This bakery is planned for the corner of Elm St and Cedar St near Porter Square. Looking through the windows, the interior and kitchen look pretty finished, and there’s a register on the counter. Things look promising for an opening soon!

I’ll start with my current fav: Wednesdays only at the Mount Vernon in East Somerville. A packed lobster roll with fries for $16.99. This thing was so filled with lobster that you need to eat some lobster before you even pick it up. Hot tip: can ask for buttered.
Interested to hear what other neighbors have to share!

So I have been trying to go Sarma for a while and had a chance to take my girlfriend for her birthday and honestly it was quite disappointing. The veggie dishes being $22 for eggplant and for Sugar snap peas was not justified as they were loaded with over the top seasoning. The pork was a real meh being a specialty and one pasta dish tasted like canned tomatoes with no salt. My drink was $19 and tasted like thick prune juice.
The desert was supposed to be a homemade yogurt chocolate ice cream but it tasted like friendlies chocolate ice cream. Overall I spent $200 and it was the most meh experience.

Even our fair city(ies) has not been immune to the enshittifying effects we've seen affecting known businesses and restaurants across the country. I think back to places we lost (Deli-icious), places that are a fragment of their former glory (Red Bones), and places that went from bad to great to bad again before disappearing entirely (Cinderella's in Central). Often due to circumstances beyond their control, yet we mourn them nonetheless.
But we look to the now, the positive! What are some places that have maintained their high quality and deserved exalted status??

Sharing so links are in one spot:
Please consider donating to support Rei da Picanha and DaMata Barbershop as they face the difficult journey of rebuilding, and Los Toritos as they work to recover from their losses.
This is our opportunity to return the love and kindness they show East Somerville every day.

I go to lots of events, but many of them are at Aeronaut, Trident Bookstore, Somerville Theater, Crystal Ballroom, The Rockwell, City Winery and other venues that primarily advertise through their own websites.
A few months ago I made this website that aggregates events from all of those places and more into a single spot so you can easily go out and find something fun to do:
https://www.wickedbostonevents.com/
Let me know what you think, I'm not making any money off of this and there are no ads on it, it just felt useful to share :)
Also - I posted this in a different forum and got ideas for features including the map and I'm going to work on a way to submit new events and locations to add, if you feel like anything is missing or could be better leave a comment - thanks!

I thought I had another box lying around and didn't place an online order in time!
I've seen Chemex and Aeropress filters at quite a few stores and cafes, but I have only ever seen V60 filters on the shelf at Broadsheet. They were out of stock today, but they said they're due for a restock tomorrow.
Are there any other local spots that sell V60 filters?

Hello fellow Somerville residents!!! I’m taking a six-week feature writing course in graduate school and am hoping to learn about some of the interesting subcultures and communities around Somerville.
This can be groups that form around shared hobbies, activities, or niche interests, with a focus on communities that exist outside the mainstream or are maybe misunderstood or stigmatized by society. Examples of subcultures can range from religion to sports to polycules. The more niche, the better!
If you know of any interesting subcultures, events or communities in Somerville, I would love to hear about them. Are you part of one yourself? I’d love to hear about it, interview you, and learn more about what brings your community together. Feel free to comment or send me a message. I’d love to hear your ideas!!

Saw a guy shining a light in a window, so I decided to pause my walk (around 10pm) and watch. Hear a screen window get torn off. My initial idea is to walk by, not looking at him, but just see if he leaves. He pauses and turns off his light when I walk by. I glance over and see him placing the screen he ripped off on his head (very strange).
I get about two houses down the street and he goes back to trying door handles. I call the police, watching him from across the street, a few houses down. He goes between trying a side door and a porch door. The officer arrives, no lights, two or three minutes later. I point the guy out. The officer does the usual confrontation, leading to asking him what he's doing to which he answers "I saw a nice jacket in there and I wanted to get it." I wander away when they get to the Miranda rights.
Just odd. Concerning but the guy was pretty unaware of his surroundings and also was wearing a screen net on his head at time of arrest so something was going on with that.

I work remote but my partner is considering a 1 to 2 year contract near Tufts so we're looking at housing options in Somerville/Cambridge. I'm told the pricing is comparable to NYC - at least where we are, StreetEasy doesn't really exist anymore so most housing happens through realtors or word of mouth, which is why I'm not putting too much stake in what I'm seeing online (which looks significantly cheaper).
Right now we live in a not-very-fancy neighborhood in BK, outside of NYC. We pay $5.5k for a 2 bed/1 bath, not renovated, not outdoor space, about 800 square feet. We pay an additional $700/month for parking. We pay a lot less than our friends who are looking into 2beds in Brooklyn now, most of which are well above $7k and don't have additional bathrooms or parking. One friend just told me she "lucked into" a great deal on a 3bed in a very nice area and she pays $12k, plus about $1200 for parking.
Is that about the going rate in Somerville/Cambridge/greater Boston for a 2 bed?

Looking for a math tutor for my high school sophomore. For Algebra 2 specifically. Thx.

I'm not sure if it's permanent, or a harbinger, but the rumble strip east of Central makes no sense, at best. Good job penalizing all path users OTHER than gas mopeds and throttle-operated ebikes with 3" tires and front suspension. Can't wait to suddenly discover how slippery that thing is when I'm running this winter.
Really hope there's some recording of the Brain Genius meeting where this was proposed. Really want to hear how many times Lance Armstrong, who retired 20 years ago, was mentioned. Would love to see if anyone had the thought "maybe we should regulate the fastest, most obviously illegal, most recklessly operated vehicles first?" Would love to see how fast it took Jake, if present, to go from 0 to "you're not seriously expecting me to reassign police from the Candy Crush Unit?"
Just feels like the most ineffectual "fix" if safety is the goal. Hopefully numbers confirm if before we roll out more.

I had a pretty cut and dry case, have email receipts, reported it… got an email back saying that they only investigate cases with widespread harm to multiple tenants, and don’t have time to investigate everything. So if you were planning to fill out a complaint, don‘t bother unless you have something newsworthy I guess. Kinda lame.

A brown long-haired dachshund with not collar was wandering around on the corner of Holland and Simpson. If he’s yours I would check there or with Animal Control!

was walking along albion st from Somerville into south medford with my dog around 2pm, caught this guy running from the big hill between the stairs and the new retaining wall construction site to the parking lot of Columbus Park before heading into the parking lots along mystic.
I initially thought it was a German shepherd - even at a distance I could tell he was bigger than my 40-lb dog. Seemed well fed, bet he's feasting on the multitude of bunnies back there, but either way good reminder to keep your pets leashed & inside otherwise! We usually let my guy off leash for a little bit to (very futilely) chase bunnies over there during quiet hours, but not anymore...

It seems there are various heights of speed bumps that have been installed across the city in the past couple of years. How is the height for each location determined, and is the height and depth carefully calculated and measured?

I can understand drivers being upset about the Elm / Mossland changes but the level of outrage for lots of people for how the character of the city that they grew up in has been destroyed, is surprising. What part of people's formative experiences wouldn't have been possible if we had bike lanes? Is the "soul of Somerville" dependent upon it being quick and easy to drive? (I'm not sure driving here was ever pleasant)
I'm a transplant and a cyclist so obviously I'm part of the problem and the city would be better off if I'd never come here, but I'm curious as to how exactly we've ruined the city on such a fundamental level.
