Discussion i think we need to stop pretending the premium you have to pay for this controller isn't absurd.

I worry about some of these repliers and their ability to detect humor in your post.

u/JohnnyBeeGaming 1d ago
The real version would probably be the $20 wired gamesir option with a dual shock layout.
It obviously ignores wireless, gyro, and trackpads but for people who don't need those features they could save some money. I actually use the cheap gamesir thing for more retro titles where it fits like the spyro and crash bandicoot re-releases.

Yeah this wasn't even subtle it was like dad humor. I know people do the concern trolling stuff but genuinely, if this went over your head or if it offended you, you need help. Either you are so ill equipped to handle social interactions that being on the internet is irresponsible, or you're so emotionally attached to a controller that your family should hold an intervention.

u/pigpentcg 1d ago
IMO itās worth it. I preordered it immediately and have used it and nothing else since it arrived. Itās perfect for me.
That being said, it might not be perfect for everyone, and those people should continue their search for their perfect controller. But I have wished for the SteamDecks controls in a standalone controller since the SteamDeck launched. Iām happy

Basic Xbox controller - $49
Xbox Elite Controller - $135
Dualsense - $79
Dualsense Edge - $200
Gamesir G7 Pro 8K - $89
Flydigi Vader 5 Pro - $79
Nintendo Pro Controller - $79
It's really not that expensive, when you consider other controllers, and the features they have compared to the steam controller. Yeah, it would be nice if it was 80 bucks instead, but they have no reason to.
EDIT: Does an xbox controller have gyro? Does valve have the same economy of scale that Microsoft or Sony does? Every single controller on this list has LESS features than a steam controller.
24
u/skeeferd 1d ago
Outside of the Steam controller I highly recommend the 8 Bitdo ones, they're great controllers and better than the ones made by the big companies. The price on them is pretty solid too.
10
u/Ecks30 Steam Controller (2026) 1d ago
As someone who has owned 8bitdo controllers for years i would have to say the Steam controller is far better just because when it comes down to button mapping for the back of the controller you could set it up for any button even for keyboard commands while in a game while the 8bitdo controllers you would have to use their app to map the back/top buttons for another button on the controller like having the back buttons for L3 and R3.
While their older controller are $60 their newer ones like the Ultimate 3 are the same price as the Steam controller and the Ultimate 3E is $150 so more or less people would rather go for a Steam controller and the only reason why i went for their controller is because of the SNES D Pad on them which i liked more for fighting games.
7
u/DarkOx55 1d ago
The Ultimate 2 wireless & a couple of others have full steam input support so you can map whatever button you like to them. Ultimate 2ās just missing trackpads & capacitive thumb sticks vs the SC.
2
u/Yentz4 1d ago
Has anyone ever even found a real use case for the capacitive thumbsticks?
→ More replies (4)4
u/DarkOx55 1d ago
If you only use gyro to aim you need to shut off the gyro periodically to reset your hands (called āratchettingā). Capacitive touch is great for that, though I do it with a trackpad & personally donāt need it on the sticks.
3
u/Yentz4 1d ago
My 8bitdo Pro 3 can use steam input just fine. I have all the extra buttons mapped using steam input, no extra software required.

The two Ultimate 3 versions available are Xbox compatible and have to pay for the licensing. They will most likely release more generic versions at a much lower price point.

u/SocialJusticeAndroid 1d ago
Of course Valve is not going to get the same economies of scale as Sony and Microsoft so in that context it feels appropriately priced.
The only reason I wish they accepted a lower price is for deeper penetration to entice more devs to explicitly support it and use all the features including custom development of HD haptic profiles.
The Steam Controller has excellent haptics and if they coded it directly I believe we could have a haptics experience at least on par with the Dualsense (sans adaptive trigger effects). As it stands we mostly get translated Xbox rumble (which sometimes doesnāt work in the stable branch of SteamOS but is better in the beta branch). It could be oh so much better.
Valve needs to have some kind of developer relations department getting devs to properly support stuff like this.
Alternatively I wonder if Valve could at least translate Sonyās Dualsense haptics to the Steam Controller. That should be vastly superior to translating Xboxās coarse rumble. But I suspect there might be licensing issues else why havenāt they done that yet?

100 is fine for what that controller does. steam controller is designed in a way that the sticks will never get drift.
people pay 200 for a shitty dual sense edge with is prone to get stick drift.
dual sense edge controller has like 4 hours of battery, what a joke.
it not just cost less than ANY other pro controller, it does everything better at the same time.

How many controllers besides the steam controller have:
- Gyro
- Palm touch sensors
- Touch sensitive control sticks
- Four back buttons
- Two touchpads
- TMR sticks
- Charging dongle
- Insane battery life
Is it expensive at its own? Yes. Is it expensive compared to other controllers? No.
2
u/Ishaname 16h ago
Fr the Xbox "Elite" has two back paddles(which iirc are only rebindable and not additional binds) and a better plus pad, and maybe slightly better reactivity yet is the same price range.
2
u/Independent_Mud2794 16h ago
Sadly the Xbox elite is hot garbage. I have an elite series 2 and you simply canāt press in the sticks when at a diagonal. Itās not my particular controller, itās a common problem.
4
u/Calrissien 18h ago
I donāt mind the price, I just wish it worked outside of Steam. Having to go back to my noisy Gamesir controller when I want to play Gamepass titles is annoying. I found one workaround, but then the haptics donāt work.

I love it. I use it on both my gaming PC as well as my Apple TV for Steam Link. Being able to program the buttons has made my life so much easier. For example, in Control Resonant, I programmed a back button to do the charge hold attack automatically, so I can just tap it and get a perfectly timed hold and release. Similarly, I can do most of the hold the left shoulder button actions with just a Tap.

u/serial_crusher 1d ago
Youāre right. Those suckers at fisher price could be making so much more money if they aligned their pricing with market demand.
I bet their controllers ship way faster than SCs too.
3
u/FullMotionVideo Steam Controller (Linux) 1d ago
Back buttons have been expensive on controllers forever. The rumor always was that SCUF Controllers (now a division of Corsair) owned a patent and held a big fee for it. It's likely true since otherwise 8bitdo would have done it already.

That left one is a solid controller. Made it through my child beating on that shit and biting it. Still kicking.
The Steam controller price isnāt that much considering others. Iām a long time PS fan, so the Dual Sense is my go to, and those range from 60-80 bucks (not including the edge.) The Steam controller now gets used as much as my Dual Senses.
Just based on my experience, I donāt know how people go through controllers regularly. Iāve had one of my DSās since launch, another one that use most between PC and PS for 4 years, another for 3. Before that, the controller for my PS4 had close to a decade on it lol.
I guess with that I mean that I treat my electronics well and they last perfectlyā¦so that makes controller prices just fine with me.
3
u/AnimeNoodle 1d ago
For 100 bucks for a battery that lasts me almost two weeks without recharging it is a win for me in my book.

u/Frosty_Engineer_3617 23h ago edited 23h ago
For trackpads, I pay $100 for it. I love using my Steam Controller, it's by far the most comfortable controller I have used by far out of all my controllers. I have Gamersir G7 Pro, 8BitDo Ultimate 3-Mode controller, Dualshock 4 Controller, Fantech Nova 2(Dual Sense 5), 8BitDo SN30 Pro 2, 8BitDo SN30 Pro, NSO GC, Nyxi Warrior Lite, Guilikit Elves Pro 2, RetroFighter Mantis, GameSire T3 Lite, Xbox Elite, Xbox Controller(2015), Xbox Controller(2020), Retro-Bit Tribute64, and 8BitDo 64.
None of the controllers in my collection right now even comes close to the comfort and use case of the Steam Controller. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying the Steam Controller is perfect because it's not but it's the closest controller I own that's getting closer and closer to perfection ESPECIALLY with the grip style.
I am still seeking for a controller with the VR Controller grip style where it's you hold the controller and use both the Triggers and Bumpers in the GUN GRIP STYLE just like with VR Controllers where you don't need to press down buttons from the top of the controller like with all gaming controllers that follow the traditional bumper and trigger layout.

Depends on how much you value what it has
You can easily find controllers much more expensive with features like Xbox compatibility out of the box
The trackpads are the main unique thing about the Steam controller and are a good thing for bridging the gap to games that donāt support controllers
The puck is also pretty good for itās purpose
I couldnāt wait till 2027 for a controller so I decided to get a Gamesir G7 Pro and itās fitting my wants just fine so far
If theyāre ACTUALLY AVAILABLE, maybe a better consensus can be made tbh
2
u/LuisMiranda4D 1d ago
The steam controller is still $100 right? Yeah that's not that much more expensive. I'm one of those weirdos who bought both the Xbox Elite and Playstation Edge controllers and those mfers were what I'd call expensive.
My only complaint with the steam controller is that it only works with steam. I have game pass on pc and you need to jump through a bunch of hoops to use it on there, whereas my two console controllers work instantly.

Steam input. Build quality. Trackpads.
I personally use 8bitdo controllers now because i have had WAY too many xbox controllers get stick drift on me. Havent had to buy a new controller in over 2 years now. Ill be getting a steam controller when i need a new one though. It will go great with my docked steam deck.

I bought a steam controller solely for those trackpads. I used to have a darkwalker shotpad v2 ($40), but it has been discontinued, so the steam controller is my only choice now. I just dont like using a gyro or a joystick to control the camera in 3d games

u/b3dGameArt 13h ago
That shotpad is actually pretty sick :o

so far best controller Ive ever owned but it is pricey. but then here in CAD every controller is. I think we've reached peak controller. You can pickup a great TMR controller that works with bluetooth, a 2.4ghz dongle and a switch for $30 USD all while the first party controller manufacturers refuse to make a single practical upgrade on a $100 controller. The Steam controller just proves how absurd the console manufacturers are and exactly how they feel about the customers. You can't sell more controllers by making them last longer.

Hear me out, the direct comparison is the ps5 pro controller. Have tried out quite the range before: ps4, ps5, Xbox, switch controllers etc
Iāll give it to you unbiased, does the triggers have more to be desired? Kinda ps5 controller has the better one imo but for no stick drift from the tmr sticks repairability in mind and the trackpad? Iāve used it more out of games than any other controller Iāve ever even owned.
The trackpad can be used as a keyboard
The haptics are amazing
Weight is lighter than the ps5 controller
If this doesnāt fit you go get a different controller but just a heads up this oneās way more repairable.

u/Wan-Pang-Dang 20h ago

u/reden_fx 16h ago
The Steam Controller is actually quite cheap considering all the features and design choices it has. The sheer value of it compared to the competition is quite incredible.
1
1
u/Rasann 16h ago
Considering that many controllers available are $100+ and some are edging toward $200?
Yeah there are controllers under $100 and under $50 and $30, the Steam Controller being at $100 is by definition, and by the data we have, mid-range.
Whatās absurd is paying $200 or close to $200 for a controller.
Also, and this is a valid point of consideration - if you donāt have use for what the controller has, including the trackpads, donāt buy it. Others will, you may not.
If it doesnāt fit in your hands, donāt buy it.
If you donāt like the material itās made from, donāt buy it.
If you think itās ugly and fat - you guessed it - donāt buy it.
There are plenty of controllers out there thatāll fit you and your needs.

We have both of these and can confirm that both are premium products and worth every penny.

I know this is a shit post but im genuinely curious. Does anybody really use the trackpads? What do you use them for?

Honestly if I don't have to deal with stick drift and have to get a new controller every month or so it's worth it.

$11 is fucking ABSURD for that. Where are they getting their chips for that? The moon? The rising cost for controllers are ridiculous!
Edit: OH MY GOD I DIDNT SEE $99 FOR A CONTROLLER

Trackpads and back buttons are literally game changers for me. I stream my PC to my TV constantly and being able to navigate with the trackpads is extremely useful. The battery life is fantastic, the puck makes going between different devices super easy, and because there's so many button options, steam input allows me to program all sorts of inputs. I RARELY play a game not on steam, and last time I did, I just added the games launcher as a non steam game and everything worked flawlessly.

Hard to justify a steam controller over my 8bitdo pro 2, other than the track pads and the small selection of games I personally play that utilize it

It's a dope controller with a lot of cool features that I unfortunatelywould probably never utilize. I already have a few controllers a swap between anyway.

I have both controllers and if you can live without the steam features they both feel good in the hands very ergonomic!! take that as you will š¤·š¾āāļø

Possible that someone's already said this, but if you input the Contra code on the toy controller it makes a special sound. I can't remember exactly what it is, but if I'm remembering correctly its some Mario-adjacent coin or power up sound.

Iāve enjoyed it for more than $100 worth, Iād say. Itās made plenty of games that I never thought would be viable on controller or that I thought would only be good on steam deck controls very playable. If you just want it for controller stuff, donāt bother, but if you love to tinker and make configs for games that donāt have native controller support, you canāt do much better.

Thank you all for top post this month!! you love to see it. i had to take a 6 minute long break from sonic colors to make and post this, a game i have been in my room playing for around 3 years straight with no leaving leading up to this point, and it's thanks to the offhand thought of making this reddit post that i was convinced to finally turn the game off and open the door, my mom is missing and my dad looks tired, but thank you all never the less!Ā
