These posts all have the same issue, they completely don't understand how people lived. They see tv and the brady bunch all flying to hawaii and think everyone did that. I'm 51 and in my childhood eating out was rare, nobody flew anywhere on vacation and people drive the same cars for so long it's how you knew who was coming down the road. The only people I knew who "lived like rock stars" were single males who had no kids and had the boss job at the factory.
I remember my dad in the 1980s, working as a police officer, with my mom working as basically a secretary, barely making ends meet with three kids. I still remember when my dad said that he had to buy used tires for his car because he couldn't afford new ones. It's both funny and embarassing for the posters of such nonsense to actually believe what they are spouting.
This brought back a memory for me - when my dad got a flat tire on his truck we took moms car to the junkyard and picked through a huge stack of tires to find one in the right size with some decent tread on it. Then we went in the office and haggled a bit. But it was a very comfortable middle class upbringing - both parents were teachers and I have nothing but good memories. My only time on an airplane before college was to go to grandpa’s funeral and eating out at restaurants is something I don’t really remember at all other than a big family gathering maybe a couple times a year. When a Dairy Queen opened in our town it was a huge thing and every once in a while we’d get money to buy a cone and hang out with other kids outside the DQ.
I remember going to the only McDonalds in town; the church bus picked up us kids, and bought us a single burger, fries and Coke. The Coke was especially good becaue we couldn't afford it in our house.
