Shit, when I (brit) worked in a Canadian jeans shop and and older American gentleman came in and loudly asked if we sold suspenders i was a little taken aback. I asked if they were for his wife and he looked very offended and said, "No for me of course".

I needed to go for a sit down after that. That's when I learnt he meant braces.

Is that the British term for the straps you wear around your shoulders for your pants? We call those suspenders.
