Discussion i think we need to stop pretending the premium you have to pay for this controller isn't absurd.

Whats the benefit of the controller? I've used my Xbox controller for so long, and its never failed me. I dont really have a reason to replace it

Steam input. Build quality. Trackpads.

I personally use 8bitdo controllers now because i have had WAY too many xbox controllers get stick drift on me. Havent had to buy a new controller in over 2 years now. Ill be getting a steam controller when i need a new one though. It will go great with my docked steam deck.

Steam input isn't exclusive to the Steam Controller though?

it isnt!

It’s not, but a lot of controllers with back buttons don’t expose them as actual extra buttons so they can’t be separately mapped.

No it's not.

Yeah sorry i meant that the latency is better with the steam controller when you connect to the deck / machine with the controller’s puck. having all valve hardware makes the user experience more streamlined.

Oh right the puck, yes in that case definitely both exclusive and a strong point from what I've heard indeed

Which 8bitdo controller do you own? I have one of their kb/m bundles with the detachable numpad and theyre great. One of my Xbox one controllers has that drifting issue, but my original wired Xbox controller has been the most durable controller ive ever owned. I even bought one off ebay for my son.

You mention build quality, but thats the main reason I avoid new brands. And I cant do the track pads, personally. Ill most likely pick one up though.. I've nothing against the controllers or anything. Are they on back order like the rest of steam hw?

I have had the “ultimate 2c” for 2 years now and its still going strong.

Thanks!

Go for Ultimate 2, it comes with the charging dock which is very handy

The big up i guess is the trackpads, on the steamdeck its very nice to have them. After that it would be stickdrift, but usure about that too soon

I bought a steam controller solely for those trackpads. I used to have a darkwalker shotpad v2 ($40), but it has been discontinued, so the steam controller is my only choice now. I just dont like using a gyro or a joystick to control the camera in 3d games

That shotpad is actually pretty sick :o

It was amazing. It has a ton of buttons and registers as a keyboard and mouse instead of a controller, so dual input support is not needed. Compatible with any pc game

This has piqued my interest.. theres no new versions, or alternatives? Id actually be interested in picking one up

IFYOO GTP01 or IINE Mouse-Pad Controller. They are still available on Amazon, I think. The v2 version has gyro and wireless mode. Unfortunately, shipping costs on Amazon to my country are more expensive than the Steam Controller

Gyro is my favorite part

It's great for games which have no/limited support for pre-existing controllers. Hell, with remapping it made the experience of playing certain titles EVEN BETTER. Highly recommend looking at the remapped controls for something like Into The Breach.

Trackpads offer better range of motion and accuracy for stick movement and gyro aiming and gyro aiming features. It's superior in that regard and that's proven. However, if you still prefer stick aiming over properly implemented gyro aiming and tracking or you prefer stick movement to fuller range of motion of trackpads, you probably don't know the advantage or need the potential advantage of this controller. Your satisfied with your experience.

Also if its not a steam game, get fucked. SISR sucks ass, and causes problems in older games.

Steamless Controller works fine give it a try. I've even used it to play when when stream input to my xbox when im on windows instead of Linux.

They just updated its functionality without needed steam. Also you can do old kb/m games much easier thanks to the pads and back buttons if you launch through steam and use steam input to map

Personally I think the ergonomy is on a whole different level. But then again I never liked xbox controllers and the asymetric sticks.

u/b3dGameArt 17h ago

Lol, I read your comment and then glanced at my controller next to me.. how tf have I never noticed the asymmetry. I do have ps controllers I use, plus the original steam controller.. even a few randoms, like the discpntinued Luna. They all work fine, but the Xbox just seems to work on everything for me. I am not a fan of wireless controllers though.

If it works it works! Hope the asymmetry isn't going to bug you from now on haha sorry for that, I legit was getting cramps from time to time from ony of my thumbs being uncomfortable. But I'm definitely an outlier, I know plenty people who love xbox controllers and consider them the best.

I think it's ridiculous that they still use AA batteries though.

Thats where I draw the line, actually. My controller is an original wired controller. And Ive converted my Xbox one controllers to rechargeable, but I still keep them wired in. I agree that its weird to ship like that though.
