These posts all have the same issue, they completely don't understand how people lived. They see tv and the brady bunch all flying to hawaii and think everyone did that. I'm 51 and in my childhood eating out was rare, nobody flew anywhere on vacation and people drive the same cars for so long it's how you knew who was coming down the road. The only people I knew who "lived like rock stars" were single males who had no kids and had the boss job at the factory.
I remember my dad in the 1980s, working as a police officer, with my mom working as basically a secretary, barely making ends meet with three kids. I still remember when my dad said that he had to buy used tires for his car because he couldn't afford new ones. It's both funny and embarassing for the posters of such nonsense to actually believe what they are spouting.
You realize we can just compare the median salary to what the shelter, food, transportation, education, childcare and healthcare cost right? TV's are cheap, but living is not. It's not complicated to see that for the things that matter, the essentials have all outpaced wages dramatically. Most people would need a 50% raise to have similar purchasing power to what we did in the 80's.
Then you know it's the same song, just a different dance. Each generation has their issues. I remember in the late1970s having to borrow a suit from my mom's friend's husband just to have something nice to wear to an awards banquet because they had no money to spend on nice clothes for the kids.
