So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).
A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.
As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.
With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...
So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

So I work in a family practice clinic. And we do a pumpkin decorating contest. And when I tell you this people take this contest pretty seriously. I didn't realize how seriously they took it. They said "hey you should remember to bring a pumpkin for the decorating contest!". And I thought oh i'll just carve out something, so I did. But that next morning I left and forgot the pumpkin at home. And when I got there. Holy crap I was glad I forgot that pumpkin! Bc these fools go hard! And I said that day that next year......I was taking it seriously. I thought about this on my own but I googled it and found a few others that had done it. But I felt like I could do it a little better. I do wish the pumpkin had been slightly bigger. The wings are to scale but I'm sure the cockpit is a little bit small. But all in all I don't think it came out bad. I don't think i'm gonna win bc there are a few spots that didn't come out right and i'm out of time to really fix it. I had a pretty bad setback yesterday and basically had to start over today. But I'm pleased with it, glad I did it. Thought I'd share.
If anyone wants to see what some of their pumpkins looked like last year. I'll put some pics in the comments

Poor, poor Parasaurolophus-head Coleman Trebor. Gone too soon from Star Wars.
But for real, it seems like they should have had a better contingency plan for capturing Dooku if Mace couldn't do it than sending in someone with the situational awareness of a rock.

Donāt get me wrong. I love this fight. I love the drama, the action, the music.
I just have always wondered why Vader was fighting so badly after Luke gave into his anger on the second Death Star.
During their fight on Cloud City, Vader effortlessly dominated the fight. On the Death Star, the two were more on equal footing (for the most part), but Vader still gave him a fight. However, once Luke gives into his anger and attacks out of rage, Vader rather instantly gets forced onto the defense and doesnāt try to take back control. He just keeps backing up and rather weakly swings his saber at Luke.
I know Vader had to lose, but is there an in-universe, explanation for why his swordsmanship suddenly turned so poor?

I just rewatched the battle and, after all these years, am still surprised at how stupid the Emperorās ābest troopsā acted while fighting on Endor.
So, they start out on top, with the rebels all being held hostage at gunpoint. They have the advantage.
Then the Ewoks appear and ambush them and all hell breaks loose. The rebels are kicking and flipping stormtroopers to the ground, everyoneās running in all directions, and nobodyās in command. Worse, the stormtroopers, rather than try and secure their hostages, instead decide to blindly chase the Ewoks back into the forest.
Why this stupid tactic? Youāre rushing into territory you donāt know, against an enemy you canāt even see.
I know the Empire has to lose, but why make them act like idiots?

When I first saw it in the theater, I thought they were just another alien species to move the plot along, but they're really kinda funny, and they're Grogu-sized so he can have some friends and go on a rescue mission.
We also learn the Star Wars universe curse word, Dank Farrik.

Just beat the first three races in the first tournament, only complaint is itās a bit too easy! This is a very technologically impressive game for 1999. Iām playing the Nintendo Switch Aspyr port that came with the Heritage pack, though back at my parentās house Iām pretty sure my dad has an original Nintendo 64 copy (and a working N64 to play it on)!

For me, any of the Andor monologues, Obi-Wan's scenes on Kamino discovering the clone army, and Leia and Han's interactions at Echo Base in ESB.

Reading through some back issue comics I grabbed recently and this back page ad struck me. Did we know Special Editions were coming back then? "The original one last time" gets kinda foreboding when you think about it too long.

I donāt even think he would make it to 70 ngl. That suit was barely keeping him alive. And honestly I think he just lost years off his life with those injuries. Iād give him 20 years at the very best. Itās honestly impressive he made it to 45. I donāt think most people would have.

I didn't really care about Aldersaan getting destroyed in ANH and all the billions killed nor the Hosnian System ( I think that's close enough) in TFA.
Han was a little saddening maybe and I think Ben was a shock to young me 40 odd years ago.
However I think it's the Ewok and his mate trying to get him to move in ROTJ that is saddest.
Thoughts ?

I made her using the Forces of destiny Ahsoka Tanoās head and G3 Draculauraās body.
She definitely started off looking super cursed but Iām super happy with how she turned out in the end <3
