EMDR therapist discouraging Spravato treatment
My med provider (and the one before her) recommended spravato. I’ve been on a med roller coaster for decades and am at a point where I’m ready to try it. With my current schedule, now is the time.
I was approved by insurance but need to work with them about transportation. My state has good healthcare that will provide rides to appointments so I don’t think it’ll be a problem. I hope. The only thing I really see standing in my way is my EMDR therapist.
My prescriber thinks it would be good to try spravato, as does my talk therapist and the PHP/IOP I’ve been attending since March because of trauma. My EMDR therapist is very against it. I can tell she is one that is more into vitamins and natural remedies. I told her I was thinking about it because of tx resistant depression and she basically said that’s a term that is used too freely. I think she thinks EMDR will address depression just fine it’s own.
I’ve been doing EMDR since May and every time she tells me to avoid mind altering substances for 72 hours as we finish up. The first month I was dissociating and having horrible nightmares but that stopped. I had one rough EMDR hangover last month, but otherwise I’m tolerating it really well. No more dissociations, flashbacks or overwhelming distress. It’s making me feel stronger. I’m not overly concerned about spravato reigniting trauma.
This is the first time I’ve ever had providers directly contradict each other. I think it can’t hurt to at least try spravato and I don’t know how to get my EMDR therapist on board. Did anyone have providers who weren’t a fan if it and what did you say to them? And I’m curious what others experience has been doing the two therapies at once.
Thanks!!
