[Spiering] Skip Schumaker on the Rangers missing the playoffs: "The reality is we didn't play well enough against under .500 teams. The frustrating part is like not figuring out different ways to help beat the teams that we should have beat."

Gotta figure out why we went from best pitching in baseball in 25 to absolute ass, and why we just can’t seem to get offense consistent ever since the trophy

79

u/n3gr0_am1g0 15d ago

Because Skip and CY decided they didn’t need Mike Maddux anymore.

41

u/Darth_Candy 15d ago

To be fair, the Angels’ pitching got MUCH better after firing Maddux less than one season after hiring him.

22

u/n3gr0_am1g0 15d ago

True, I think sometimes you get coaches and personnel that just work great together and that’s what it seemed like with our pitching staff and Maddux. Not sure why they decided to not retain him after our best ERA ever and the emergence of Leiter as a good starter.

7

u/SteelSecutor 15d ago

Money. They didn't want to pay the man.

5

u/Legitimate_Fix7948 15d ago

I don't think that's it entirely. I love Maddux, but he's kind of stuck in the past. Just becuase our pitching was good in '25 doesn't mean maddux was the reason.

deGrom who is a veteran, several times this year against a righty would just spam sliders down and away, over and over. eventually he would either walk the batter, or they would get a hit. every now and then he would get the out. If my dumb ass knows that's not how you approach an at bat, deGrom, the catcher, everyone on the field and in the dugouts know that's not the way either. Pretty sure Maddux wouldn't have made a difference.

It's very telling that once he got let go from the Angels, thier pitching got considerably better. Basically from one of the worst pitching staffs to one of the best.

3

u/MavsTurnedBucksGuy 15d ago

I don’t necessary disagree with your premise, but I don’t understand how DeGrom regresses this year without Maddux is an example of us not missing Maddux

2

u/Legitimate_Fix7948 14d ago

I can see that. but I would think someone would say, hey that's not working and it not require Maddux at all. I said it several times...he just couldn't here me.

It is possible that perhaps the front office could kinda tell that he was losing his touch and let him go elsewhere. All I know for sure is, the Angels did significantly better without him.

1

u/dmr196one 12d ago

DeGrom is an old pro. He knows better than anyone when something is wrong.

14

u/systemnate A. Beltre 15d ago

And let him go to a division rival. WTF?

4

u/Original-Albatross37 15d ago

Yeah this was unforgivable

3

u/dbzmah N. Ryan 15d ago

Wrong. Owners were to cheap to pay him what he was worth

1

u/dmr196one 12d ago

Bc pitchers pitch well here. Earn a big contract that the team wont pay CY goes and signspitchers off the garbage heap

12

u/EliteStat18 15d ago

Age of deGrom and Eovaldi. I think people forget Eovaldi was pitching cy young level last year whereas he was kind of just average this year.

Leiter was injured and had a step back when he did play. Rocker took a slight step up but he's still nothing more than a 5th starter at best. Gore was disappointing. Quantrill was good though.

1

u/dmr196one 12d ago

The biggest problem i see is them having to rebuild the pitching staff year after year.

8

u/Ninjabear11 15d ago

Mike Maddux is the answer

2

u/dbzmah N. Ryan 15d ago

Yep. That's on our cheap ass ownership not wanting to pay him, despite his clearly successful product. New owners are hamstringing any progress. 2023 should have been the beginning, not the outlier.

1

u/Alternative_Dot_9640 15d ago

Didn’t seem to be the case for the Angels

5

u/chrisofchris Y’all remember Sam Huff?? 15d ago

Anyone who took that gig was getting fired.

2

u/stevekresena Rangers 15d ago

The angels were just a chaotic dumpster fire though. Top to bottom org

5

u/The_Zhuster 15d ago

The former isn’t that difficult to understand when you know they’ve been running out the same sort of pitchers every season: low ceiling arms that cannot miss bats that rock unsustainably high strand rates and low HR/FB ratios. Even the home/road splits that season were jarring enough to tell you they were getting away with hard contact too often at home. They also didn’t repeat the defensive output they put up in 2025 to bail pitchers out just as much.

152

u/__Art__Vandalay__ 15d ago

Could have stopped at “we didn’t play well enough”

26

u/jfb1027 Rangers 15d ago

Yea nobody really wants to hear any of this.

42

u/316Harrison 15d ago

This just in: no fucking shit.

7

u/Greatcookbetterbfr 15d ago

I don’t know…maybe the manager could have figured this out over 6-months? Isn’t this what he is paid to do for fucks sake?!?!!

53

u/Akerfell J. Jung 15d ago

Sadly, the reality is that this iteration of the Rangers is a below average, lifeless squad that is oftentimes difficult to even watch. The vibes at the park just seem off every time I go.

39

u/n3gr0_am1g0 15d ago

The team always looks miserable and lifeless. Playoff spot on the line and Seager gets a homer to put them within two runs in the bottom of the 9th and zero emotion out of him or anyone else in the team. We’ve got to bring in a locker room guy.

40

u/Akerfell J. Jung 15d ago

The organization's answer to a dead team is to just turn the volume up to 11 inside the park lol.

17

u/SkuzzleButtte Dong Prophet 15d ago

I completely understand what your saying about Seager, but in his and the teams defense there the Astros were already up 9-0 and there’s no doubt they were keeping up with the score

8

u/n3gr0_am1g0 15d ago

Fair enough, I guess I’m just frustrated with Seager’s attitude especially given his salary. The last two years everyone’s been saying they just need a little more of a spark and Seager acts like it’s too much to ask of him to pump the team up after a great play.

2

u/COCma 15d ago

Not his job and not why you’re paying the guy

5

u/n3gr0_am1g0 15d ago

That kind of attitude is why the team is where it’s at. I’m not saying Seager has to be the team captain, I’m just saying do what the game asks of you. It’s not going to kill Seager so every now and then show some emotion to pump the guys up. He’s making how much money and batting .226? Least he can do is cheer when he does get a hit.

1

u/dmr196one 12d ago

I agree with COCma. Seager is not demonstrative and its not his job. I suspect he is more of a clubhouse guy. Baseball is nit like football or basketball. You dont have folks s cheering and hollering all the time.( unless its playoffs or a World Cup team is in attendance)

3

u/Potato-baby Moreland 15d ago

I miss Hedgie

2

u/Upbeat-Natural-7120 15d ago

I know. We need a locker room guy (or guys) badly. Totally agree that there is no life in this team whatsoever.

20

u/bmcthomas 15d ago

Led by a manager who has all the personality of a slab of particle board.

2

u/wn0991 14d ago

They need hype man Hedges back, he may not have been the best on the roster but damnit, he brought the energy

1

u/dmr196one 12d ago

Disagree. Durant was always ready to kick ass. So was Nicky Lopez. So was…. I guess youre right. Hard for the solution to carry the team.

20

u/NineteenG 15d ago

It’s definitely the heart of the clubhouse. They don’t seem into it. None of the players seemed to have any urgency and, at least from my perspective, are happy collecting a paycheck before they move on.

17

u/ImpendingBoom110123 Hello Win Column 15d ago

We miss a dude like Garcia who absolutely bleeds emotion.

15

u/rphf 15d ago

Man. Wouldn’t you just love to see Wash and Maddux back on the staff?

9

u/n3gr0_am1g0 15d ago

Reportedly Wash has been trying to get back to the org and CY has been shutting it down.

6

u/Definitely-Not-Devin J. Gallo 15d ago

Wash and Bani are both better managers than Skip, in my opinion. Bani won 88 games with Beltre as the only guy with more than 4 WAR in 2015. 95 in 2016 with a better roster and pitching, but still.

I get that there are injuries and down years, but everyone deals with that and the great teams seem to have guys at the helm that can get the most out of their guys whether people are healthy or not.

The Yankees didn't have Judge for ~100 games for Christ's sake and they still figured out a way to win 93 games this year.

4

u/rphf 15d ago

That’s a bummer to hear.

3

u/beefytrout A. Beltre 15d ago

I'd want Wash managing as much as I'd want the 2011 squad back on the field.

5

u/Ninjabear11 15d ago

Yes, Wash deserves one last chance at redemption

6

u/JuicedBoxers E. Carter 15d ago

You don’t say.

13

u/AFKlay 15d ago

Not sure "the reality is" needs to be said, Skip. It's pretty fuckin obvious.

4

u/wakeuphicks00 15d ago

Well they beat themselves does that count

3

u/smoke_inyoureyes A. Beltre 15d ago

Pretty much. Rangers had a combined record of 14-27 against the Angels, Twins, Athletics, Tigers and Reds this year. (Somehow managed to go 10-2 against the Royals and Blue Jays tho)

Pair that with losing the boot 4-9, it’s no surprise we’re on the couch today. But equally frustrating to think about the games this team did blow this year. Chris Martin against the Astros comes to the front of my mind, that felt like a real turning point in the season that we just never fully came back from, even tho this team did show more fight at the end than in it has in previous seasons.

2

u/Untjosh1 15d ago

Delusional. This roster sucks

2

u/ephenssta29 A. Beltre 15d ago

I mean he's not wrong.

But looking at the last 10 years, we're a .462 team with no division wins and one lucky playoff run off our only winning season. This team just isn't competitive. We somehow pulled it all together for one magical season, but outside of that it's been a decade of mediocrity. I know they probably won't make any significant moves in an offseason ahead of what looks like it could be a nasty lockout, but I really wish we'd just fucking blow it up and look to the future instead of clinging to almost-.500 baseball.

6

u/stevekresena Rangers 15d ago

That one good year built on the back of Jon Daniel as well.

5

u/Quite__Bookish 15d ago

And that one good year probably bought CY a long leash that he hasn’t shown he deserved

3

u/bummer28 A. Beltre 15d ago

Help me figure this out because I’m struggling to understand the logic with this.

Everyone complains we don’t draft well and we don’t develop well, yet every thinks blowing it up and starting over drafting and developing guys will somehow be a better option?

2

u/ephenssta29 A. Beltre 14d ago

I'm not really sure I have a solution, and I'm not sure I'd say the only way to try resetting the roster is to hope we magically get good at drafting and development. But it's clear this iteration of the roster isn't working, neither is what we've tried for the last decade outside of 2023, which looks increasingly flukey as time goes by. Right now we just seem entirely directionless, and it's massively disappointing.

1

u/bummer28 A. Beltre 14d ago

I completely agree it’s not working and I don’t have the solution either. I just see everyone keep saying to blow it up and start over but I don’t see that working. Different doesn’t always mean better.

1

u/dmr196one 12d ago

We rush the players we are developing. They bring them up a year, maybe 2 bc they dont have a triple a team. Not too many years ago, their best prospects were at 2a and the guys that were serviceable for short periods of time. That my theory anyway

2

u/marcomac29 Rangers 15d ago edited 14d ago

The sweep against the Angels earlier in the year comes to mind immediately.

I literally remember saying at the time, “this will come back to bite us at the end of the year”

2

u/periwinkablu Rangers 14d ago

Too many injuries. Can't win a season with a field full of utility guys. Even if Zeke had the best season of his career, he is not Cory Seager and Freeman is not Jung. Not even close. I thought Lopez did a great job at second but if everybody is healthy you're probably putting Zeke in that spot. I think assuming everybody is healthy the only real changes I would make is going out and finding a real catcher and doing something with Evan Carter. That being said, even with all that, we were one win away from the wild card. Pitching rotation is a crap shoot but that's the same with every team unless you have elite money and talent. Honestly I was surprised how good some of the guys we had were. I mean Quantrill had the best season of his life. So you know things to look forward to next year.

1

u/cougarelite 12d ago

True, although I'm to the point that we need to figure something out as well with Jung. He's only good for about 3 months per season, unfortunately.

3

u/MrVernon09 15d ago

The team didn't make the playoffs because they didn't play well enough against under .500 teams. They didn't make the playoffs because of inconsistent hitting and pitching the entire season. Two of the worst offenders were Mackenzie Gore and Kumar Rocker. Even Degrom and Eovaldi were inconsistent this season.

2

u/El_alacran214 15d ago

Never forget '23. Go Rangers!

3

u/pot8odragon 15d ago

Bats. We don’t have consistent hitters because this team overly focused on pitching to the detriment to the whole team

3

u/EliteStat18 15d ago

Pitching was more of the problem this year than hitting. 24 and 25 was the opposite.

1

u/pot8odragon 15d ago

Yet that’s where the majority of our resources were spent in the offseason. They’re building their team around losing assets

1

u/EliteStat18 15d ago

Yet that’s where the majority of our resources were spent in the offseason.

There was pretty much hardly any spending this off-season. They made the Gore trade, but they also signed Danny Jansen and then traded Semien for Nimmo which ended up being a great deal offensively.

Next year I think the pitching is going to be cooked unless Eovaldi and deGrom turn back the clock or Gore, Leiter, and Rocker step up. I don't like the chances of either.

Breaking: The Rangers Suck

2

u/Top-Pin3147 15d ago

I understand the disappointment from fans after this maddening season, but the Skip slander is kind of crazy imo. Nothing about this comment is wrong, we sucked against the worst teams in baseball, particularly in division.

Team also dealt with incredible amount of injuries and we found out the hard way DeGrom and Evo are not reliable top end starters anymore. Scrap everyone making considerable money or set to make money in the next few seasons and build around Walcott and Langford (maybe?).

There’s questions everywhere here, but I may be in the minority in saying Manager isn’t one of them.

1

u/ImpendingBoom110123 Hello Win Column 15d ago

You didnt manage well enough either, boo boo bear. You have to get significantly better in year 2.

1

u/SteelSecutor 15d ago

Oh, you think he ought to be back for a second year?

https://giphy.com/gifs/9sjrjyaKedAzbqCbnM

1

u/ImpendingBoom110123 Hello Win Column 15d ago

Depending on who we could get I would not be sad if he got sacked. I don't like getting read of a manager after 1 year but it also wasn't great.

1

u/beefytrout A. Beltre 15d ago

Maybe less pinch hitting and better bullpen moves, Skip.

1

u/RunningWolf63 13d ago

Hitting, defense sub par for the whole team. Major league team. Minor league performance except for Latz. And yes Josh Jung is injury prone and hence unreliable.

1

u/Some_Morning8504 9d ago

It’s time to clean house in the front office….this year’s trade deadline is inexcusable since we did nothing to help the team make a playoff push OR shed any of our bad contracts. Gotta do one or the other, but we did nothing 🤬

1

u/Individual_Heron_171 15d ago

Leaving the office a little early today to avoid chaos at Daiken. Hoards of Asstros fans amassed at the gates when I drove by on Crawford. Yeah, I’m a little salty.

-3

u/Soggy__Waffle 15d ago

I’m no baseball guy, but just watching the games I don’t know what value Pederson and Burger bring besides .230 hitting, and why not let foscue play full time

3

u/revengefrank 15d ago

Burger and Pederson? The #1 and #2 home run hitters on the team?

1

u/SteelSecutor 15d ago

Um. That's actually his point. The rest of the team's hitting is sub par enough to not warrant discussion.

2

u/revengefrank 15d ago

Burger and Pederson are perfectly good role players who also shouldn’t be the best bats in a lineup. It seems like we agree that the real issue is the Seagers, Jungs and Langfords not meeting expectations due to injury and underperformance

3

u/stevekresena Rangers 15d ago

Couldn’t agree more on foscue but Peterson was actually good this year, though he shouldn’t be in the position of carrying an offense. Not when you have a seager, Langford, Jung and Nimmo to extend a lineup. When those all falter and you’re best bat is a mid 30’s overweight lefty that you platoon? Not a good spot to be in

2

u/OnlyHereforRangers Y. Darvish 15d ago

Foscue's issue is he has nowhere to play defensively and he sucks against RHP so that limits him to DHing against LHP. He needs to solve one of those issues over the offseason if he wants to play full time

1

u/EliteStat18 15d ago

Joc had a 134 OPS+ on this team, Jung was the only every day player that hit better.

I kind of agree that Burger is not that good though.

0

u/Due-Fun-489 15d ago

They’re a .500 team.

7

u/Wemedge 15d ago

Not quite.

-7

u/onaboat13 15d ago

Even with the injuries we had a team that should have been able to compete.

No Seager- we still have Duran that can play short and has a great bat. Foscue or Freeman steps in.
No Jung- Freeman decent at 3rd.
No Joc- The guy is a parking cone anyways. All he does is hit a bomb or get out.

We had the right team. Not sure we had the right skipper.

5

u/worst_user_name_ever I. Rodriguez 15d ago

You can’t go .500 and miss playoffs 9 out of 10 seasons and say you had the right team.
