Almost 10 years later and this scene still sends chills up my spine.
Peter at first is doing a great job at trying not to look intimidated, but the minute Adrian threatens his loved ones, his steely resolve falters and he stares sheepishly into his lap. I love how he exits the car looking like he's about to throw up. It really drives home that, superhero or no superhero, Peter is a 15 year old boy being threatened by an adult, and a highly dangerous adult at that. One of the Top 10 greatest scenes in a Spider-Man film, probably Top 5.

Movies With Great Flowers Comes Great Responsibility! 💐
No matter the universe, every live-action Peter Parker has to go through the classic, awkward flower-buying phase. It’s pretty awesome seeing how all three generations of Spider-Man share the exact same clumsy romantic energy.

Movies Spider-Man films still criminally underuse women from his mythology.
When I say this, I don't mean that they failed their love interests. I mean that the Spider-Man mythology has a lot of women and for one reason or another they just don't have the chance to be shown. There's no real role for women in Spider-Man films other than the guardian, which is just Aunt May, or the love interest.
It took until Into the Spider-Verse to have a Spider-Woman in Gwen Stacy and a female villain in Olivia Octavius taking the stage, and it took Brand New Day to finally incorporate Jean DeWolff who has a different role from the usual suspects. Hell even the Venom movies finally did something meaningful with Mrs. Chen being a human ally to Venom, but she's an OC created for those movies.
My burning take here is that Sony have failed a lot of them even worse than Disney and Fox failing their Marvel heroine, villainess and supporting characters by just not giving them chances and when they do they end up with some of the most bizarre creative choices like the entirety of Madame Web, or trying to rewrite Silk to pander to male TV viewers before ultimately canning the series.

The Holland Trilogy Sucks

Spider-Man has been one of my favorite superheroes since childhood. Sam Raimi's trilogy was one of the reasons I fell in love with cinema, and I grew up consuming practically everything Marvel put out. So I don't make this argument lightly. I think the MCU's first three Spider-Man movies fundamentally misunderstood what makes Peter Parker such a compelling character.
My biggest issue with the Holland trilogy is how much it ties Peter's identity to the larger MCU. In Homecoming, he wants to prove himself worthy of being an Avenger. In Far From Home, he's struggling with the legacy of Tony Stark. And in No Way Home, the stakes escalate to the multiverse to the point where he needs other Spidermen to stand tall. But where is the ordinary guy who puts himself on the line for people who can't do anything for him?
To me, Spider-Man's defining quality isn't his ability to fight increasingly powerful villains. It's his willingness to help someone with a stolen bike, stop a robbery, or save a stranger, even when doing so costs him something personally. He's a hero because he chooses to be one, not because a bigger superhero has decided he's ready.
That's why I loved Brand New Day. It finally gives Peter the loneliness, sacrifice, and everyday struggles that make the character resonate. He's burnt out, isolated, and forced to watch the people he loves move on without him. For once, being Spider-Man doesn't make his life easier or more glamorous. It costs him something.
The film isn't perfect. But I think it understands something fundamental about Spider-Man that the previous films lost sight of, that Peter Parker's greatest strength is his humanity, and his greatest tragedy is that doing the right thing doesn't mean he gets to have everything he wants.
I'm curious how other Spider-Man fans feel. Did you feel that the first three Holland films underplayed Peter's everyday struggles, or do you think they were a worthwhile reinterpretation of the character? And does Brand New Day finally bring him closer to what makes Spider-Man special to you?
I wrote a longer piece about why I think the Holland trilogy falls short and why Brand New Day works for me:

Movies Spider-Man 2 was the first time my eyes were really opened to how tough Spider-Man truly is.
Between getting up after multiple hard, several story falls or crashing through or against anything around him while fighting Doc Ock, I remember being blown away as an 11 year old with how fast Spider-Man could bounce back.
Then I gradually learned about some of the stuff he overcame in the comics and I realized this was only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Spider-Man's durability.
