Anyone else have ordinal linguistic personification?
This is one of the stranger forms of synesthesia, and I know it sounds ridiculous, but I’ve always felt it very clearly. I once described it to a curious friend and she seemed almost annoyed, like I was trying to be cute or quirky. I wasn’t. It’s just how numbers and letters have always felt to me. If you haven’t heard of it, ordinal linguistic personification (OLP) means sequences like letters, numbers, or days of the week each have their own personality, and often a gender. It shows up most often in people who also have grapheme-color synesthesia.
Mine is strongest with numbers. Odd numbers generally feel male and even numbers feel female; there’s something about oddness that reads as masculine to me and evenness as feminine. Here’s the cast:
0: genderless and mysterious. Doesn’t talk.
1: a young boy, outgoing and confident.
2: a young girl, just as confident as 1 but gentler.
3: brasher, clever, a little cunning.
4: the exception. Even, but male, maybe because he’s less rounded. Quiet, sensitive, artistic.
5: a jolly middle-aged man who likes a drink.
6: a sassy, adventurous woman with an attitude.
7: well-liked and generous, but doesn’t like drawing attention to himself.
8: a wise, maternal older woman.
9: an androgynous man with trickster energy.
Multi-digit numbers are fuzzier. They feel more like combinations, with the first digit setting the general vibe and gender. Repeated digits (like 33 or 88) have twin energy. I won’t go through every letter, but here’s how the alphabet sorts by gender:
Female: A, B, J, K, P, Q, R, W
Male: C, D, E, F, G, H, I, L, M, N, O, S, T, U, V, Y
Neutral: X, Z
Does anyone else have this? What are yours like?
