Hello, and welcome to r/UniversalHollywood, the fan-run subreddit for all things Universal Studios Hollywood, located in sunny southern California!

Whether you’re a first-time visitor to this subreddit, a first-time or prospective visitor to this theme park, or a veteran of both, all guests are welcome here.

Feel free to ask questions, provide tips, share your photos, videos, and reviews, and start chatting about the first and original Universal Studios park.

***Before you post and comment, be sure to read the rules in the sidebar and follow them to make sure your posts don’t get deleted.\*\**

Also, please read the frequently asked questions below or use the Reddit search function to see if your question (or a similar one) has already been answered before you ask. This cuts down on the clutter and may help you find an answer faster than waiting for a response from one of our readers. Thanks!

QUICK LINKS:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

How crowded is [insert date here]?  OR When is the best date to go?

Everyone has different tolerances for crowds. If you want to know how generally crowded your park of choice might be, Is It Packed can provide a very simple forecast of crowd levels up to about two months in advance on their crowd calendar.

Of course, a bit of common sense thinking can go a long way here, too. Spend some time thinking about when people are most likely to visit, and your intuition will probably be correct.

For example, the park will generally be busier during:

  • Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays
  • School breaks, though these are generally spread out over a long time frame since the colleges and local K-12 districts have minute differences in their assigned breaks.
    • Spring breaks (mid-March to mid-April)
    • Summer breaks (mid-June to mid-August)
    • Thanksgiving breaks (entire week of Thanksgiving including the last Thursday of November)
    • Winter breaks (mid-December to early January)
  • 3-day weekends for mandated federal holidays (yes, the day of the holiday itself will also generally be busier)

Is Express worth it for [insert date here]?  OR How long will the wait times be for [insert date here]?

Everyone has different comfort levels for waits and enjoyment levels for attractions. If you want to know the wait times of attractions, Thrill Data is a fantastic resource that lets you find historical data and look at charts across hours, weeks, days, and even months. Search for the park you want to view, then change the data’s date at will.

If you want to determine if Express is “worth it” for you, think about how long you’d want to wait for an attraction, compare that to the wait times you see on Thrill Data for recent days and the same time period from the past year, and make a decision for yourself. Express will generally cost $100+ when bought on its own in the park for the day, so take some time to seriously consider if the option is right for you.

FastPass is not a thing at Universal parks. That was a Disney thing (and it no longer operates there, either). If you’re having trouble finding tips for how to use “Fast Pass” at Universal when searching online, try using the term “Express” instead.

If you’re still on the fence about what is “worth it” to you or not, watch some ride POV videos on YouTube for the attractions you’re interested in that also include the queues. You’ll then be more informed about what experience you’re in for and, after taking the numerical data into consideration, can better decide for yourself.

I need to change the date of my ticket; how do I do that? OR I have an issue with the tickets I bought. What should I do?

The folks on Reddit can’t help you with those kinds of questions. You should email the customer service team via this link or call the proper ticket support number: 866-258-6546

Please remember that ANY POSTS OFFERING TO BUY, SELL, OR TRADE TICKETS, PASSES, AND OTHER GOODS WILL BE REMOVED. Giveaways are allowed only after written documented approval is received from the mod team and are subject to be removed if the terms for the approved giveaway do not match the actual giveaway. Thank you for your cooperation.

Can I add Express to my Annual Pass/third-party ticket for the day? OR Can I add Early Access to Super Nintendo World in Hollywood to my Annual Pass/third-party ticket for the day?

YES! For Early Access to SNW in Hollywood, you must purchase it online before the date of your intended visit. Be aware that both ticket add-ons are able to sell out, so buy early if you want to secure them. For Express, this can be added on at any time via the purchase ticket page. Just remember to purchase your add-on for the same date as your ticket.

In what order should I tackle each ride?

Use Thrill Data to see which attractions build up crowds quickly, and try to hit those when they’re not yet at their peak. Guests will generally find that starting in the Lower Lot is more effective. If you’re arriving early, you’re generally better off hitting the attractions that support Express before the people with Express can hit them.

I can't see the hours for the next month or beyond. When are they posted?

Hours for the next month are posted in the middle of the current month. Check back on the 15th or later of the current month to see the next month's hours. There will only ever be two months displaying hours at a time at most: the current month and the next month after the current month.

What is the best food in the park?

Use the search function. We’ve got a multitude of threads available with a multitude of answers and perspectives to suit your tastes.  To view all Universal Studios Hollywood dining options, see here.

Can I bring outside food into the park?

YES!  Outside food is allowed into the park as long as it isn’t in glass containers or hard-sided coolers.  For more information, see here.

Are there any banned items?

For information about banned items, see here.

Should I go if it rains?

Days with rain in the forecast tend to see lighter crowds.

On days with light rain, all attractions will remain open, though some live entertainment will be moved or cancelled for the day.

On days with moderate rain to severe rain, most attractions will remain open, and some live entertainment will be moved or cancelled for the day.

On days with extreme weather or hazardous conditions, USH will put out an announcement over their social media platforms that the park will be closed. In such instances, the severe weather policy will take effect for the day.

Casual Discussion Everything I ate at Horror Nights last night

Such a fun night! I did express unlimited so every house I did twice except for Sinners and Ozzy, I did those three times. But all the walking and screaming works up an appetite.

I decided on getting my One Wish Churro. This was literally after running into Nikki. We chatted for a bit and needless to say my looks got her obsessed with me! ( side note: when me and her were talking the USH worker kept everyone moving along which was fun cause it made the interaction more personal )

Lower lot I decided on clown cafe. I got the bloodbath brisket fries. Brisket, bbq sauce, jalepeno ranch, crispy onions. The brisket was good and some fatty pieces which I enjoyed. At first I said this was a small portion but it ended up being enough!

Lastly, the butter beer. I couldn’t leave without my butter beer. So good!

I wanted to try more but man does the price add up. The doughnut was calling my name but the churro and butter beer was already a lot of sugar 🫪

Until next time Horror Nights!!

Trip Planning Question/Tip/Guide Horror Nights on the last day (Nov 1)??

How crowded is it really on the day after Halloween?

I wasn't expecting it would be the most expensive Sunday ticket, which makes me assume it's a popular night to go. But, why?

Just trying to figure out if it makes sense to go that night if it's going to be jam packed.

Thanks!!

Meetup Announcement/Request HHN Hollywood (Round 2)

I went to HHN once this year but it rained so I wanna go again w/o weather interference. I would like to go either as a duo or group. I’m seeing if there’s anyone down to buy Express or GA (only if you have a “special” pass though). I’m tryna avoid the long lines so if you’re on the same page, let’s schedule a day.

Trip Planning Question/Tip/Guide Open rides during Horror Nights

Hi everyone! I’m going to Universal Horror Nights for the first time next week and I was wondering how you know which rides will be open? We got the after 2PM Express pass so we want to ride the rides that will close at night first. I have the app but I can’t find anything there.

Also, how is the wait for the Fast and Furious ride? I have the app and it’s showing as 70 minutes but I’ve heard the estimate isn’t accurate.

Trip Planning Question/Tip/Guide Hollywood Drift Lines

Hi all, coaster enthusiast here. Coming to the park for my 2nd time solely for Hollywood drift this upcoming Monday. I’m wondering if lines are still around the 2 hour range? I’m planning on buying the early entrance for Super Nintendo world so I can have a quick start to get in line. Does the ride generally open right on time with the park? Anything else I should know? Trying to get the most rides as possible, so any tips are appreciated. Thanks!

Trip Planning Question/Tip/Guide Is fan fest as physically exhausting as HHN?

Hi. I’ve been to HHN the past 3 years including this year. I was cosplaying as luffy and another attendee told me about fanfest in the spring.

I would love to attend if they announce one piece as part of the line up.

But I’m curious how physically draining is it?
For HHN my friends and I get early access and get there around 3pm. Hop on a few rides then start at a house and try to hit them all. We didn’t get them all this year. My legs gave out. Average of 22k steps each year.

I planned better this year. Started off with running shoes and halfway into the night I swap to my Tevas to ease pressure and let feet breathe. It helped tremendously.

Low back, calves, quads, hamstring, back of knee, arch, heel. All down for the count and I’m limping the next 1.5 day.

I think the longest wait time for us was dinners at 1h.

Is fan fest just as physically draining and same wait times?

Edit. Forgot to specify Hollywood. If that matters

Trip Planning Question/Tip/Guide First time visit. Express Unlimited?

Hello,

I'm visiting this week on Thursday with my 3 boys. My youngest is on the autism spectrum and all about Mario, so Super Nintendo World is going to be his favorite. He is able to tolerate lines and crowds, but I'm curious about maximizing the day and exploring the whole park.

I see there's the ticket with one express ride per ride and the express unlimited. I looked at the various crowd trackers today and the wait for Bowser/Mario Kart got up to about 50 minutes.

Is the express unlimited worth the extra $50ish per person? It's our first trip so any input is greatly appreciated.

Throwback Post Battle of Galactica at Universal Studios Hollywood – Vintage 1980 Postcard

Post image
12 Upvotes

Here's a look inside Battle of Galactica at Universal Studios Hollywood, captured in a vintage postcard photograph from 1980.

Inspired by the original Battlestar Galactica television series, this Studio Tour attraction operated from 1979 to 1992. Guests encountered Cylons, animatronic figures, live performers, and elaborate laser effects as they rode the Studio Tour tram through the attraction.

The attraction eventually made way for Back to the Future: The Ride, which opened in 1993.

For anyone curious about what the experience actually looked like, we've also preserved vintage footage from 1979 showing part of the attraction in operation. It's not the complete show, but it offers a fascinating glimpse into this long-gone Studio Tour experience.

Watch the archival footage here:

Battle of Galactica – Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour (1979)

This postcard and video are part of the Cow Missing historical archive, dedicated to preserving the history of theme parks, attractions, and experiences that are no longer around.

Did anyone here experience Battle of Galactica in person? I'd love to hear your memories of this classic Studio Tour attraction!

Personal Trip Photos/Videos Trip review

Quick recap of two days at the park this week. It was me, my husband, and our 9-year-old son, and we all love roller coasters. We bought Express Passes for day one and used a BOGO ticket for day two.

Day one
We had Nintendo early entry and knocked out Mario Kart right away, then rode The Mummy several times back to back.
We were disappointed that the Jurassic ride was closed for refurbishment.
We headed to Fast & Furious and waited in line for about an hour. Turned out our Express Passes did work on it, so we rode a second time later in the day. For what it's worth, we bought them in early August and they were honored. It’s a great ride but very intense!

Rides that impressed us
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey: Genuinely impressive. We rode it twice, though the first time there was a technical issue and the ride stopped.
Transformers: I was surprised how much I liked it. I expected it to make me really nauseous, but it wasn't bad.
Other highlights
The Studio Tour and the Waterworld show were both very entertaining, and my kid loved them. Also Voodoo doughnuts!

The not-so-great
Food: Really disappointing. Everything was mediocre and, of course, very expensive. Next time I'd bring more snacks in our backpack.
CityWalk escape room: Very disappointing for the price. We've done a lot of escape rooms around the world, and this one was poorly run. It started late, and they kept giving us hints we didn't ask for, which made it hard to concentrate. I’m pretty certain parts of the room weren’t functioning as intended. We escaped but I would not recommend.

Overall: A great couple of days. We rode everything we wanted to. We stayed at the Garland hotel and the trolley was great and accommodations were just perfect.

Trip Planning Question/Tip/Guide HHN Wednesday vs.Thursday (Does it matter?)

Just wondering, before I buy my early entry tickets (I'm going either the 28th or 29th). If anyone (workers or frequent pass holders) had any opinions, if either night has slightly less crowds, or is it so slammed that it's not going to even matter? Thank you!
