Hello all,

As this subreddit has gained popularity there has also been an increase in posts that would be better suited elsewhere. As stated in the title, the primary purpose of this subreddit is for learning Ukrainian. The secondary purpose of this subreddit is for discussions about Ukrainian culture but it is intended for that to be still at least tangentially related to the Ukrainian language. Please consider this list of subreddits for your other Ukraine-related needs.

Усім привіт,

Оскільки цей сабреддіт набув популярності, також зросла кількість дописів, які були б доречнішими в інших спільнотах. Як зазначено в заголовку, головна мета цього сабреддіту — вивчення української мови. Додаткова мета — обговорення української культури, однак такі обговорення мають бути принаймні дотично пов’язані з українською мовою.

Для інших тем, пов’язаних з Україною, будь ласка, перегляньте цей список сабреддітів.

Help with making a speech understandable (translation)

Hello!

I have a couple of friends who are getting married, and I am giving a speech at the wedding. The groom is Ukrainian, and his mother is in from Ukraine to attend the wedding but she does not speak English, so I am looking to translate my speech so she has an idea of what I am talking about. Unfortunately, I don't know Ukrainian, so I am relying on Google Translate and other online translators.

If someone would be willing to take a look at my translation and tell me if it is understandable that would be beyond appreciated! :))

Усім привіт! 🇺🇦

What does “заварити кашу” mean?

Today’s Ukrainian idiom is заварити кашу!

Can you guess what it means? 👀

Here’s an example to help you:

Він знову заварив якусь кашу на нараді, і тепер усі розгрібають наслідки.

Drop your guesses in the comments! Don't be afraid to be wrong — that's how we learn! 😊

Can you guys show me examples of ”normal” everyday handwriting?

I want to start learning how to read/write in cursive, but ive read that the way its taught in schools (and online) is not how most ppl write in everyday life. Which is exactly the same situation as in my country (sweden), if they even teach cursive these days… So i was curious if some native speakers in this sub could take the time to write something and upload a pic? Would be really interesting to see some examples of real life practical handwriting. Maybe you can write some sentences from ukrainian national anthem or something :) дякую

UKRAINIAN & ENGLISH TUTOR | 12 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm Sofia, a native Ukrainian speaker. I've been teaching English for 12 years, and I also teach Ukrainian to learners from abroad.
I've spent years on the road too, living in a van and like a local in different countries. So I teach the way people actually talk, slang included, not just textbook rules.

What I teach:
🇺🇦 Ukrainian: from scratch or speaking practice, with explanations in English
🇬🇧 English (if it's not your first language): speaking, grammar, Business English, IT English
How I work: we mostly speak, make mistakes (totally fine!), and I tailor each lesson to your goals. Online, one-on-one, and relaxed.
Price: €20 / $23 per 60-minute lesson.

Message me with your level and what you're after, and we'll see if we're a good match 🤗

Just wanted to say from a natural I’ve English speakers perspective візьми ковдру і накрийся з головою is a very odd phrase

Particularly since the more sensical to me візьми ковдру і накрий головю з нею is also totally fine. Just weird that those phrase can coexist.

Patronymic/Matronymic for non-binary people

Hello everyone!

I know how to use they/them pronouns in Ukrainian, but the question I stumbled upon is how do you create an enby patronymic?

Володимирович, Володимирівна, Володими--?

Please share your suggestions!

Update: Please no comments like "there's no way to" or "patronymics are outdated anyways. I agree, but I came for ideas, not discouragement. It's not a legal question, it's rather hypothetical/for fiction writing.

What's something Ukrainians generally find to be corny or cheesy?

I'm dipping my toe in the language after recently discovering my distant relatives were from Odesa. But I was curious if there was something that Ukrainians find corny? In my experience for example, rom-coms are generally thought of as corny or cheesy, despite being well loved. Dad jokes or puns also fit in this category I think. What comes to mind in Ukrainian culture that is "so bad, it's good"?

Listening to some music while canning tomatoes today, and I know some of the words in this song but I can’t find a full translation! The song is “One, Two” by Nicolai Bobkoff and the Domra Orchestra.

Ukranian/Russian bilingual content?

Привіт!

Some context: I was born and raised in the U.S. in a Russian speaking household, however my family is from western Ukraine. I want to visit the places where my parents and grandparents grew up in and/or spent most of their lives, however I understand that speaking English is probably a better option than speaking Russian the further west you go these days.

I want to improve my Ukrainian abilities by engaging in bilingual Russian/Ukrainian media. Here's an example of what I'm looking for: https://youtu.be/Cb7eUwtdR54?si=VglAd9JVDhXJC7af

The host in this video speaks Ukrainian while the guest speaks Russian. I feel like this is a great way for me to use my understanding of Russian to slowly transition into understanding/speaking Ukrainian through context clues instead of just cramming vocabulary or raw-dogging Ukrainian content.

Does anyone have recommendations for similar content, perhaps something relevant to politics/pop culture/music? Feel free to respond in whatever language!

Дякую!

Philosophical Cossack fiction

Hi, i was wondering if anyone has any underrated recommendations of ukrainian cossack fiction books that have a similar philosophical depth to “musashi”(or the manga based on it), that are not the obvious picks like “чорна рада».

Ive made a list of books that could be interesting potentially but haven’t read any of them yet, so if anyone did read them it would be great to hear your thoughts.

I want something that isn’t an idealized heroic nationalist depiction, but something beyond that.

Here’s the list that i mentioned:
Cossack literature list:
Василь шевчук Око прірви, Мор
Григорій бабенко Шляхом бурхливим
Юрій мушкетник, на брата брат, Яса,
Роман іванчук Мальви, Орда

I am really interested in Ruina period in particular
