Hey everyone! I’m a film student looking to expand my portfolio and start creating content for my small production company.

I love stand-up comedy and watch a lot of Kill Tony, which gave me an idea: why not create a Vancouver-based show inspired by that format?

I love Vancouver and want to create content that showcases the city and its amazing talent. There are so many aspiring comedians out there who deserve a platform to perform, develop their skills, and share their comedy with a wider audience.

My goal is to film a live stand-up show featuring amateur and up-and-coming comedians, giving them a chance to get on stage while I build something creative for Vancouver’s comedy scene.

Would any local stand-up comedians be interested in being part of something like this? I’d love to connect with people who are interested, hear your thoughts, and see if we can make something happen!

Feel free to comment or send me a message.

So I started Open Mic-ing early summer, got a few laughs, started to put my stage time online and ended up getting a booking. Great. I took a few weeks off to generate a bit more material, but had an awful feeling of FOMO. Not so much the stage time, but who could be there, who could see my video online, feeling that any missed Open Mic was a missed opportunity.

I have strong feeling that it won't go away until I get back out there, which I am sure is the answer anyway, but has anyone felt that?

I've had this guy in my head for decades but I can't place him to a name. I believe he was relatively tall and skinny, had slicked back hair, a kind of old fashioned suit, and a cigar. I think he said he was from Canada. Kind of a fast-talking retro throwback style.

He would have almost certainly been on Comedy Central between 1994 and 2004. Probably not a full special, maybe just a slot on Premium Blend or one of those types of shows.

He had one bit about goatees, where he said something to the effect of "Why would you wear something like that on your puss?" (the use of the word puss to mean face in that way definitely struck me as odd) and "Is the root word of that not 'goat'"?

If anyone knows who I'm talking about, it would ease my mind a bit. Thanks!

edit: Thanks for everyone's suggestions so far. To be clear, I think his visual presentation and delivery was vaguely like a 30's gangster meets Michael Douglas in Wall Street. Bob Zany, John Wing Jr, Adam Growe, Mike MacDonald, and Stewart Francis don't seem to fit the bill

2nd edit: thank you UnfunnyJosh - his name was Eric Tunney! Very sad to hear he died young.

hey you all, i’m honestly looking to get into standup. i’m a student and usually do improve but i wanna get started on working on materials for stand up. what was it like for anyone when you just started out?

Hey, so I’m a nearly year in comic but have been wondering why Everytime I perform a fresh joke it always lands but over time, each time I said it, the crowd responds to it less and less. Any suggestions?

Hello funny peoples. Coming up tomorrow Pittsburgh tomorrow and was wondering if there are any Friday night open mics/shows that need a comic? Never even been to the city, so it would be awesome to perform there, even just at an open mic.

Please drop me any information if you have any! Thank you!

The guy just isn’t, and never has been, funny.

Went to Sammy Obeid’s show for the first time, and what a disappointment! He repeated EVERY joke 3–4 times just to film viral Instagram reels, dragging out the show and making the whole experience feel performative. You really can’t believe everything you see on social media. The entire show felt more focused on creating viral clips than actual comedy. It was a hard watch, and the audience seemed confused. It’s incredibly disrespectful to a paying audience. I’ve never experienced anything like it. Is he a stand up comedian or just a guy making viral videos? Curious if anyone else has had a similar experience at his shows.

I feel that Chris rock had one singular prime in the 90s and early 2000s but Louis had at least two primes from lates 00s and also early 2000s.

Got material that I want to try suggest some comedy clubs in the in Dallas and surrounding areas someone already suggested a club named Sharks

I didn't know this was happening, but I started seeing a comedian talk about how her bits were stolen.

I don't use insta or tiktok just YouTube.

I genuinely don't understand the praise Bo Burnham gets, especially for Inside. I don't think I've ever watched something so painfully self-indulgent and narcissistic masquerading as comedy.

The entire thing is just a grown man sitting in a room singing about how depressed he is, how terrible the internet is and how difficult it is being alive. Am I supposed to find this profound? Or funny? None of these observations are particularly clever or original, yet people talk about this special like he's somehow captured the human condition in a way nobody else has.

What makes it worse is how calculated it all feels. Every breakdown, every awkward moment, every instance of him acknowledging how self-absorbed he's being. Apparently pointing out that you're being pretentious means you're no longer being pretentious.

And the whole COVID aspect is ridiculous. People were losing their jobs, businesses and family members, but thank God we had Bo Burnham documenting the unbearable psychological torment of being a millionaire stuck in his house with a camera and a piano. The fact that people treated this as some groundbreaking representation of the pandemic is genuinely baffling.

I don't have an issue with comedy exploring serious subjects, but Burnham seems far more interested in being perceived as intelligent, tortured and insightful than actually being funny. I swear half the appeal is that his audience gets to feel clever for understanding observations a reasonably perceptive fourteen-year-old could make.

Inside felt like being held hostage by a theatre kid who'd just discovered depression and wanted everyone to know about it.

any open mics for complete beginner near Fairfax ?

he just be groping women, everyone in the scene knows this and it ALWAYS gets ignored. When is it enough?? He gets away with it everytime…

I'm a comic with about 20 minutes of solid material I rotate through. I feel like it's taken me quite a while to get there, and I'd like to make a better effort to keep writing more. I also feel like I'm bad at doing that alone because I can get distracted or lazy.

I've floated the idea of writing sessions to some of the other open micers I know so we can all build on our material and show up more often to open mics with new stuff to try out. I'd like to get something together on Sundays before our usual mic.

I also want it to be more constructive than just a group hang. For those of you who have done writing sessions regularly and successfully, what advice would you give?

I keep writing new jokes rather than finish ones I already started! And when I first write something it makes me laugh. It may make me laugh a few times after that as well when I read it. But then eventually it loses its funny and I question if it was ever funny to begin with. Anyone else deal with this? What’s y’all’s process for joke writing? How do you finish jokes if you didn’t naturally come up with the entire joke when it first hit you?

Here’s my process so far:

• Write shit down in a note on my phone or a notebook as it pops in my head throughout the day. I’ll also record voice memos and videos if it feels like writing will break the flow

• Read/listen through the lists every now and then and expand on jokes or connect them to other jokes

• Add these jokes from disparate places to a doc on my computer where I try to organize them, edit them, etc. I’ve got them split into categories, topics, how close to done they are, etc.

• Keep going through these and editing them and punching them up until they feel “ready” to try on stage… This is where the bottleneck is. I haven’t felt like any longer format jokes are truly done I don’t think.

I really like some of what I have. I think it’s more than solid enough to start going to open mics and practicing. I’ve got tons and tons of one-liners and quips, which are cool, but I wanna finish these story and observational jokes!

We have a local comic who claimed they were on one of the regional shows back in September. But a few of us question whether they’re telling the truth or not. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to fact check this. Does anyone know if I can find a list of who made it to the regional shows?

If you want to be nice and give me feedback or rate it out of 10 or anything that would be cool. Actual set starts about 35 seconds in after my hosting duties are complete.

How else aside from meta ads, barking in washington square park, emailing, posting daily, tagging comedians with several reposting, can I promote an indie show ????

I have a solid 2 min, 5 min and 10 min set. But would like to perform in an open mic to see how it works with audiences. Till date, everywhere I’ve enquired only have line ups on open mic nights. Any help, contacts?

has anyone else noticed the epidemic of fake AI E-Girls stealing bits from real comics?
