufficiently unstuck you can go quickly with the machine.
  4. Do not clean tapes and leave them for months on end. You should clean the tapes and aim to capture them as soon as possible. Cleaning these tapes isn't exactly a perfect process, and sometimes a bit rough on the tape and there's always the risk of leaving some bit of moisture behind. Try to capture as soon as you can.

A little bit for every season, but very happy with the spooky hits. Clerks The animated series finishes off my Kevin Smith collection so that's pretty neat. Freddy got Fingered is the blue Blockbuster tape. I think the Death Row Uncut is a bootleg, theres an "fbi" warning label sticker, but the title is written in crayon above it lol.

Digitizing My weird scrapheap challenge way of digitising VHS.

Post image
23 Upvotes

Before we start, I’m English so apologies if I use digitising instead of digitizing.

So this is a bit of a story but anyhow here we go:

I’ve recently started doing some digitising for people and like most starters I bought a 30 quid USB thingymabob off Amazon before deciding it wasn’t worth the shipping fee let alone the price.

Thus I did what any tight Yorkshire man who had been wronged out of 30 pounds would do and set about trying to build a new system that wouldn’t break the bank.

I kept the same VHS which is a Sony DVD/VHS combo I’ve had from being a youngster. Reading up I found out you needed a TBC so whilst bored in some meeting at work I set about looking for a DVD player that would handle this for me. Research suggested a Panasonic EH-50 was good and I found one for £35. I still needed a capture device but one was about to appear like a hero from the scrap yard of equipment in my office.

The story goes a bit off topic here but stick with me.

Alongside the VHS I was doing some miniDV tapes for someone but I couldn’t get hold of a FireWire cable and the only camera I could get was a Sony HDV mini cam which had HDMI out.

“Buzzin” I thought as the deadline doomed. I grabbed a Camlink 4K from work and plugged it in and set a tape going and went to the pub.

Imagine my dismay to discover upon my return that the cam link hadn’t accepted the miniDV format and I had a lot of wiggly lines. I had to wait til morning to check as the beer had taken hold and I wasn’t sure if I was drunk or nothing was working. It turned out the resolution was too low or too high for it. Probably too low but I was hungover and can’t remember.

Anyhow I set about upon trying to work out how I could get a signal from my camera into my Camlink. Being the hoarder I am I dug out my old Bose AV centre which had been languishing in a cupboard, and lo and behold it worked. it took the feed from the camera and spat it out in a 1080 format the Camlink could accept.

Back to VHS.

Not wanting to purchase any more equipment I decided to use this for VHS too.

So now my setup is as shown.

I go S video out of the VCR into the DVD player. This then goes component out into the Bose AV-35. That then upscales the 576i to a 1080p feed that the Camlink takes.

It’s a bit shonky, it’s not pretty but it works!

I thought you’d all like this story of scraping bits of equipment together and the fact I got to tell my wife “I told you so” as I was pulling old boxes of equipment out that she told me to bin!

Was about to give up looking for the day.
One thing annoys me about this collection though, Fists of Fury came out in ‘71, Chinese Connection in ‘72, but here they have Chinese Connection first in the order for the box art. (It’s the same on either side)

Is there a reason for it or did they just screw up?

Discussion What’s the rarest VHS Boxset you own?

Thumbnail
gallery
101 Upvotes

Saw someone make a post about what the rarest tape you own was, so I’d thought I do something similar but with boxsets instead.

For me, it’s the “Kirby: Right Back at Ya! - The Kirby Collection” released by Funimation Entertainment and 4KiDs Home Video. It features three volumes that were previously released between 2002-2003, bundled in all one set. A DVD Version of the collection exists and is more common online.

I got it back in 2023 for $90 (see image 7); it only appeared once before the same year and after I bought this set, it never appeared anywhere online ever again.

Out of the three volumes, A Dark & Stormy Knight is the hardest to come by of all the releases. It rarely appears online for sale on its own.

Future releases from Funimation and 4KiDs Home Video were DVD exclusives only, which makes these releases on tape more valuable than the normal DVD releases.

This is considered the Holy Grail of Kirby Merchandise that I have besides the 2009 Sanei Dedede Plush. He unfortunately doesn’t have a hammer.

I have the Boxset with my other KRBAY Physical Media Collection as of the moment and have more that I’ve been hunting down online that’s coming later. (see image 8).

I made a post regarding this set before a few years ago, but I didn’t see anyone talk about it as much then.

Feels like the Crash (2004) of the 90s, Ex Marine inspires students to put in some effort in their studies. Movie felt more like an after school special. They even had to play Coolio a few times throughout to keep you engaged. Your thoughts on this movie?

Technical Support Best VCR cleaner tape for CRT/VHS combo unit?

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

I know a lot of people say you should just manually clean your VCR, but in my case, that's not really practical. My VCR is built into a large, 23" or so Panasonic tv along with a radio. The VCR functions, and audio sounds great, but the picture is virtually unwatchable. (The photos are via laserdisc)

So do you have a specific kind of cleaning tape you'd recommend? Thanks in advance!

Discussion Any Gremlins VHS Experts in here? Trying to determine Release Order.

So as the title says I am trying to figure out how many different variations of the original Gremlins VHS were released. I am only talking about US released NTSC versions for the sake of this post.

So far for the original Box there is (Possibly 1985). There is also the issue of two tone tape vs all black tape not sure if that matters.

No UPC
UPC on SIDE
UPC on Left Rear
UPC on Center Rear

Later there was: (Possibly 1999)
White Warner Brothers Slipcover
White Warner Brothers Clamshell

Also I am trying to figure out in what order were they released.

Digitizing Testing Out My Capture Device!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Using one of my old Dragon Ball tapes for testing. Looking forward to digitizing some of my mom's home videos but is this the best quality I can get? I know it looks really good here but my mom's tapes are especially low quality and I was wondering if there was a special cable I could get online that I never knew about for a clearer picture.

Discussion How long do we have before a majority of VHS tapes in the wild degrade beyond use?

Knowing that there are so many tapes out there in hot, humid evironments, stored incorectly, etc. Just curious how long into the future these tapes will last before their material degrades beyond use.
