Discussion Pyrowave is amazing

Finally tried out pyrowave today after learning you could use it in the Apple TV steam link app. I'm completely blown away. I've done a ton of game streaming over the years with varying levels of success.

Most recently, I've been very happy using Apollo/moonlight to stream my games to the tv. Latency was great and image quality was certainly "good enough." But now, i don't even need to settle for "good enough." Pyrowave is pristine.

Streaming Witcher 3 to my tv at 4k60, CRISP image, and no latency? This was a revelation. I'm very impressed with the tech.

My goal is being happy with an office PC setup streaming to my living room has been achieved. If you have similar interests and a robust home network (pyrowave uses a good chunk of bandwidth) you owe it to yourself to try it out.

Discussion Maybe Remote Play will get some love now

So the prices have been announced for Steam Machine 2026. It’s expensive and pretty weak hardware.

Therefore, people may conclude that hey, they already have a powerful gaming PC at their desk, why don’t they just stream from that to their TV?

And if users think that, maybe Valve will also decide it’s worth revisiting, and will polish the user experience so I don’t have to turn on the host PC’s displays and launch the game on the host before connecting to it remotely if I want a smooth experience.

Maybe they’ll even release a general hardware version of Steam OS with a specially tailored lower-level streaming implementation that runs even better than something they can do purely at the level of the Steam client.

Hey, a boy can dream.

Bought a steam controller recently (loving it so far, trackpads are 10/10) and it came with a steam link, I’ve read a little bit about steam link but still don’t quite understand what it’s used for?. Any help would be appreciated.

I thought I’d give it another shot. I always liked the simplicity of steam link since it’s all built in but i never managed to get a result that satisfied me. I did not like other streaming services simply because i need another thing…. So i imagine valve has been cooking af lately because it has never worked this good!!! It’s really impressive…. Finally!!!!

Discussion Steam link has saved my night shifts

I work as a security guard for years doing night shifts, it was getting so boring, that i could not stay awake and was near to losing my job for it, I started looking for things to do, see movies, etc, until I found steamlink, i didnt even knew it existed but once i started using it i finally managed to put my sleep in line, now that i play during my night shifts im able to sleep in the day (Hours that I used to game, now I game at work) and train while being able to play games, thanks valve, thanks gabe newell, it has never given me any problems and I couldn't be more satisfied with the service.

Edit 1: I have seen a lot of people call this irresponsible, the fact that I play doesn't affect my work since I do regular checks on the place and don't use high volume, instead it's just a thing that helps me stay awake more than scrolling on TikTok endlessly, also the place I work at it's closed during nights and we only attend patients that come badly Ill or injured, I am right in front of the main door at all times, the town I live in is pretty small and I have been called 'The only guard that doesn't sleep', I also seen people say I'm lazy for having problems to stay awake when I'm being paid to, and I get it, but sadly I take care of my little brother during the days, he is six years old and its tiring too, I still do my work properly, thanks.

Discussion I found a physical Steam Link on the side of the road in a pile of garbage.

The box was just sitting there in the grass among garbage bags and cardboard boxes, maybe it was thrown out by mistake? Or out of malice? Idk, I'm not a detective.

I remembered seeing the commercial for it like... *Checks notes* a decade ago, and felt bad for it, so I took it.

Seems to have everything in the box except for manuals. Main unit, all three adapters, HDMI cable, ethernet cable, and power cable are all here.

The ethernet cable is very neatly wound, so I'm assuming it was never used.

Can it be used for anything except being a neat lil Steam themed paperweight? Do I need to worry about any data left from the previous owner? Is there a possibility it's a trojan waiting to be connected to a network?

Discussion Steam_Link Moonlight Wait for Steam Machine?

I have a decent PC in my office, Fios high speed internet and an NVidia Shield Pro in my LR. I prefer to play in the LR more often than not and need to decide the best solution. I am running a 4090 so I am wondering what my best experience would be. I know the new Steam Machine will have graphic/performance limitations compared to my main rig I just don't know if the potential latency of using Steam Link or the combination of Sunshine & Moonlight would be a better option and which of the two is superior. I am not that tech savvy so ease of use is a huge consideration. Any suggestions?

Discussion Is steamlink actually usable for you?

Hey guys, so i have a few games which i would like to play on my tv rather than on the pc. The problem is, no matter which game i am trying, i absolutly have no fun playing via steam link because of the latency, the delay is not huge but its enough to be annoying, and since my internet connection is definitely not the problem its must be steamlink itself i guess? How is it for you? Dont you have any delay between pressing your buttons on the Controller and the outcome in the game? Or is it there but you are just willing to play like this?

Discussion Allow Remote Play to stream only a selected monitor

Thumbnail steamcommunity.com
5 Upvotes

I'm the developer of HoloMapper, a projection mapping application on Steam. Users operate the software from one display while projecting to another. Steam Remote Play currently streams both displays, making remote operation difficult. A monitor selection option in Remote Play would greatly improve support for professional multi-monitor workflows.

For clarification, HoloMapper is a Unity application that uses two displays:

\- Display 1: Main editor and controls.

\- Display 2: Fullscreen projector output.

The actual problem:

Steam Remote Play initially streams Display 1 correctly. However, as soon as the projector output is activated on Display 2, Remote Play switches to capturing both displays side-by-side in a single stream.

This causes the editor to occupy only half of the Steam Link/Steam Deck screen, with the other half wasted on the projector output.

What we need is the ability to stream Display 1 only, while Display 2 continues operating normally on the host computer.

The newer "Primary Display While Streaming" setting doesn't resolve this behavior. We need an explicit option to select which display Remote Play captures, even when an application uses multiple displays simultaneously.

Discussion Fave non action games perfectly suited for streaming to a small iPhone, especially if they already have a dedicated/official touchscreen control setup

Fairly new to using the steam link but I’m pleasantly surprised how well xcom 2 plays on my iPad with the official control scheme. I have slay the official ports of spire and mini metro on my iPhone from the App Store for my fairly small iPhone so I’m wondering what other games play perfectly well when streamed to a handheld device. Preferably non action as I’m surprised how well something like sonic mania plays streaming to my small iPhone but playing action games and not being able to feel the physical buttons just doesn’t feel right to me at all

Discussion Secure input prompt

Made the mistake of opening a game. Windows Security prompt from said game… and now I can’t do anything on my computer until I get back to it.

My computer is on the other side of the world.

My question is: WHY can you not click cancel remotely? Besides through third-party remote access tools, none of which I have installed.

Discussion What do you think they are up too?

Been using the standalone steam link app for windows awhile and have noticed they have really increased pace on its changes lately

1.3.20 in January, 1.3.22 and 1.3.24 in February, 1.3.28/29/30 in May, 1.3.31 in June, 1.3.32 in July, and then 1.3.33.

and what has really grabbed my eye is the new cli and configurations that got added in may

exact streaming bitrate, exact framerate , exact resolution ,windowed mode ,persistent window position/size, automatic scaling to the client window and they launch options for

--autoconnect

--fullscreen

--windowed

--size WxH

all of this is making me really wonder if steam is heading towards some sort of cloud play launch in the near future, as it feels like alot of this would be focused towards a thin client device operating as console.

anyone got other theories

Edit 1:
https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/cloudgaming

dug a bit and found this, and the was looking at the tag line from the steam frame marketing "Steam Frame is a streaming-first, wireless VR headset" im getting excited if a frame is gonna be fully integrated into geforce now or a steam provided infra.

Discussion Steam Link Has Been Awesome in 2024

I use a desktop, but most of the time I just want to play my games in bed with a controller, it’s just easier for me after working a healthcare job all day. I tried the switch for a while and it’s okay. I tried Xbox game pass and the resolution was so low. I tried Nvidia’s service but there’s a wait time. I didn’t want to buy a steam deck also. After tweaking the settings, I can play any of my games with almost no input lag in 1080p/high bitrate, using an iPhone and backbone controller in bed.

It’s insane how well it runs, I’ve always been obsessed with handheld gaming and now I can run any game I own at high settings from my iPhone in bed.

The only issue I’ve had is the audio quality. It’ll break up at random times so my solution was to enable playback through my PC and I have a long-ass headphone cable running from my PC to my bed.

Discussion Is it worth swapping from Steam Link HW to an alternative?

Hi all,

I've had a Steam Link box for a few years, using ethernet wires to my main PC and an Xbox controller with a dongle. So far the experience is pretty good. I don't mind the graphic fidelity at its current level; however, I do feel a slight bump of input lag. It's not massive, but it's enough for me to wonder if swapping the Link for an alternative, e.g. apple TV, ndivia shield, or a mini pc, would make a difference.

I'd like for the experience to be as plug as play as possible. I can tinker and troubleshoot things just fine, I just no longer have the time or patience to deal with snags.

So the question is, has anyone moved from Steam Link box to a different bit of hardware? What would you recommend to improve input lag, and what was the most seamless transition in terms of booting up and play comparable to the Link.

Thanks all and appreciate any advice!

Discussion Steam Deck as Host PC to TV - Ethernet vs Powerline vs WiFi

I am hoping someone can help me understand what my best option is for using my Steam Deck to connect to a Steam Link (hardware or Steam Link App) on a TV on a different floor of the house.

Currently my Steam Deck is in the basement and I’d like to be able to game on the main level on the TV. The router has a 1 GB/s connection and is on the main level, with no existing way to run an Ethernet cable downstairs. Fortunately, I have an outlet directly behind the Steam Deck and could use a powerline adapter.

As far as I can tell my options are:

  1. Steam Link hardware on main floor with a powerline adapter downstairs to the Steam Deck

  2. Steam Link hardware and Steamu Deck over WiFi (5 GHz band)

  3. Steam Link app using a third party device such as Apple TV or others.

Does anyone have experience using these options? How was your performance on your TV? Thanks for helping out this tech layman!

Discussion So is there a way to make my monitor go to sleep when I start the stream?

All the posts I see about this say it’s not possible because the monitor needs to be on for the stream to work at all, but it works fine for me when I turn the monitor off. Question is, is there a way to get it to automatically go into sleep mode when I start the stream, instead of having to personally go turn it off?
