Discussion Pyrowave is amazing

Finally tried out pyrowave today after learning you could use it in the Apple TV steam link app. I'm completely blown away. I've done a ton of game streaming over the years with varying levels of success.

Most recently, I've been very happy using Apollo/moonlight to stream my games to the tv. Latency was great and image quality was certainly "good enough." But now, i don't even need to settle for "good enough." Pyrowave is pristine.

Streaming Witcher 3 to my tv at 4k60, CRISP image, and no latency? This was a revelation. I'm very impressed with the tech.

My goal is being happy with an office PC setup streaming to my living room has been achieved. If you have similar interests and a robust home network (pyrowave uses a good chunk of bandwidth) you owe it to yourself to try it out.

How do you use it on Apple TV?

These's a Steam Link app on the store (free to download). The Apple TV will let you pair, Xbox, PS5, Nintendo Pro (to the Apple TV), plus Steam Controller (to the app). A quick speed test and your good to go 😀

But it’s a beta, correct? You enable it on the client side (Apple TV in this case), I don’t see an option for that on mine?

You have to download TestFlight first and then join the steam link beta. The beta version allows you to enable pyrowave on the Apple TV side

Only thing I can currently see is, Low Latency Networking 🤔 version 1.3.32 added 59.94fps, reduced drops and Fixed overloading the client video decoder when unlimited bandwidth is enabled. Does it know the PC is running the Beta with Pyrowave turned on? Need to check 🤞

Do we have an idea of how long before pyrowave is pushed to the main channel?

No clue

Thanks, something to try, I'm using the Apple 4K with Ethernet over Gigabit LAN to PC upstairs. Didn't realise the Apple TV Steam Link supported that, I've used with the Steam Controller 😎

This is pretty neat. I didn’t realize Apple TV had pyrowave added to the app. I’m still trying to figure out why my pyrowave has studders. It’s still looks better than the standard codecs and the input is snappy, but I have a .50% frame loss that makes it look jittery.

hardwired?

Ya, both sides on a 2.5Gbps Ethernet. I’ve been having issues ever since they updated it on October 1. Was able to run it at 4k60 HDR without any hitches at 500Mbps before the update.

It's in the beta version of the app with TestFlight

Thanks! I’ll have to give it a test run. Electricity is some of the most expensive in the US here so I like these low power options

First, install test flight on your phone

Go to this link:
https://testflight.apple.com/join/Cye7Gfyy

Join the steam link beta

Then download TestFlight on your Apple TV and install that version

Within settings you can enable pyrowave. You'll also need to do this on Steam on your pc after you enable the beta client

Bei mir ist auf meinem AppleTV Pyrowave ausgegraut. Beta hab ich natürlich. Kann nicht herausfinden wieso. Apple TV A1842

Same on mine. Did you figure it out?

u/Shizophren83 13h ago

Acutllay no. Tested and installed everything again but no success. Also can’t find anything related to this issue.

Well glad I am not the only one. I was able to get it working on a Mac but that’s about it.

I am having the same issue. My Apple TV the 4k 2nd gen (2021) with A12 chip. Which version do you have?

Like you I also have been streaming the Witcher 3, but I’ve been doing it over wifi. At 1280x800p on the steam deck LCD the bandwidth needs are manageable. So for anyone on a handheld with gigabit wifi it might be a good option.

Wait so does this pyrowave replace steam link on Apple TV? Or is this like a new codec or something for steam link? First I’m hearing of it!

1

u/Crowley22g 5d ago

New codec apparently, they have improved things, but looks like it's not actually available on Apple TV just yet, confused with the OP.

Maybe the current Steam Link has improved over Gigabit LAN 🤔

It's only in the beta builds; you need to join the beta, or just wait until it hits the main release.

The link to join is in the announcement post: https://steamcommunity.com/app/353380/discussions/7/585061900942077832/

Thanks good to know 😎

It's a codec for the steam link app. But you need to be on the beta version (for now) you can get in testflgiht

has anybody gotten pyrowave to work on a linux Wayland host? option is grayed out even with se3 enabled. should I just switch to x11?

1

u/skywalkerRCP 4d ago

Yes, using Vibeshine and Moonlight VRR18, both from Nonary. Running CachyOS Wayland on desktop and CachyOS handheld on Steam Deck.

thanks

Yep, working fine on CachyOS, GNOME, SE3 client.

Can I ask how you find latency with a controller on your Apple TV for streaming? I have been trying to get it set up myself but find the latency on some faster paced games to be noticeable vs an Xbox or to my steam deck. Have seen a lot of positivity about Pyrowave in general, must check it out!

1

u/iwillletuknow 3d ago

It’s not so much of a latency issue, but rather the Apple TV adding an ungodly large deadzone to your controller sticks. Doesn’t matter if it’s steam link, moonlight or playing games directly. The issue has persisted for years and Apple is seemingly unwilling to change it.

1

u/Future-Demand 3d ago

Thank you for getting back to me, I didn't know that that was cause of the issue! Is it fixable at all, do you know?

1

u/BernieBurnsBunnies 4d ago

Given that it uses so much bandwidth? Safe to assume not to use it on data?

1

u/BigKurz8 4d ago

Yea pyrowave is made for robust in home networks. Mines using like 300Mbps bandwidth. Doesn't use up ISP data since it's all local. But from outside the home i can't imagine this would function well and would just chew through data

Pyrowave is effectively a LAN-only streaming codec, which is exactly what the creator has been intending for it.

Would be cool to see it usable for WAN streaming (which funny enough was what 5G was promising in some degree)… maybe in certain areas (there’s a donut shop south of me and a coffee shop east that each usually get gigabit cellular signals, so that could be theoretically work…. But my home ISP upload is still 22Mbps)

But for most people currently, you should really only be using Pyrowave on Ethernet. I’d imagine using it on WiFi (except in the rare case you have one device on 6GHz and that’s the one you’re using as the streaming client) would overwhelm the wireless spectrum

I just did some network work at home for this very reason. And some home lab stuff. Glad yo see you are having such good luck. What kind of controller are you using with your Apple TV?
