I can’t take this criticism seriously from the culture which refers to soap as “washing-up liquid”.

Differentiates it from a bar of soap..plus it's a liquid

well that works in the other way too. the only reason people say 'eyeglasses' is because 'glasses' can also refer to multiple glass cups.

Like taskmaster which asked to grab a box to fit 20 glasses...then come to find out they are actually drinking glasses.

Surely there would be enough context clues for you to work with there?

And it is used to wash dishes, or the washing up.

“Dish soap” also differentiates it from a bar of soap.

"Dish soap" to me would be a bar of soap that goes in a soap dish

It’s just called soap. If there is a need to differentiate…like asking someone to pick up soap from the store, then you would call it liquid soap or bar soap.

Be honest, you call it dish soap, just like the dude said.

I call it washing up liquid, or maybe by brand, I don't think ive ever said dish soap. That makes me think that im going to rub a bar of soap on a plate.

but what about like fairy washing up liquid vs liquid hand soap

we have liquid soap that is for hands as well, which I would assume is what was being refered to if someone asked for liquid soap.

what do you call that vs the thicker grees busting stuff i call washing up liquid like this

We differentiate them by dish soap and hand soap. Dish soap gets grease off dishes and oil off of birds. Hand soap generally has moisturizers to not be as harsh on your skin.

What do you use on cutlery and drinking glasses then?

1

u/Jon3laze 9h ago

Silverware/utensils and cups are considered dishes so dish soap. ;)

Dish soap. Sometimes dish detergent.

Because it's not soap, it's detergent.
