Why do British people think Americans say “waste paper basket.” Never once have I or anyone I know said these words.

He is a comedian not an actual linguist. This is a bit.

Yes, I understand that he’s trying to be funny. It would work better if he were actually familiar with American vernacular.

His audience are not Americans. They seem to have enjoyed it.

Europeans have to make jokes about Americans because if they joked about each other there'd be another world war.

I'm Canadian and I'm pretty sure I heard it as a kid so I would think it was British origin.

Because it was funny to hear him speak in an American accent. You have to think how does one practice a non southern/norther accent? Just use as little pronunciation or enunciation as possible?

Tbf, most people I know don't call it a 'trash bin', they call it a 'trash can'.

Or "eyeglasses" nobody says that except pricks trying too hard to sound fancy

Honestly, I always thought it was a British thing. It sounds so long and formal, I could easily imagine it in a British accent.

The only time I've heard it used in the states was to mock people who say waste paper basket.
