Ai slop sign for “Sarah Bradlee Fulton Day”
It’s sad that the city wasn’t willing to pay a graphic designer a nominal fee to create a poster that would look so much better…

After renting in Arlington, our family is interested in buying. Parents with kids: what can you tell me about Medford? Is the school system adequate for your needs? How is the young family community?

hullo hullo folks, next to the great american beer hall and sharing a lot with the theory dispensary you’ll find Arts Collaborative Medford- your future favorite place to see and make art.
Make and Mingle is a free weekly hang out where you can come and work on any projects that you have. 7PM-9PM you‘ll make art, have laughs, debate terrible reality tv, pretty much whatever is up my guy. Working on a cool knitting piece that fell to the wayside? A block of wood you swear you can see an eye in it? We got enough of Jerry, Ben thinks his kick flips are sick enough to bring a crowd and wants to show off. I’ll always be working on something or starting something to distract from the main thing I’m supposed to be working on.
Come for the people stay for the art, we always have a show going and it’s free to view. I am but one of the many studio artists that call this place home so welcome yourself in, I maybe got chips, definitely oranges. I always have oranges but that’s a story for another time.
Hope to see yall there, sign ups aren’t required but it helps me figure out how many chairs to put out!

I am trying to understand the pros and cons to the potential new dorm on Boston and North.
Edit: Dorm was the wrong phrase. Private student housing is more accurate. I knew it wasn't owned by Tufts.
Thus far, I'm aware that there was a vote, which failed, and a second late night sketchy vote, which passed, but will result in a veto.
I support the veto solely due to the sketchy second vote. However, idk where to land on the development.
Where are y'all at?
Edit to add: I have no issues with students in my community. I have concerns with a private student accommodation of that size.
Final edit: someone brought up that the developer never shoveled last winter. On that alone, they can pound sand.

Looking to get a short notice haircut before a wedding. Any recommendations in the area that would have availability by the end of the week? My usual barber is booked up.
Male with wavy hair.
Stay dry out there, and thanks!

Questions?
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone has any information, good or bad, regarding what it's like to live in any of the 4 buildings at Mystic Place Apartments?
My daughter is considering not renewing the lease where her, myself and her brother live. We all live in different buildings within the same complex.
She feels that she doesn't have her complete independence living so close to family. At the same time, it has been helpful living amongst family members in many different ways.
Also, living where we are, she already knows what to expect from management. It can be scary moving to another area specially if you do not know anyone that's ever lived there. Not knowing the rules or if they actually enforced the rules. It seems like that area can be expensive?
As far as pros and cons to where we now reside, I believe there's many positives. We currently live right next to the shopping center. She works within one of those stores. In this new location, she could transfer to the store, which is located right at the Assembly Square Mall. There is easy access to public transportation as well. She does not have a car.

this is just a personal review from a happy diner! i randomly walked into ebisuya on an exhausting day after work because i saw the beautiful shokupan being displayed. i tried their shokupan WOWW (and i had tried a lot of shokupans), and i had to come back for their dining menu. i tried the miso carbonara and wood-fired pizza and as someone who personally rarely enjoy pasta and pizza (please don’t come for me), i already planned to come back to try other pastas and pizzas!! the pasta is handmade, so chewy and absorb the sauce nicely. the miso sauce is light, balanced but flavorful. the crust of the pizza is thin, the flavor from the dough and extreme heat-charring really creates a light, pleasant bitterness that dance with the flavor from the slightly sweeet sauce, marinated beef and the slight sourness from arugula so well. and it’s honestly one of the best pizza crust i have personally tried (im a big fan of thin, wood-fired crust)
the best part is the people who work there!! i felt so welcomed and happy being a solo diner. they are the reason why i’m writing this review!
they are soft opening and i believe they open for lunch 11-2pm Tuesday-Sunday, and 5pm-8pm Wednesday - Sunday for dinner.
edit: they offered me the soft serves (a testing item i think) and they are amazing as well, esp the houjicha flavor. so rich, creamy and yes, not-too-sweet!!

Many of our City Councilors rightfully bemoan the challenges of funding city services as the cost of doing city business increases and complain about funding formulas. Sure, Medford receives less than other cities in similar size such as Everett, but the bigger issue is that State Aid as a share of local government revenue is 31 percent nationally but is only 26 percent in Massachusetts (See Source #1).
Despite that, the default solution from the Council usually comes down to three solutions. They all involve tax hikes or tax shifts. None of them involve demanding Beacon Hill give all towns and cities a fairer share.
1) Complain about Proposition 2 1/2, a fiscal control measure that protects voter rights by requiring residents to have a say at the ballot box before a municipality can impose large property tax increases.
2) Ask for more revenue through Proposition 2 1/2 overrides or large debt exclusions (such as the impending one for our high school project).
3) Shift tax obligations around through a residential exemption, which cuts taxes for more affordable owner-occupied homes but asks those with large homes and non-owner-occupied homes to pay more.
But is our City Council missing the forest for the trees?
· Residents sent above-average dollars to the state but receive below-average dollars back.
· Local governments are forced to cover the difference with higher property taxes and/or declining city services due to lower funding and/or state policies.
· Case in point: Massachusetts residents send significant sums of money to Beacon Hill (9th most per capita in state taxes in the nation as of 2023 (Source #2)), but as previously noted, towns and cities receive less state support per tax dollar (26%) than the national average (31%).
· Medford is budgeted to receive $33,654,547 in local aid for FY 2026 (Source #3). Quick math says we could expect it to be $40,126,575 if towns and cities got 31%. That's a $6,472,028 difference, slightly less than the $7.5 million funded from our overrides in 2024.
Our City Council frequently passes resolutions or encourages discussion on national and international issues. Why don't they exert a similar amount of energy toward lobbying the state for greater financial transparency (an audit) and an equitable share of state tax dollars to protect Medford home and business owners against more tax hikes?
Further, six out of seven City Councilors belong to Our Revolution Medford, which has a detailed policy platform advocating against Proposition 2 1/2 and calling for school funding reform, but the group hasn't said anything about the low local funding share relative to other states on their platform.
If six out of seven of our Councilors and all of our School Committee members belong to a sponsoring group that wants municipal funding reform, why isn't our Council pushing for the audit to happen and demanding all towns and cities get a bigger share of state revenue? Why is the default response so often property tax hikes?

I'd like to try all of the pizza in Medford. What are your favorite spots. I can think of at least 5 pizza places but there's probably way more. Let's discuss every place.
I'm trying to be neutral with the first post and not mention any specific place or influence the discussion so that everyone has a fair chance.

I know this sounds strange, but there's a stretch of Mystic Avenue roughly between Columbia Road and Billings Ave where the air pressure makes my ears pop. This has been pretty consistent. I first noticed this at Carlino Guitars, and I mentioned it to Eddie, the shopkeeper, and he said his ears pop all the time too. It happened again when I was at Atlas Liquors, and the cashier there also told me his ears pop pretty often while he's working. Sometimes when I'm just driving through my ears will pop. Has anyone else experienced this and/or know what might cause it? Mystic Ave is pretty flat and not at a particularly high elevation. Is there someplace nearby causing some kind of electromagnetic pulse that's affecting the atmosphere? It's a super weird phenomenon and doesn't happen anywhere else in Medford in my experience.

Apparently there was a meeting on 10/5 to determine if demolishing the home here would be detrimental to the cultural fabric of Medford. Anyone know what the outcome was? I fear for the future of Mystic Ave if we’re preserving structures like this and creating barriers for prospective developers to make that road something more than a body shop. Because it’s one of the few last remaining wood homes…..
