🗨️ Discussion LOA should’ve been a TR2 remake

I’m very excited for LOA (despite some concerns I have regarding animations and hand-holding), but I think they should’ve remade TR2 instead. We already have 3 versions of TR1 with Anniversary, Anniversary Edition, and the remasters.

It would’ve been an exciting launching point for unified Lara. The original game is combat heavy, so fans of the Survivor games would be right at home with all the shooting. Classic fans would be happy to get a remade version of a fan-favorite adventure, and hey, with modern settings they could make Venice a hub-like area or something.

It’s even the game that started the whole “locking the butler in the freezer” thing which so many gamers remember.

I think it’s a missed opportunity. I know people will say “they’ll remake TR2 next!” but who knows if this game will do well enough to warrant another remake?

Doesn't make much sense story wise I think. TR1 is the best choice to remake for the launch of a "new" timeline so it makes sense they'd go with that. I DO think TR2 is coming too though!

It could theoretically work because the first three classic TR games were very much standalone episodic storylines. You could play TR2 before TR1 and absolutely nothing about TR1 is spoiled

I’d just hope if the re-remake of TR1 is successful enough they might do TR2 as well

This, the classic games were almost all standalone.

I kind of want Tomb Raider to follow a similar pattern that the Resident Evil games have been following. With a remake being released AND new games and stories. And it would be really cool if they kept the “legacy” name in all the remakes.

So “Tomb Raider: Legacy of Xian” would be the name of a future game

u/Lelixandre_- 18h ago

It does seem like they’re doing that already. We’re getting LoA and Catalyst as the entirely new game.

Any source on that? As far as I'm aware it's all rumors that they want to keep remaking old titles.

TR1 has already been re-made though. Capcom didn’t re-remake RE1.

5

u/padamodin 18h ago

That’s because resident evil one was already remade, and that’s not to say they’re not going to after code Veronica. I’d say we have a solid chance of getting a resident evil one remake.

u/DoggTheGhost 18h ago

TR1 was also remade though. Back in 2007

u/ExiledCourier 9h ago

TR1 was remade in 2007. Poorly.

There is the same argument being made in the RE subs. Many people still wanted another Remake of 1 to bring it in line with the 2/3/4 remakes. The same can be said for TR. Anniversary is fine but it’s still a nearly 20 year old game at this point.

2

u/Tamerlatrav 19h ago

but they should have and is rumoured to developping it

In the leaks before Veronica remake was announced, RE1 was listed for a remake, so I wouldn't be surprised

u/TheHeavenlyStar 19h ago

It would be the most stupid thing not remaking TR2 and eventually 3. TR2 offers huge nostalgic value. I’ll be damned if it’s not in the cards.

u/deceiver986 9h ago

4 is still the best out of the three and deserves a remake as well.

1

u/ExiledCourier 9h ago

4 features a lot of obnoxious backtracking in the second half and brain dead easy combat compared to the original trilogy. In 2 and 3 you had to get in close to ranged enemies to dodge and outmaneuver their shots, but in TR4 they just made Lara able to take gunfire like Wolverine so there's never any reason to try to dodge or jump behind enemies.

•

u/TheHeavenlyStar 2h ago

I do agree 4 gave us a hard time with the backtracking and figuring shit out but I'm 100% certain a modern remake of 4 would be a piece of cake because today's gen and players could never. TR 3 and 4 were nightmare difficult games for us children back then, Core were like, you played 1 and 2, you heard the girl, go figure shit out yourself!

•

u/ExiledCourier 16m ago

A lot of TR4's difficulty came from not knowing where or what to interact with. The action indicator in the remaster solved a lot of that.

We’ll get a TR2 remake as well so really we aren’t in a worse situation

7

u/canookianstevo2 20h ago

Hopefully this leads to TR2 remake (I'd kill for a TR3 remake actually, mostly nostalgia reasons for me).

I agree, I wasn't terribly excited when they announced LOA because we've been there & done that 😆 part of the magic of a TR/adventure game is to explore the unknown and not know what's around the corner. But hopefully it's a solid foundation for more titles to come.

1

u/ExiledCourier 9h ago

Just think of it as an opportunity to undo some of the errors of Anniversary.

7

u/Kai-of-the-Lost 20h ago

Starting "unification" with the 2nd game would have been a very poor idea

3

u/kashmutt 16h ago

Anniversary is dated though. It's still a lot of fun but it doesn't play like a modern game. I feel like they will give us a TR2 remake anyway.

That being said, I'm not the biggest fan of TR2. It's my least favorite from the first four games.

3

u/Andy_0L 20h ago

The franchise usually does well, even with titles not everybody agrees with, like the reboot trilogy, so it's very much possible that a TR2 remake could come after Catalyst. If they had started with 2 right away we would have missed the chance of having 1 with these graphics, meanwhile the other way around there's a stronger possibility for them to continue remaking other games

1

u/tealaburst Frozen Butler 20h ago

But we already have anniversary, they could’ve just remastered it with updated graphics and controls. Added some fan service and called it a day.

1

u/Andy_0L 18h ago

The issue with those LAU games is that they already look more modern compared to the older ones, sure, they could upgrade some textures, make some tweaks, but they wouldn't be able to call them "remasters" because they wouldn't look that much different, unless they completely change the graphics with the ones we have now, which is probably not going to happen, that's why remaking them makes more sense.

1

u/ninjabell 12h ago

They are not going to feel that similar at the end of the day. I also have a hunch that LoA will have more mercs.

3

u/pastadudde 20h ago

nah, if you want to relaunch Tomb Raider as a 'back to Lara's roots' thing then TR1 makes sense because all the locales she visits are abandoned + ancient places. TR2 has way too many modern-setting levels, plus with some of them being in a row.

LoX - Legacy of Xian

7

u/nick_clark 20h ago

I totally disagree, TR1 unification remake makes totally sense to be the first, I would totally hate the RE approach of getting remakes out of order (canon in that franchise is a mess mind you). We will get TR2 remake eventually.

2

u/tealaburst Frozen Butler 20h ago

I mean, TR canon is much worse with the multiple reboots

4

u/nick_clark 20h ago

But thats what they are trying to do with the unification, retelling the classics to make them sense with survivor Lara. We need these stories to be retold again. But even them, canon in every TR timeline made sense by their own, Resident Evil has different scenarios in the originals and canon being a mix of them, and then you have the remakes where Claire A/B and Leon A/B barely have differences, it was such a missed opportunity to see the true canon of RE2. I think in this sense, Tomb Raider is being smarter.

2

u/ShockedPeekachu 20h ago

I'm sure they will do it if LoA is successful enough.

2

u/CaseFace5 Dagger of Xian 19h ago

I just hope we get a Resident Evil style schedule from here on out. Remake, New game, Remake, New game etc. so after catalyst (assuming they all sell well enough) we get a TR2 remake and so on.

2

u/blankgap 16h ago

I think remaking TR2 before TR1 would have been more of a risk. I think if LOA does well, it gives them enough of an opportunity to move on to TR2 but it would have been a weird one to tackle first.

For one thing, TR2s plot is much more bare bones and needs an extensive rewrite for modern gaming.

2

u/babedar1000 15h ago

I’m playing TR2 now for the first time and the whole way through (just got to the mountains with the eagle) I’ve been thinking a remake of this would be incredible. I think what they can do with it would be so much more impressive than what a second remake of the first will be

2

u/jajay119 11h ago

If LOA sells well there’ll likely be a TR2 remake anyway

2

u/ExiledCourier 9h ago

I think LOA is an opportunity to undo a lot of damage that Anniversary did to the series.

4

u/Fuzzy-Classroom2343 20h ago

maybe it gets the resident evil treatment

wouldnt mind that at all

2

u/xdeltax97 Moderator 19h ago

I’m hoping they’ll pull a Resident Evil and remake them all

I love the Dagger of Xian
but companies like crystal dynamics, embracer group and amazon are not able or willing to deliver something like that

we have already a remasters of the tomb raider games

and they already "reimagined" tomb raider once
i would prefer them to leave their greedy, soulless, soul sucking corporate fingers from the tomb raider games

they can make up their own tomb raider games, they bought the ip
tomb raider-gijoe team hero extraction shooter and society of raiders football 2028 and a reboot every 3 years

i only would hope that they leave the original tomb raider games in peace:) they deserve better than yellow paint and fishing mechanics and quick time events

u/SexyShave 20h ago

Anniversary was disappointing, so I'm glad TR1 is getting another attempt.

0

u/tealaburst Frozen Butler 20h ago

It was, but I would prefer if they remaster it. Revamp the combat, controls, and graphics.

2

u/SexyShave 10h ago

I wouldn't be happy with that. Part of why I was disappointed with Anniversary was how many broad changes there were, and how streamlined it was.

I have issues with some of the things I've seen of Legacy so far, but I'm hoping it might still address my main issues with Anniversary.

1

u/ExiledCourier 8h ago

Yeah, I'm still angry that they nerfed Lara from an experienced criminal to greenhorn plucky rogue in Anniversary. Let's also not forget that it introduced the world to the character that has done the most damage to the series, Richard Croft.

"My corpse has been ruining games since 2007." -Richard Croft

-1

u/CarefulArgument 19h ago

They uh did that already.

2

u/tealaburst Frozen Butler 19h ago

Talking about Anniversary not TR1

1

u/WhiteBoyRickSanschez 20h ago

I question if they plan to do this at some point.

1

u/ExcellentOutside5926 20h ago

It looks like the goal is to remake all the games in a unified approach starting from 1.

There are rumours that a remake of 2 and 3 have already been greenlit.

There’s also a rumour that VII–IX Remastered has been picked up by a different team (not Saber).

1

u/gorka_vy Underworld Thrall 19h ago

I think its because they want to do more stuff with Natla, Tihocan and the gang.
So they may want to reintroduce them to newer fans. Storywise I also think TR1 is better than 2.

1

u/makroprosopus 19h ago

Does anyone know why Nicobass stopped developing remake?
I played it back in 2017, and the demo was great.

1

u/youshouldbeelsweyr The Scion 9h ago

Except it shouldn't because the story does not tie in whatsoever to what they're looking to accomplish.

1

u/Odd_Sherbert8470 8h ago

I mean, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a TR2 remake in the plans already. To me it sorta looks as though they might be going to give Tomb Raider the Resident Evil treatment, with the unified timeline and all.

1

u/alienrefugee51 20h ago

Would’ve made more sense, since we already have Anniversary as a TR1 remake. We’ve been thirsting for a full TR2 remake since Nicobass’s, The Dagger of Xian demo.

2

u/ExiledCourier 9h ago

Anniversary wasn't a very faithful remake and the story elements they changed caused a lot of fractures in the fanbase.

1

u/Ok-Annual615 12h ago

Tr loa is changing story elements and expanding onto the map. So using trA wouldn’t have made sense, they are starting the unification with loa, and will then proceed to remake tomb raider 2 using loa as the starting point.

0

u/tealaburst Frozen Butler 20h ago

That’s what I think too. They could’ve remastered Anniversary with updated graphics, controls, adding new outfits and stuff before TR2 remake.

1

u/ForFansSake 20h ago

I've been saying this since it was announced.

1

u/Baroque4Days Atlantean Mutant 9h ago

To be fair, if LOA is good, no reason they can't continue through the original series. TR1 and 2 had awesome little stories. TR3 would be great to see with modern graphics. 4 would work, 5 would be a bit weird, maybe DLC, and then they could go ahead and do the originally planned Angel of Darkness trilogy.

Honestly, my big concern right now is how the Atlantis stuff looks in LOA. I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but the devs talking about magic and fireballs again, the mutants looking... weirdly swole plus the ones they showed were meant to be mummies yet had like 2 pieces of wrapping on them like... was there a lack of wrapping in Egypt? XD

I kinda wish they had the balls to make it a surprise sci-fi instead of just going with the generic T, Q and N were Gods and the Scion is magical. The idea that Atlantis was a factory, the Scion probably being like some ridiculously advanced CPU, the tannoy announcing the hatching time and stuff, that was just so unique IMO.

Just glad we got the remasters tbh.

I agree and there is too many modern additions with this remake. They definitely took the easy way. This is like the 4th company to work on this franchise and all the trailers and gameplay showcases are underwhelming to me. TR 2 is begging for a remake though. Those gun enemies are atrocious, their range is too long, they deal too much damage and Lara has to get in range to shoot them, but the enemies see Lara and do damage. Some levels are poorly designed like the Rig Levels, or the underwater levels. Full blown Remake is needed for TR 2.
