⚖️ Legal / Eviction Unfair Towing

Hi! I live at a larger apartment complex in an okay area of Philly. Parking has always been an issue with people parking wherever they want / illegally or not moving for months and months on end. There are tow signs posted around the lot that say those parked illegally will be towed and subject to fine.

One morning I saw that my car was located 30 minutes away (per my airtag) and looked out the window to see they were repainting the lines in the parking lot. I went down to the parking lot, and the building manager was actually standing right where my car had been. I asked him if it would've been towed if it was right there, and he told me no. This led me to believe it was stolen before eventually calling the towing company to check if they had it, which they did.

I had received no notice in my email of the striping project. My roommate did receive the email (which was sent at 630pm friday and the project started monday, which is arguably not far enough in advance anyway imo) but the email stated that cars in the areas of work needed to be moved or they would be towed. I did not receive this email, and my roommate didn't see it til later. Say me and my roommate don't speak at all, how would I have known it was happening?

After asking for compensation for the tow fees that totaled up to $250, management told me that because I was technically parked illegally, the tow was justified. My car was parked in a row of other cars, but on the end where there are no longer spaces.

My issue is that they did not notify me of the situation and give me a chance to move my car. My other issue is that no one is ever towed from the lot for parking illegally. Cars sit illegally for days on end sometimes. I was also in that spot because cars get broken into all the time, and I refuse to park somewhere in the dark around the building.

Yes, I understand that I was parked illegally by definition, but the fact that they never tow and only did so once they needed to, and the fact that I was not notified me is extremely frustrating to me.

Building management is not very understanding of my point and hasn't even made any offer or even the slightest bit of compensation like free parking for a month. They fail to respond to emails and when they do it's short and written super poorly. I can't seem to talk to corporate as they said they would talk to my building management who would then talk to me.

Its frustrating me because technically I was in the wrong, but if the building actually towed cars off the log regularly and notified me of the striping project, I would have moved.

Please let me know what you think or what you would do. I want my money back because I'm a fresh college grad and $250 is a lot at this point in my life, but I know that that may not be possible.

This partially isn't even about the money to me at this point, it's that they can get away with managing the building poorly and wronging tenants without facing any consequences.

TLDR
- car towed from apartment bc they were repainting lines
- building manager told me no cars were towed from that spot when i went down to see what was going on
- i was never notified of this happening so had not chance to move my car
- i was technically parked illegally, but they have never towed the cars that park illegally daily or sit on the lot untouched for months taking up valuable spaces
- building management has no sympathy for the situation and does not acknowledge their wrongdoings
- i believe i deserve some sort of compensation but because i think im the only one legally wrong here

Aside from the compensation aspect, there are many many issues with this building and management. If anyone has any advice for actually getting change to happen (more security to prevent car theft, better building upkeep, etc) how can I make that happen? Lots of people have issues with the complex and management, I'm definitely not the only one.

🏠 Landlord Issue Landlord claiming I’m violating CCR

I’m not sure if anyone remembers but now9 months into my 12mo lease my landlords suddenly decided that they don’t like that my work provides me with transportation. I am a salesman for a dealership and I drive new/fixed inventory to ensure it’s driving as it should or inventory cars that need miles put on them for various reasons. I drive on a dealer plate at all times and there is only ever 1 vehicle on the property at any given time. My landlords initially said to no inventory vehicles
On the property and that the tenant vehicles need to be registered with them. They also initally mentioned that they didn’t like the “assortment.” So I guess the fact that I drive a new car Almaty every day. Anyways, I emailed them every single make and model of the dealerships inventory, along with my plate number and said I would like to register all these vehicles with them. It seemed to be resolved. Now she comes to the front door with a paper, a “lease violation” and it says “….. we had a discussion in which I notified you that we have CCR's for this development which states that no business or business activities are allowed.” I am not preforming any business activities. I am not selling or working on cars. I am simply drive the car my job tells me to drive. Furthermore, I contacted the city hall and they said my address is not under any CCR/HOA. I have a few more months here and need to manage until then. Buying a personal car simply because of my landlord is not in my budget right now. What do I do?

🔧 Repairs / Maintenance My door was left unlocked

• Upvotes

US MO - My apartment management did pest control today.

They gave the required 24 hour notice. I locked my cats up in the bathroom to make sure they wouldn't get out. It's October and one of my cats is black. I'm extra diligent this time of year.

They were at my apartment at 11am. I know this because I had to run home to grab a textbook I'd forgotten and they were inside. I got home around 4pm. My door was unlocked.

I'm not very happy about it. Cursory inspection, nothing was missing. And if anything was going to be stolen, it would be the PS5 and 55" TV in the living room. It's still unacceptable.

How should I address this? I don't want to go in too hot and combative, but I want to make it clear that this can't keep happening. The last time they did pest control, my door was left unlocked as well. And my freezer was hanging wide open. Why would they even need to touch my freezer for pest control? I didn't say anything that time because I was completely swamped with life and just didn't make it in. Phones messages and emails are never returned. I'm busy af now, too, but considering this is the 2nd time in a row, I need to say something.

🏠 Landlord Issue Is my landlord entitled to know where I move even after giving them a PO box address?

Im in the process of buying a house and will be giving my landlord 30 day notice. I was asked multiple times to let her know my new address when i move so she can send me anything I left behind.

I packed up everything, not a single thing left behind and had to get a PO box due to her opening and reading my mail in the past.

I told her, she can send it to my PO box. She said, the post office is too far(7min drive) and they dont accept certain items. Again, I told her i would have everything squared away. She is pushing on the subject. But im standing firm, I want my damn peace and quiet!

Iv lived with non-stop ceiling stomping for 5+yrs...

Update: for people asking about the deposit. I got it back today(cash) after my landlord took pictures and looked through the apartment. She was impressed with the cleanliness and my handiwork(patched prior moving in wall holes, replaced 33 ceiling tiles, regrounted bathroom and kitchen floors, carpet cleaned, and repainted) I was able to let my LL know that i am NOT required to give her my new address if I've paid the last of my rent and received my deposit. She googled her LL rights in front of me and saw that I was correct. I informed her that the area we live in does not give her the right to my updated personal information and that she is more than welcome to find the information online.

This all started after I she opened and read my mail 5 months ago and saw that I was started receiving SSI back pay. I informed her that i became disabled prior to receiving anything, but she took that as "i can now see what she makes monthy, so im going to raise the rent." She said she would raise the rent $600.00 when she renews my lease in 3/2027(yearly renewal). I told her that she could not go based off of my SSI backpay.

The apartment is not worth the amount she is asking and would need to be gutted due to mold exposure, and cat ammonia smell (LL fosters cats(20+) and cleans litter boxes 1x a week). I had to cut off internal A/C for 3yrs and use 2 air purifiers to maintain smell. I run 2 dehumidifiers daily for 15hrs to control high humidity. I have asked her for help regarding these issues for 4yrs now and she has told me to literally deal with it or would give me a bucket of "MOLD KILLING PAINT PRIMER" to repaint the walls if I started to see discoloration.... im beyond done with this bs.

🏠 Landlord Issue Eviction notice

I have been renting at my apartment for 5 or 6 years. The first 4 or 5 years, I have always been on time with my rent. Last year I fell on hard times, and became late with my payments. I became three months in debt because I didn't have a job. However, my landlord and I came to an agreement and I was able to pay off the majority of my rent because I got a new job. It wasn't until two months ago when I started paying my rent on time again fully because I had to take out so many loans to pay my car repairs. I was doing a lot of door dashing while trying to find a job. However last month I decided to quit my job, but I had a new job lined up, I was just waiting to get hired and then paid. I was late with this month's rent, but instead of my landlord allowing me to pay late, I was sent an eviction notice. I emailed them stating that I was leaving and gave them 30 days notice last month because I'm getting paid less for this new job. Granted I didn't say I was going to be late as I was waiting on my new job status. Is this weird that I'm getting an eviction notice or common? I guess I'm in the wrong but is it weird that my landlord didn't reach out to me personally to ask about payment? Just gave me a notice of rent due then eviction. I don't fully know my rights as I live in Florida, but I feel like I'm now screwed and the landlord is being fishy.

🏠 Landlord Issue Need New Flooring in Middle of Lease (Indiana)

Indiana, USAI have lived in my apartment 4 years almost. Shortly after I moved in, the flooring started peeling up in 3 different places. These spots are a trip hazard.

After my last annual inspection, LL decides I need new flooring. Ok. I get a 24 hour notice that "most things" should be removed from my dining room, hallway, and closets. I leave work early to move everything to my living room, and hire a housesitter to be there while I am at work, but they never came to fo the floors. I called the flooring company, they said to call the landlord, the landlord says they will reschedule and call.

TWO MONTHS goes by, all my things are still cluttering up my living room, when I get another 24 hour notice that the flooring company is coming. In the last 2 months I have acquired a dining room table and a large hutch. 1) I have no where in the apartment to move them, and 2) I am disabled and cannot move them and 3) the notice said "most things should be removed"

I figure the flooring company will have to lay part of the floor, move the furniture, then lay the other part of the floor. They are a flooring company, they have to have situations like this sometimes. They show up and flat out refuse to deal with any furniture and leave.

My LL says I need to find someone to move/take the furniture somewhere else if I cant move it or have no room for it in the dining room or kitchen. They say it is my responsibility. For reference, thus is a large complex, they have at least 4 able-bodied men working maintenance full time, and I see no reason why they couldnt move the furniture. Also, the apartment across from me is empty and they could put the table and hutch in there, but there simply is no room in my apartment for them, even for "just an afternoon."

Ive considered emailing their corporate owners, but I dont want them to think Im throwing them under the bus and give them a reason to not want to renew my lease.

In the meantime, Im living in a cluttered nightmare which is seriously affecting my mental health.

What do I do?

🏠 Landlord Issue Mouse problem

US-NJ

I saw a single mouse in my studio apartment, messaged my property manager and caught it. When I put out traps I put out three around my apartment. I have since caught 4 mice (I got 2 in one trap) I have messaged my property manager twice in the last 3 days since I saw the first one, and he finally just responded to me that he is out of the country and is returning tomorrow and will handle it then.

This is unreasonable right?!? It not my problem that he’s out of the country I texted the number I'm supposed to contact for maintenance needs and have been left waiting 4-5 days to get him to send someone out to take care of this??

❓ Advice Needed (Edmonton, Alberta)

My partner and I have living in this apartment complex for nearly 6 months now, and we’ve faced issues that is literally starting to mentally hurt. I work in healthcare, long and early hours, when I finally come home to rest my upstairs neighbours with 2 children start jumping and running around. They start doing it from 4pm onwards to 9pm. Our lease states, “NOISE. The Tenant (or tenants’ guests) shall not make noise of any kind, at any time, which in the opinion of the landlord may disturb the peaceful enjoyment of other occupants, including the playing of any TV, stereo, or musical instruments.” I’ve personally went up to them, nothing. My husband, nothing. I’ve spoken to the manager and she tells me when she talked to them, they start crying and what not. I have videos of their noises and i’ve shown her and nothing is being done! Another issue is the toilet, since we move in, it clogs about once a week. When we called 24/7 customer service, they sent someone and we ended up $40. Maintenance came and said oh toilet needs to be removed but still nothing is being done! If i break the lease early, i need to pay thousands of dollars. I asked to be moved to the top floor, they said none are available. I asked them to move the noisy neighbour on the 3rd floor and us up, and they declined.

IS THERE ANYTHING WE CAN DO AT THIS POINT?
