I've recently become interested in both cardistry and tarot, and thought it'd be really cool to do both in one.
When I say cardistry, I mean things like cool looking shuffles, fun ways to display them as you work with the cards, and learning different ways to split the deck, ect ect. I wouldn't be manipulating the cards results in ways any different to normal shuffling, or attempting to perform magic tricks or anything like that.
My only real concerns come from perhaps overuse/damage of the cards, and potential disrespect to the culture/spirituality (?). I'm not sure what the correct word to use there is exactly.
I know that for cardistry, when practicing, cards tend to get bent, curved, or damaged around the edges, especially when you're still new and learning. Some people have told me that bending or overusing tarot cards can be seen as disrespectful or bad luck, while others have told me that shuffling and constant use is a great way to form a bond with your deck, and that damaged cards can just show the amount of use and love. Of course I have no intention of damaging or running the cards and wouldn't be doing it out of purposeful spite of malice, but I know that it's likely bound to happen with something like cardistry.
The other thing as well is I'm not entirely sure on the whole spiritual side yet? I hope that doesn't come off as offensive or rude, I'm still very new to this and lwk a little... Skeptical (?) still. I'm not a very religious or spiritual person, and can't help but think of it all as coincidental or just probability card draw wise. I think of it less as like reading or deciding the fates, and more as a way of physically visualising your thoughts. Certain cards have certain meanings associated with them, and you use contextual clues around the questions, the symbolism that the card shows, what jumps out at you first, the environment, and the person asking the question to build a sort of intuitive story. It's a way to realise subconscious thoughts of feelings that you've had but haven't been able to conceptualize externally or visually, and the cards, like, provide that bridge of realisation. Idk. I'm kind of saying this to preface that I don't see it as a spiritual thing (not because I think it's silly or anything, but just because I can't bring myself to unfortunately, similar with religion ect), but I know alot of people do, and I don't want to do anything that could be disrespectful to people who understand it more deeply and care in a different way.
All that being said, the cards are massive in my hands in comparison to normal playing cards, so I'm not even sure if it's a possibility. Especially since I'm still new to both cardistry and tarot.
Sorry this is so long and wordy, I just really don't want to upset anyone :(
Tldr -- is practicing shuffling tricks with tarot decks disrespectful to the cards or the people who use them?
