Missed Connection- Davidson Glacier

9.16.26

You: bus driver/canoe guide for Alaska X taking a group out to Davidson Glacier, hung back on the trail so I didn’t fall behind and get lost taking photos; pretended my attempts at jokes and flirting weren’t absolutely terrible

Me: the youngest person on the tour (besides you and the other guides) by at least 25 years, playing in the quicksand/silt and taking pictures of every single mushroom we passed, the bane of every trail guide’s existence

I know your season ends 9.30 and you’re getting back to your kids in Utah (sure you saw my absolute despair and immediate relief when you dropped that one lol), but I seriously regret not getting your number or socials and praying reddit can fix my mistake. Hope you somehow see this, and that real cheese lives up to those oars

Lost Apple Tag - Anyone nearby?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I think my Apple tag fell out of my backpack. But for the life of me I don’t know if I had anything connected to it. My ADHD brain can’t recall. Curious if anyone is in Skagway/nearby that may be interested in a little scavenger hunt? I’m 99% sure there is nothing attached, but at the very least, feel bad there is trash/litter on the ground.

Housing search for next summer

We've been looking at expanding a popular eatery in Juneau to Skagway (no, I am not at liberty to disclose the name as of yet). I have already secured housing for myself, but I need to house 2-3 other employees as well. A 2 bedroom situation would be perfect, but I'm also open to splitting them up.

Alternatively, if anyone local is interested or looking for a summer job, we'll be running from April to October and have pretty competitive pay and extremely strong history of employee retention. But it ain't for slackers, we have a reputation to uphold.

Edit to add: This would be for NEXT summer. 2027. I know housing is madness there, just trying to get a jump on it.

Higher put in for the Taiya river. Nourse river runnable?

Hello everyone, I'm a river guide in Haines and am interested in finding a higher put in for the taiya to do a longer float. Is there anywhere that's a good spot? Is it mostly going to be pack rafting? Is the Nourse runnable?

How many days for Skagway?

I’m working in Anchorage for the summer, and will be driving out at the end, and will be going to Skagway for my first time! (Third time driving to/from).

How many days do I realistically need to see the best of Skagway?

I like ~moderate~ hikes (ie, I’m not doing 3,000 feet of elevation in 2 miles lol), beautiful drives, history, yummy food. It would also be the very end of September/first few days of October, so I know a lot will already be closed.

If anyone knows what to do in Haines as well, I’ll be driving there first, and taking the ferry to Skagway.

Right now my plan is to leave Anchorage 9/27, get to Haines junction that night. Leave in the morning, get to Haines around noon on 9/28, spend the night there. Take the ferry to Skagway 9/29. Spend 4 nights in Skagway, leave 10/3 for Whitehorse.

Is 4 nights in Skagway too much?

The issue is I really want to ride the train, and it’s operating on 9/30 (sold out right now but they said normally they open up day of tickets), and it’s not operating again until 10/6, but I have to be in Whitehorse by Saturday night, 10/3.

I also am planning on wild camping, I have a rooftop tent, so if anyone has good spots you recommend for that around Skagway or Haines.

Thanks so much!

Local recommendations.

My husband and I are currently on our honeymoon. We will be in Skagway tomorrow with no excursions planned. We only have the afternoon. What seafoid restaurants/museums/ etc are recommended by locals or frequent Alaska travelers?

Golden goat mine

A few years ago I went on a hike up Reid falls, all the way to the glacier. On my way up, I found a pipe sticking out of the ground, with the words “golden goat mine”. It was the NW corner post for this mine. Since then I have hiked this around 5 more times and haven’t found any other posts or anything that looks like a mine. There is no public information on a mine or mine claim with that name anywhere I’ve checked. Has anyone heard of this mine? Any help would be appreciated.

Boy Scout Patch trading

I'll be in Skagway this week helping install a POS system at the Holland Skagway Inn. Long shot, but are there any Scout people that might have a couple of patches to trade? I brought a few patches from the Tampa area that I'd be looking to trade for some Great Alaska Council patches.

Returner curious about volunteer stuff

I’m headed back up for my third season and was wondering what volunteer opportunities are in town? I will be working full time but get depressed when I’m not busy, LOL. For some context: I’m 21, at least passingly intelligent, and powerlift recreationally. Thank you!

Lodging

Hello all! I am going to Skagway for a summer job this upcoming season. The company I am working with does not provide housing. I am trying to find some kind of room or space for rent. I am small and quiet. I just need access to a bed and a shower.

Hi! I went to Skagway this past July on a cruise and was trying to collect a patch and pin from each stop. Skagway was our first stop so I grabbed a random patch and pin but at my other 2 stops I got patches that matched each other (seen above). I can’t seem to find these patches available online anywhere and would love to have all my patches to be the same. Does anyone know where I could find them to buy or know someone selling them second hand? I live literally across the country and definitely won’t be back for many years sadly. Thank you!

Commuting from Haines?

Is it possible to commute to Skagway from Haines by personal boat? Housing doesn’t seem to be as hard to come by in Haines as it is in Skagway. I understand driving to be a non-starter, and the ferry to be inconvenient and expensive at best. I’m wondering if it’s realistic or even possible to use my own motorboat to travel back and forth during the cruising season.

Crow "talked" to us?

I thought this was fun... my family went on an Alaskan cruise in July with a stop in Skagway. While we were walking around downtown, a crow landed on a sign next to me. I said hello, and it said "Quah" to me several times while my child and I spoke at it. Just thought it was silly and fun. Anyone else have this happen while there? The other crowd ignored us so it just made that one stand out.

Unsafe experience — tourists beware

⚠️ On Sept 6th, my last memory was being at Happy Endings bar dancing. I later woke up in a field with no memory, no hangover, and my belongings still at the bar. Police told me I was put in a taxi, but I don’t recall this.

This wasn’t “just drunk” — I could have died. After sharing my story, others confirmed this happens every year at this bar. Please think twice before going.

I have a favor to ask

Years ago, I made a trip to hike the Golden Trail as a Boy Scout, and fell in love with jade. I bought a couple tourist Knick-knacks made of it, but over the years have lost my favorite. It was a jade pendant on a necklace. I loved the size, the shape, and most importantly, the fact that while it was smooth was not actually polished. It didn’t have much of a shine to it. This is why it’s been difficult to find a replacement, as everything I’ve found doesn’t have the same rough look to it.

I don’t remember the shop I got it from, but it was a typical tourist trap so I assume it’d be easy to find. If anyone is willing to look around and find one, I’d be willing to reimburse them if they could buy and ship it to me, as well as a bit of pocket money as compensation

If you’d be willing to take a look, send me a PM and I can further describe it as best I can remember

Visiting in a few days! What to do?

Hello everyone! I will be in Skagway on Tuesday (on a cruise right now)…my partner and I didn’t schedule an excursion to save money. But, I’m wondering if there are suggestions to really embrace the experience of being in Skagway. We will have most of the day off ship. We love wildlife, nature, also antiques, metal detecting, breathtaking scenery, etc. anyone have any suggestions for us? Also, any really good restaurants to catch some lunch or dinner? Little hole in the wall places that offer amazing tastes of authentic food?

Thank you!!

Is this typical nightlife for women in Skagway?

Hey everyone — I’m new to Skagway and just had my first night out. I’m wondering how common this kind of experience is, especially for women.

Last night, my friend and I were approached by multiple men who crossed serious boundaries (including unsolicited touching), we witnessed a bar fight almost break out before the gentleman was forcibly kicked out , and I personally got yelled at by an older man who started talking inappropriately about his genitals and making sexual gestures(the same man that caused the scene that made the other man be removed)

I wasn’t expecting that kind of energy here, and I’m hoping this was just a one-off bad night. To the women (or anyone familiar with the scene) — is this typical, or did we just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time?
