Hi everyone,
I really need your help. My long-term ex-partner died by suicide three days ago, and I genuinely don't know how to process any of this. I'm completely lost, and I don't know how to live with this pain.
We were together and lived together for three years. I loved her more than anything. When we first met, she told me she struggled with depression and had previously struggled with heavy cannabis use, alcohol and other drugs. She was sober from those substances when we met, and she never used them during our relationship.
We were two women trying to build a life together in a deeply homophobic country. I struggle with depression myself, and I think we helped each other grow and learn how to live more fully, despite everything around us. She wasn't always happy, but she always told me she felt safe with me.
I tried to protect her from as much of the darkness as I could. I paid our bills, helped her with her university work, got her out of bed on the days when she couldn't face the world, helped her find jobs, and held her through it all. She loved me and supported me in every way she could, too. She was my rock, and I was hers.
Two years ago, I was accepted into an amazing PhD programme abroad. I had always dreamed of leaving our country because living somewhere so full of hatred was suffocating us. We found out about my acceptance months before I left, and she became increasingly depressed. Her depression often affected me deeply and triggered my own struggles, too.
We couldn't afford to have her move abroad with me, so we made the heartbreaking decision to break up. Even though we had decided to separate, I couldn't bear the thought of leaving her when she was so sad. I found her an apartment, moved her in with our three little angel cats, and stayed with her until my very last day in the country. I didn't even visit my friends or family before leaving because I wanted to spend every possible moment with her.
She was devastated that I was leaving, although she was also happy for me and proud of me. We continued talking after I moved abroad because we were both struggling with the separation. But staying so emotionally connected while being so far away made it difficult for me to build a life here, especially while managing my own depression. Eventually, I asked if we could reduce how often we spoke so we could both focus on our lives and try to move forward.
She continued looking after our cats, and I paid for their expenses. We usually spoke every couple of months. Even though we weren't together anymore, we still considered each other family.
She would tell me she was struggling, but never in a way that made me realise just how bad things might be. I kept reassuring her that she would graduate that year, find a better job, and that things would get better. When she told me she had accumulated debts, and one of our cats needed a major operation, I paid for the entire operation because I wanted to take some of the pressure off her. We might not have spoken often, but I never stopped caring about her or wanting her to be okay.
The last time we spoke was in August. She told me she'd found a job and a new flatmate. She also told me her depression had returned and that she was drinking too much, but she assured me she could handle it.
That day, I wrote in my diary: "Everything is going to change for her. She's going to feel amazing in no time. She deserves the world."
I never imagined those would become some of the most painful words I'd ever read back to myself.
This Sunday, I received the most devastating phone call of my life. Nothing in my darkest nightmares could have prepared me for it. My body and mind are in complete shock. I still cannot comprehend that this has happened.
She was my forever family. And I had no idea she was hurting this much. She never called me to tell me how bad things had become.
Reading her note makes me physically sick. She wrote that she felt so lonely, that she felt like a failure, and that she wanted the never-ending pain to stop. I cannot stop thinking about how much she must have been suffering.
Her best friend, who I also know, told me that she had been seeing someone new for the past couple of months. From what I've heard, that relationship may have been unhealthy. Apparently, her family had also stopped speaking to her in the months before she died.
I keep trying to piece everything together, to understand what happened and how I didn't realise how bad things had become. I keep thinking about everything I could have done differently, even though I know I can't change what happened.
I loved her. I tried to take care of her, even after we broke up, even from another country. I wanted her to have a good life so badly. I wanted her to be happy. I wanted her to have the world.
And now I'm left with all this love and nowhere to put it.
I don't know how to make sense of losing someone who was such a huge part of my life. I don't know how to stop replaying everything in my head. I don't know how to accept that someone I loved so deeply could have been in so much pain without me knowing.
If anyone has experienced something similar, especially losing someone to suicide after a long-term relationship, please tell me how you got through the first days, weeks and months. How did you cope with the shock, the guilt, the unanswered questions, and the feeling that you should somehow have been able to prevent it?
I feel so, so lost. I don't know what to do, and I really need to hear from people who understand.
