1940s My beautiful grandmother on her way to work in NYC, early 1940s.

Context from my mother: "That’s on the way to Manhattan. It was called 'Coat Corp.' She worked there as a secretary, and met Grandpa—a presser at the time—at a holiday party, where she got up to the mic and sang."

She lived an amazing 94 years, passed back in 2019. If she were alive today, she would've been 101 years old this year!

Pre-1920s 14-year-old Richard Pierce, a Western Union Telegraph Company messenger in Wilmington, Delaware, photographed by Lewis Hine in May 1910. When this photograph was taken, Pierce had worked as a messenger for 9 months and worked from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

He was also reported to smoke and visit houses of prostitution. Hine photographed Pierce as part of his work for the National Child Labor Committee, documenting the working and living conditions of children across the United States. His work was monumental in the introduction of child labor laws in the United States.

The rest of the Early 80’s yearbook was interesting to flip through but man, this felt like a genuine time capsule.

I collect WWI portrait photography of US soldiers and wanted to share this shot of Peter P. Light who served in the 31st Infantry Regiment in Siberia. He even married a Russian nurse!
