Getting my first bike

To preface I’m 5’ 11” 365lbs (down from 420 and still dropping ) I’m wanting to get a bike. I really like the street glide but I understand it’s not really a starter bike but with my weight and eventually my wife after a year or two I want something that I can keep for a while , comfortable for daily riding and 6 hour road trips occasionally. Is there something that fits my criteria decently that is more beginner friendly.

New Rider Naked or adventure bike?

Please bear with me if it sounds like im just typing my adhd is wild. I've been hard-core researching on a bike ever since i was 19,(currently 22 and obtained my endorsement this year), as a primary vehicle until I decide on buying a used or new Toyota Tacoma. Im leaning towards adv bikes since the roads down here in Louisiana, Alexandria suck horrendously but im thinking adv bikes might be to big for me since im 6'2 and 170lbs. While also thinking that naked bikes on the lower cc side are too small for me. The ones that I can name that ive been researching on are the mt07, kawasaki z650, honda cb650r, honda nx500/cb500f, and soon if my dealership gets cfmoto, the 450nk or ibex450 and the 675nk. Im currently about to start working at the dealership as a second job since I cant stand being home for more than 2 hours. Sorry if it seems like im rambling but im trying to atleast get the goal of getting the bike by January or end of December. Also I went ahead and bought most of the winter gear and somewhat summer gear since I ride around on a surron ultra bee, street legal of course. Sorry again if it seems like im rambling.

Next Bike? Upgrading from a KLR650 to V-Strom 800DE?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey folks, looking about opinions on making the jump from a 2023 KLR650s to a 2025 V-Strom 800DE adventure. Local dealer has one on sale right now to clear out new non-current inventory and I'm considering pulling the trigger on it, so my question is; am I rushing to upgrade bikes too soon or is this a logical conclusion I've come to? Also, is the 800DE the right choice or should I consider other options like a transalp or F800/900GS?

For context, I've had my KLR for a little over a year now, its my first motorcycle and it hasn't let me down but has left me wanting. During the year I commute with my bike to work, about 50km one way on highway (80km/hr speed limit), frequent 300-600km trips on my days off, and a fair bit of off pavement riding. It's treated me well but I think I'd like something maybe a little more comfortable for the long days of riding and a little more capable on the bigger highways around here (100km/hr or higher speed limit). My main gripe with the KLR is the vibration aT highway speeds, it means taking lots of breaks on those longer days and generally being pretty sore by the end of the day. I'm not a super serious offroad rider but I like riding the forest service roads around here and quite a few of the smaller double track trails.

The V-Strom 800DE seems to tick a lot of boxes for me; 2 cylinders and a sixth gear to make highway cruising more comfortable, still plenty capable offroad, heated grips is a big plus for me, aftermarket cruise control is a nice option. I'm hoping to do longer rides next season as well as some camping trips so the extra capability of a slightly bigger bike would be pretty welcome for me.

Appreciate any and all thoughts, thanks!

New Rider Broke college gearhead looking for motorcycle buying advice

Hey yall, I’m looking to buy my first bike. I live in the US where it doesn’t snow and there’s some really good places to ride nearby. I’m considering a lot of styles but I’m leaning towards the smaller sport bikes like an old ninja 400 or something similar. I also really love the cafe style and a lot of other bikes. I’m willing to take on a project bike because I have a lot of experience rebuilding smaller engines and working on boats and trucks. Because of this I’m looking at older shitter bikes on facebook marketplace. I’m looking at a 2019 Honda cbr300r with an engine knock for 500 dollars and an older 70s Kawasaki kz400 which would also be a project bike for cheap. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on this or if it’s even worth putting effort into fixing an older motorcycle like the Kawasaki. Also, if anyone has any advice for repairing motorcycles or on good older years and models to take a look at I’d love to hear.

Edit: I have most of the tools and a space to work on it. I don’t plan on riding it till the start of summer when I move into a house with my friends so I’m not worried about riding it right away. I have experience rebuilding motors, but no experience working on motorcycles

New Rider Hi! I’m interested in getting my first motorcycle

Open to getting one used, though I’m not sure what’s good mileage for a motorcycle. I want a cruiser, something like a classic 350, my budget is 5-7k. I want to get my license but I kinda need a bike first so. Yeah,

Confused - No idea what to get...

Sort of an odd ask and a bit of a loaded post but looking for some advice on what bike to get. To begin, i am a pretty 'cautious' driver/rider so I bought a can am ryker (reverse trike) about two years ago, loved it, then decided to get my regular motorcycle endorsement last year. As my ryker is automatic, i figured an automatic motorcycle would be an easy transition. I bought a used 2018 NC750x DCT late last year but only rode it a few times in a parking lot; this year i've been riding it more and even got on the highway a few times. I love the 'adventure' style bike but my turns have a lot to be desired....all my riding friends and telling me to get rid of my bike and get a manual cruiser. I am not opposed to a cruiser and at 5'8" with a 31.5 inseam, i have quite a few options; thing is, I prefer naked/adventure styles vs cruisers and if i go with a cruiser, i do not like forward controls. I also dont want to buy something and then upgrade again in less than a year - Q is - what bikes do you recommend based on what i've described above?

Next Bike? Sketchy 600 or reliable grom?

I'm looking to buy my next bike, upgrading from a cbr250r. I've seen early 2000's 600 sport bikes, newer honda groms, and SV650s all for similar prices. would it be a bad idea to get a bike like the first picture? budget is $2-3k.

I'm aware that most used older 2000s 600ccs seem pretty sketchy, does anyone have experience buying used 600s? I'm in college, and only see myself riding 1-2 times a week. I'd also say I have a decent amount of "experience" working with bikes. I would be super happy with a grom, don't get me wrong, but I wanted to see if it was plausible to get a 600.

New Rider KLE 500 SE for a beginner?

I passed my MSF course last week and ready to buy a bike. I found a great deal on a KLE 500 SE and im ready to make the purchase — except I’m over thinking every thing about it.

I’m 5’6”, 175lbs. Inseam 30.5in. — a little short for the KLE.

My riding experience is limited to four wheelers as a kid and a friend’s MT-09 for a few laps around an empty parking lot. I took the MSF course and eval on a MT-03.

I’m on the US east coast in a fairly urban area. I have no desire to go on the interstate and plan to keep to two lane highways and side streets. I’m able to transport a motorcycle easily, so I also plan on going out to more rural areas as well. I’m kind of known for going off on adventures so a bike that can go down dirt roads is something I’d really like.

I guess I just need a stranger’s validation that this bike isn’t going to be a waste of money and that I’ll settle into it.

Or should I just go with the tried and true Rebel 500 (or something similar) until I’ve got my sea legs?

India / South Asia Cruiser bikes under 4lakhs second hand

Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a bike under 4lakhs (2nd hand).

But only retro or cruisers.

I currently own Royal Enfield Classic 350.

I'll sell that and get a new one (hopefully something better).

Can you suggest me some good bikes?

Next Bike? Upgrading from rebel 500 (5'2 rider, highway + light offroad)

Hey, looking to upgrade from my rebel 500.

Its fun, but on the highway it vibrates a lot and the engine feels like its working way too hard. I would like something with better acceleration at any speed, that can also handle some light off-road / gravel roads.

Only problem is I’m 5’2 so height is a big limit for big ADVs or scramblers.

Looking for something fun, punchy at any speed, comfortable on the highway and low enough for a short rider without much modifications. Japanese bike would be a plus for reliability.

Any recommendations?

Looking for a bike that ticks all these boxes (yes, I know I'm asking for too much)😭

Under ₹2 lakh on-road

Low seat height (I'm short!)

Preferably a cruiser

45–50 km/l mileage

Good CC and highway overtaking power

Basically, I want superbike performance, commuter mileage, cruiser comfort, and a budget bike's price. 😂

Any suggestions, guys?

wtb degenerate upgrade

i've owned a 94 cbr250rr for two ish years now and love it. i'm mechanically inclined and do all my own work, i have a history of racing enduro and working on cars. however i've been on a couple group rides lately and am unfortunately giving into the degeneracy. i think i want to get into a liter bike that is injected, analog with no computer interference or aids, and well handling chassis rather than long/heavy/planted. less important but still a consideration would be a screamer, lightweight, and japanese. budget is not to largely a concern but will probably go used considering the criteria and price. just really want to know what to look for when i'm browsing marketplace on my lunch break lol. lmk if this violates rules or typical procedure, i don't use reddit often/ever thanks.

First bike purchase! Classic 350 Stealth Black vs Bullet 350 vs Honda H’ness CB350 Black — Help me choose 🏍️

Hey everyone!

I'm planning to buy my first bike, and I've narrowed it down to these three options:

- Royal Enfield Classic 350 – Stealth Black

- Royal Enfield Bullet 350

- Honda H’ness CB350 – Black

Honestly, I'm a little confused because I like the looks and road presence of all three. Since this is my first bike purchase, I want to make the right decision rather than regret it a few months down the line.

My primary use will be daily office commuting in traffic, occasional weekend rides and the occasional long ride. I want something that looks great, feels good to ride, and is reliable enough to keep for years.

I'd especially love to hear from people who own or have ridden these bikes.

A few things I'd like your opinion on:

- Which one is the most comfortable for daily commuting in traffic?

- How do they compare in terms of mileage, maintenance and reliability?

- Which has the better riding experience, especially on longer rides?

- Any issues with vibrations, service experience, spare parts or rust?

- If you were spending your own money, which one would you choose and why?

I'm not looking for a brand-war debate. I'd genuinely appreciate honest ownership experiences, pros and cons, and advice from people who've lived with these bikes.

If you could go back to your first bike purchase, would you choose the same bike again?

Thanks in advance! 🙌

Price check My Wife Is Amazing (CMX1100....)

So this weekend my wife and I were buying a new camp trailer. During a lull in the paperwork at the dealership I made a comment about trying to find the best deal on a new (to me) motorcycle; balancing age with features with price.... At that point, my wife says, "We're about to spend $XX,000 because I don't like to pee in the woods. I'm not going to nitpick your motorcycle."

I love that woman!

So... I think I've made up my mind in that I want a Honda CMX1100 (Rebel). The hard part was do I want to buy a baseline 1100 and build up the luggage or do I want to just buy the 1100T. Sadly, there don't seem to be many manual 1100Ts on the market in this neck of the woods so that decision was sort of made for me.

Looking around I noticed that there's a dealership 200ish miles from here that has two 1100s for sale. Both are 2021s. One is the manual and has 3000 miles. The other has the DCT and 2000 miles. What's odd is that the dealer is asking more for the manual. Mind you, I do not want a DCT, but the dealer doesn't know that. I'm thinking of offering the dealer $7k for the manual under the logic of "The DCT is worth more, you're only asking $8k for it, and the manual should be about $1k cheaper." At that point, I could drop a fair chunk of change into the 1100 and essentially end up with a slightly used but very low mileage 1100T for less than the cost of a new 1100T before one even starts to add dealer prep, taxes, etc. to the price.

But with the revelation that my wife is Just That Amazing there are other possibilities....

I could wait a few months and see if I can pick up a brand new 2025 1100T when the 2027s come out. It won't save much too much money but I figure the dealers will finally be motivated to move the 2025s and it will be a lot less PITA than having to build up an 1100.

Or heck, I could just pick up a 2027 1100T (assuming that Honda actually has a new model year.....if not then a 2026).

Is the logic sound? General thoughts?

Oh, and because I'm a rule follower, I'll hit the bullets in the posting guideline whether they apply to this conversation or not....

Budget: $15k fully equipped for light touring, but just because I can go that high doesn't mean I'm not looking for deals where I can get them.

Experience: 35 years of riding and looking for something with a very low CG (bad back means I need something EASY to pick up if I ever drop it in the middle of nowhere).

Type of use: Day trips, light touring, and the occasional commute (although my CB500X will get the lion's share of commuting duties)

Looking for a midweight adventure tourer in South Africa. What would you buy?

I’m in the market for a new motorcycle and could use some advice from people who’ve actually spent time riding these bikes.

My first choice would be the Yamaha Tracer 7 (700). I love the styling, performance, practicality and the fact that it’s sporty enough to have some fun while still being comfortable for longer rides. Problem is, it’s not officially available in South Africa yet, which is frustrating.

So I’ve been looking at a few alternatives:
Honda Transalp 750: Love the versatility, reliability and strong engine performance, but I’m wondering how it compares to more road-focused bikes in terms of handling and everyday riding.

Kawasaki Versys 650: Seems like a solid all-rounder. Comfortable, capable and well suited to touring, but how does it compare when it comes to performance and fun?

Yamaha Tracer 7: Still my first choice, but is it worth waiting for, especially with no clear indication of when it’ll arrive in SA?
I’m looking for something that strikes a good balance between everyday usability, comfort, reliability and performance. I’ll mostly be riding on tar, commuting around the city, with the occasional weekend trip or longer ride.
I’m not necessarily chasing top speed, but I do want something with enough power and character to make riding fun. I don’t want to outgrow the bike too quickly either.

A few questions:
If you had to choose between the Transalp 750 and Versys 650, which would you buy and why?

Are there other bikes in this category and price range that I should seriously consider?
Is the Tracer 7 really that much better, or am I overhyping it?

For South African riders, how have you found servicing costs, parts availability and long-term reliability with these bikes?

I’m open to other brands and suggestions.

Would appreciate some real-world ownership experiences rather than just spec-sheet comparisons.

Cheers!
