Discussion I feel nervous playing steamdeck at public
I felt someone is watching me

This is me and actually the worst case scenario happened to me:
Couple months back I was traveling to another city by train. It was early in the morning like 5-6ish and I decided it was time to whip out my Deck. I was playing L.A. Noir for nearly an hour with my cable earphones when the elderly gentleman next to me tapped me on my shoulder and said “Please turn down the volume its just too loud!”. There was this bug back then (I had no idea) when you connect by 3.5 mm earphone, sound continued to come from both outlets, earphone and speakers. I WAS PLAYING GAMES THROUGH THE SPEAKERS LIKE A TODDLER. With police sirens and everything. While people were trying to sleep. I was mortified, apologized and tried to explain immediately but the damage was already done.
Now I get extra nervous playing with my Deck in public.

Yeah, that's why I always take one earbud out to check whether my device is really silent after I connected the earbuds
103
u/AndrewCoja Apr 20 '26
I always do this. I take out both earbuds just to make sure there is silence and my brain isn't tricking me with one earbud.
29
u/toodice Apr 21 '26
Yep. And then again when you launch the game. And again when you start playing. And at random points during the game to check that you weren't mistaken before.
Then you realise you can hear yourself breathing more loudly with the earbuds in and wonder if everyone else can hear it and you're actually breathing really strangely so you quit and put the deck away.
That last bit might just be me.
5
u/Raider_Scum May 10 '26
Dang, I sometimes do that out of nowhere.
- oh I think im breathing really loudly
- ok im gonna space my breaths out, holding my breath a Lil to keep it quiet
- oh, now im running out of breath
- hyperventilate real loudly to catch up
Its probably just the autism tho

u/McRawffles Apr 20 '26
Happened to me once like 20 years ago on my phone and I've double checked on every device every time since. It's just a learning experience

I lived through the great public sound era of Sony Ericsson phones, with their always-broken proprietary headphone connectors, that shit wouldn't bother me anymore. "Oh you jostled the connector? Gotcha! *blaaaaaast*"
38
u/ray199569 Apr 20 '26
Holy childhood trauma. That shitty connector haunts me all these years to not even trust the 3.5mm jack.
19
u/Falcs Apr 20 '26
I had this happen once in class with Sony Ericsson Walkman being knocked slightly in my pocket. We were allowed earphones in if you were proven to get the work done and not be a disruptor, so quiet me in the corner and all of a sudden 90s/00s rock starts blasting in a mostly silent but full classroom.

→ More replies (2)57
u/AndrewCoja Apr 20 '26
People go to auto shops and then go to the waiting area and watch porn on their phone and it connects to the Bluetooth of their car while it is being worked on.
15
u/Psycho_Mania Apr 20 '26
I had that happen on a date. She got in the car and my phone connected and porn started playing. I turned off the stereo a soon as I could and said ‘I hate when songs start with sex sounds, it’s almost as bad as when songs start with a baby crying’. Don’t think she bought it…

I'm sorry but that's hilarious. You've done everything right, taken the steps to be considerate to other passengers and because of a bug you've been made to look like a carefree POS. Thinking about how others on the train must have viewed you is making me laugh, but thank god it wasn't an anime girl type game!

I take many trains/buses/planes through the year and I've seen this happen at any hour of the day, i don't know how they don't feel embarrassed.

They are just upset they can't play it. Its a playing it cool thing. If they are serious they are not cool people. They got their soul snatched by their corporate style family or something. Enjoy your life. Play magic and card games in the library. Do "nerdy" shit. Most kids who acted like this ended up in a factory or bumming off others. Just dont bother others with it and it shouldn't matter.

As you get older you learn to ignore the fucking idiots of the world. I wish I had this superpower when I was younger.
The important thing is, you do you, and ignore the attention whores who are trying to gain some sort of "social clout" by making fun of other people. Out in the real world those are the people who will fail, time after time.

I only feel comfortable in spaces like planes, airports, or intercity trains. Although I did play it in my university library when I was taking a break from my study marathons.
I could never play it somewhere like a café or something.
Of course, I'm not going to pretend this is logical in any way. It is just my nervous system telling me what us or is not safe.
116
u/ItsKingDx3 Apr 20 '26
I can’t play it anywhere outside and enjoy it, including transport. There was a comment thread about this a while back and we were speculating that, for some of us, handhelds take up too much visual space now that our brains can’t “settle” and focus on them because we can’t tell what’s happening around us, they encroach too much on our peripheral vision.
Whereas I can totally focus on my phone, vita, GBA SP in public no problem.
I think it probably affects anxious people more than most.
87
u/1nfam0us Apr 20 '26
For me I think it is that I am afraid of making myself a target for thieves having an obviously expensive item. In airports, planes, and trains there is no easy escape so people are less likely to try something.
17
u/zobbyblob Apr 20 '26
Do you feel that way about having your phone out or in your hand?
31
u/1nfam0us Apr 20 '26
Not usually, no.
I do think that is a little different simply because everyone has a phone, but you are certainly right to point out the similarity.
Like I said, it's not a logical impulse.

I completely understand this feeling. My work commute is 40mins of direct public incity train and is perfect for some Slay the spire, hades type of games but I feel very uncomfortable with it.
The only places outside of my home where I am comfortable with deck would be intercity trains, planes and airports.
25
u/jenvanilla Apr 20 '26
I 100% agree with this. I feel very exposed playing it in public. But planes, airports or long distance trains is only time I feel less exposed and more “normal” for playing it.
Odd, considering I’d easily read or watch tv with head phones on bus or short train distances (less than 20 mins) and wouldn’t think twice about it. But then I guess it feels more private reading.
It’s even funnier when I think about the fact whenever I see people playing games in public I just think it’s cool lol
3
u/Wboys Apr 21 '26
I go out of my way to take it out in public (cafees, Kava Bars, trains etc) because people have only ever found it cool and it's a great way to meet other people because people with the same interests as you will just approach you to ask about what game your playing or compare steam decks etc.
9
u/Burgundy_Man Apr 20 '26
I only play mine outside of the house when travelling because I feel like in any other situation, I could be doing something better with my time. I love the portability of the device but what's the point in going outside just to detach myself from my surroundings and do something I could do at home?
6
u/glytxh Apr 20 '26
Outside of travelling long distance, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Steamdeck in the wild.
I know mine rarely leaves home. It’s not portable in the same way the PSP or DS were. It’s more of a laptop in a really weird form.

I'm a lawyer and my train commute to court is easily an hour each way. I'm tempted to bring my steam deck for the commute, but I would then have to pass it through the security scan and security would know that I'm the lawyer who plays video games at work. They probably don't care, but it matters to me. Working during the commute is probably more productive anyway

If you're at a party and doing this, you're in the wrong. If you're sitting somewhere public with sounds full blast, you're also in the wrong and definitely being stared at.
If you're sitting somewhere public with headphones in and not furiously clacking or playing a game that activates the fans extra loud, you're fine dude.
Most people assume I'm playing on a Nintendo Switch and either ignore me cause it's "Just a switch". Or become intrigued and ask "Is that a switch?". A few times I get the "Dam that's a monster in your hands!". I've been running into more people who know what it is nowadays though. PC Handhelds are definitely getting more popular.
Not to sound rude, but you're not special because you're playing on a Steam Deck. That's a good thing.

Jacob Elordi spent long hours in makeup for Frankenstein and used to play a lot on his Steam Deck. You can even see some behind-the-scenes moments on Netflix.
Henry Cavill is over level 80 in World of Warcraft and he said that he doesn't mind showing his warhammer collection to known people who don't really understand this world.
Whoopi Goldberg was frustrated because Diablo IV wasn’t available on Mac. Brendan Fraser loves the Nintendo Switch.
Do you really think that, even if they are famous, there isn’t a percentage of people who look down on them? In a patetic and childish way? At the same time the majority love them regardless.
Don’t care about what those people say. Remember there will always be people who like you and people who don’t. You just should be focused on yourself first, and secondary on a group of people who are aligned with your same interests.

TL:DR; I got carried away typing about my experience with playing the Steam Deck in public. Steam Deck in public is awkward and attracts people. It's like wearing a big TALK TO ME sign.
I go to a clinic for appointments regularly and sometimes I'll be in the waiting room for 45 minutes. I used to fill that time on my phone doomscrolling, but now I bring my deck and play Valhiem or BALL X PIT. The thing that irritates me the most is that more often than not, someone will see it and want to talk about it. I'm not really a social person and I brought a Steam Deck to play it, not to talk to people about it. I stopped bringing it because 80% of the time I would take it out and play it at the clinic, I would end up spending the 45-60 minutes talking to some random stranger about what a Steam Deck is, what a "Steam" is and the game I'm TRYING to play.
Some people do make me uncomfortable because sometimes it seems like they are feigning interest to get close enough to me to snatch it and run. One guy was VISUALLY on amphetamines and was giving me weird vibes the whole time he was talking to me about my Steam Deck.
Some people don't even say anything and just watch me play a game over my shoulder. It's so painfully awkward that I won't say anything and just put the Deck to sleep and put it up.
One time I decided to just wear my over ear noise canceling headphones to advertise that I don't want to talk. I saw someone standing in my peripheral, and I thought it was someone wanting to talk about the Steam Deck so I ignored them and kept playing. They tapped me on the shoulder and I said "It's a Steam Deck, and I don't want to talk about it." in and irritated tone. Turns out they were calling my name for my appointment for 15 minutes and I couldn't hear them. It was a nurse. I felt my face go red, which is why I don't wear headphones there anymore.
I just wish that people treated me like I treated people that I saw in public with a Steam Deck before I got one. Yeah, I wanted to go up and ask them questions and stuff because I hadn't seen one IRL, but I would rather not bother people trying to enjoy a game, especially a complete stranger.

too big, too expensive, too fragile for whipping out in public. too many steps when taking out, cant be trusted to sleep in bag because its powerful enough to cook itself. if only it was a clamshell design

I can't get over the fact it doesn't turn off when it gets too hot

If I play on the metro it’s with my AirPods on so I don’t really hear anything, anyway the only time I heard someone make a comment he was just telling his gf “look that’s a steam deck wtf it’s cool” lol

I feel nervous playing in the tram, because someone could steal it. Which is really weird because I'm certain my six year old phone is more expensive and I don't feel the same way with it.

Stop giving a f what people think about you as a whole, do they pay your bills? Do they feed you or your kids. Exactly, do you.
Im the guy at playing games off the steam deck, with a controller, a 1080p 15.6 inch portable screen in public enjoying the f out of my life at 40.

I use mine everywhere. Planes, trains, car rides, Dr Appointments, work. You name it, I take it. It's going with me to an event in a week for those downtime moments out of the desert heat. That sucker is just the best device to take on the go.

I’m a 38 year old man and no longer give a damn. No one else does so why should I
Edit: so many comments are saying the steam deck is too fragile. Guess i didnt get the memo. I bought the Jsaux case in 2023 and have never had an issue. Flown over 500 flights, all over the US, played just about daily, literally just tossing into a soft backpack.

If you're afraid to play in public because you're worried it might attract the attention of thieves, then that's understandable. If you're afraid to play it in public because you think people are judging you, that's weak lol.
I can guarantee you that most people don't care! And if you do get attention, it will be most likely from people who are curious about the device more than anything. It's still a pretty niche device in the grand scheme of things. That's been my experience.

I've taken it with me on days out in London, drunk people have been very amused with it on the train ride home, never had anyone be weird or rude about it personally

I mean, if you're gonna take it to a party maybe its a better idea to just stay home

I usually leave it for when I'm on a plane. My biggest uses outside the house is when I'm in a hotel or something away from my PC.
