We are bringing together speakers and participants from the activist, scientific, disability, international, and voting rights communities to speak about health, democracy, and access: access to care, to science, to voting, and to full participation in public life.

Other scheduled speakers include:

- Stacey Abrams, voting rights advocate, New York Times best-selling author, and political leader
- Michael Lewis, best-selling author of Moneyball, The Big Short and, most recently of Blockers, the story of the DOGE destroyers and the federal employees and others who resisted; and

Official SUFS Post In Feb 2026, we dispatched an experienced associate with decades of West Africa investigative journalism expertise to conduct an on-the-ground fact-finding investigation. We presented this to Congress in a closed briefing.

Our on-the-ground investigation found that Guinea-Bissau’s institutional instability and severe resource constraints raise significant concerns about whether ANY complex clinical trial can be ethically overseen without extraordinary safeguards.

The ENTIRE yearly public health budget is <$500k USD.

Major conflicts of interest on the GB ethics board:

1st source: “a mafia” & alleged members paid “one way or another by Bandim.”

2nd former deputy minister of health: “a fan club… a friend’s club.”

3rd: ppl “inside the committee” were employed by Bandim & ethics sign-off occurred despite COIs.

Our investigation repeatedly encountered a central structural problem: Guinea-Bissau’s health infrastructure appears deeply dependent on Bandim, complicating the independence of oversight.

INASA sources asserted that Bandim “is the government,” and INASA refused to provide document access.

A second source said the government was “too dependent” on Bandim describing reliance on Bandim-linked processes for civil registration and vital statistics & that “all the evidence in intervention projects… malaria, TB… all of it comes from Bandim.”

One person cited significant ethical concerns including concerns about whether consent procedures ensured true understanding of risks because he creole word for HepB is febri amarelu which translates to “yellow fever” and is indistinguishable from the disease, yellow fever.

A former health deputy said there is one coroner in the country, currently out of Guinea-Bissau due to health conditions that cannot be treated locally, meaning “no one can determine a cause of death" and there were four health ministers in the past year, underscoring institutional volatility.

After presenting this investigation to Congress, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's offices inquired with the Guinea-Bissau government to confirm our findings. The study was cancelled with in 24 hours of our meeting, by the GB authorities.

So, why are we sharing this now?

We have stopped it once, we will stop this again. BUT WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT.

Official SUFS Post RFK Jr's CDC intends to move forward with a previously-canceled study of the Hepatitis B vaccine in newborns in Guinea-Bissau. We are fighting back ✊

It's time to take immediate action to halt RFK Jr.’s malicious and harmful study, which will intentionally withhold life-saving Hepatitis B vaccine from thousands of newborns in Guinea-Bissau.

Here’s the situation.

THIS IS NOT A SCIENTIFIC STUDY!

Against all international law, half of the infants in the study will be given placebos instead of the life-saving vaccine — dooming many to a life of chronic illness in a country without a significant healthcare system.

In Guinea-Bissau, where 15% of adults are already infected with Hepatitis B, this constitutes a gross violation of human rights by the WHO standards.

Article The Paradox of the 6th Measles Death in PA: Comorbidities.

Post image

Antivaxxers are quick to point out that many of those who passed prematurely had comorbid conditions, which begs the question:

💀 Does that make their preventable deaths more acceptable?

🤷‍♂️ How are the unvaccinated suffering from chronic illnesses in the first place?

Antivaxxers claim that vaccines cause chronic diseases -yet vaccine-preventable diseases continue to identify (and cull) the chronically-ill among the unvaccinated. It’s almost as though chronic diseases are not related to vaccines.

☯️ Schrödinger's Comorbidity: Simultaneously proof of vaccine injury** an**d an excuse to dismiss a preventable death.

Question How do we get more people to answer "I don't know" when they don't know?

American here. I have observed a culture of needing to have the answer to everything right away.

Instant gratification by looking for the first article that says something, or even worse, an AI summary that says what the "answer is" because the answers are right at our fingertips.

Much worse, an anti intellectual anti science wave has people thinking that "I don't know" is a sign of stupidity or deception.

In reality, I feel that accepting "I don't know" is the foundation of a critical thinker.

My question is, how do we bring "this" in every day life? How do we bring back curiosity? How to cultivate "I don't know" in the age where we have the "answers" at a moderate-speed connection?

Some thoughts I had were just encouraging people in-person to not use AI to find an answer, vet the sources, etc.

Thoughts?

Disease, Science, and the Transformation of Possibility

The eventual completion of the canal by the United States depended upon more than improved excavation machinery or engineering methods. It required adoption of a lock-and-lake design, construction of the Gatun Dam to create Gatun Lake, and locks to lift ships from sea level to the lake and lower them again at the opposite end.

It also required fundamental advances in scientific understanding, public health, and the organization of construction.

Carlos Juan Finlay advanced the hypothesis that mosquitoes transmitted yellow fever. Subsequent investigations established the role of mosquitoes in transmitting yellow fever and malaria, enabling new forms of disease prevention.

William Gorgas and his colleagues applied this knowledge through extensive sanitation and mosquito-control programs.

Drainage projects, mosquito control, water systems, sanitation workers, medical personnel, and public-health administration became essential components of canal construction.

The result was a dramatic reduction in infectious disease.

The achievement illustrates how scientific knowledge becomes effective through organized human action.

Discovering mechanisms of disease transmission was indispensable, but discovery alone was insufficient. The knowledge had to be translated into public institutions, coordinated programs, and sustained practical work.

The American construction period nevertheless recorded 5,609 deaths from disease and accidents. Historical records of both construction periods remain incomplete (Panama Canal Authority, n.d.-b).

The canal was an extraordinary engineering achievement, but its construction was also marked by racial segregation, unequal treatment of workers, injury, and death.

Its history should therefore not be romanticized.

Healthy Workers and Collective Achievement

The history demonstrates a fundamental causal relationship between the health of workers and the capacity of a society to accomplish collective tasks.

Human institutions may discriminate among workers by ancestry, nationality, or social status. Infectious diseases do not observe such social distinctions, but risks of infection, illness, and death are not necessarily distributed equally. Differences in biological susceptibility, living and working conditions, exposure to disease vectors, sanitation, and access to medical care can profoundly influence who becomes ill and who survives.

Malaria and yellow fever threatened workers and administrators from numerous backgrounds.

Protecting the workforce was therefore not merely a humanitarian consideration. It was an essential requirement for completing the canal.

Scientific understanding and public-health organization helped transform the undertaking from a repeated struggle against debilitating disease into an achievable engineering project.

The oxygen-mask principle applies here on an institutional scale.

Workers incapacitated by disease could not carry out the tasks necessary to construct the canal. The development of protective public-health measures preserved their capacity to work and contributed to the success of the entire undertaking.

There is a larger lesson.

When institutions protect human health, they protect the capacities upon which their own success depends.

The distinction between concern for individuals and concern for collective achievement is therefore often misleading.

Healthy individuals are among the necessary conditions for a functioning society.

The same relationship is visible following Panama’s earthquake.

Restoring medical care, drinking water, sanitation, housing, and transportation is not separate from restoring the nation’s capacity to recover.

It is part of that recovery.
