The safest place a kid should feel is the company of their parents. They should be able to trust what their parents say. Having a parent put a kid in that type of scenario is a betrayal of trust. They aren't meant to be the butt of jokes for your amusement.

I’m loving how all the people saying otherwise are getting downvoted into oblivion. I’m all about pranking my kids, but with a little class and minus the fear.

My kid's are out in the world doing great. I doubt you'd want to compare credentials.

Bud, you think putting a fake ghost on a screen to scare a kid is a betrayal of trust. That alone marks you as uselessly weak parent. When are they going to find out Santa isn't real? Tooth fairy? God? Those aren't betrayals, or are they?

My kid's are flourishing. They're adults. Happily married, one well employed the other self employed.

Yeah. telling a young child to go into a room and set them up to be scared while you hold the door shut? That's some demented shit. Says more about the "parent" than anything else.

You sound not only like a shit parent. But a shit human.

You're kids are too old to be relevant to this discussion then. Scaring the crap out of a kid and then immediately anchoring that fear onto the device itself is a good thing.

Parent should be doing this often even. Why? Because maybe if they are really lucky the kid wont even want to be in the same room with a phone. Can you imagine? It may be the cure needed to counteract the addiction to the dopamine hits that they get from the device.

Could be onto something here. You're grandchildren wont be able to benefit from that though, their phones will little happy feel good places where they can get all their safety and warm fuzzy feelz.

Wow, how pathetic that you think this has merit as a responsible way to reduce screen time. These children are 3-6; if your 3-6yo is addicted to a phone, newsflash, you’re already a bad parent.

You lost me in the first half. It's an awesome way to attach fear and distrust to the phone and the content inside it. Second half of your comment we agree.

I don’t need to instill fear or distrust in my children because they speak English and I can communicate with them, for goodness sake.

no conversation you have will ever even come close to the instinctual response of a good visual based jumped scare. that sh goes right to the lizard brain forever. They wont even want to be in the same room as a smart phone.

Usually when you try to take a device away from a kid that has been raised by ppl like you, you have to fight through tears and meltdown. But imagine if you took it even further, now the phone is making random ghost noises even at night. 3am and it's wailing, gurgling, struggling through agonal breathing. maybe even laughing.

The kid wont even want to be in a room alone with a phone. That's a good thing. and no conversation will ever even approach that level of emotional affect.

anything to counteract the dopamine hits that parents lik eyou have your kids itching all day for.

Alrighty, I'll step into the ring. I work in childcare.

Would you be super okie-dokey okay with this if I set up the tablet with this filter, told one of the kids under my care to go into the bathroom, then held the door shut while they screamed and cried to get out?

These kids are, after all, ranging from 3-6 years old. Perfectly relevant to the conversation.

There's lots of stuff I dont want a random childcare attendant doing with my children that I reserve as exclusive to family. Tickling is one. Helping them to decide their gender is one, but the list is endless I'm sure youre aware.

Point is, there are lots of activities that are ethical for family members to do that are simultaneously unethical for a childcare attendant to do, do you agree with that?

There's a difference between telling a child a comforting myth isn't true and intentionally frightening them for sick kicks.

Is it a betrayal of trust though? Im curious if you'll try and do a little rhetorical tap dance for me around that point?

Yeah there is a difference between the two. Is that difference a betrayal of trust being present in one and not the other?

Honestly scaring the crap out these kids and immediately emotionally anchoring that fear onto the device itself with the fake ghost is probably HELPING these kids to be suspicious of devices for the rest of their lives. Do this more and more and maybe the kid wont even want to be in a room with a phone. Can you imagine?

Just tap out, you have a lot to learn obviously. With each reply you are just further confirming your beliefs are fucked

Just tap out is like the millennial reddit-male life mantra. Honestly your generation is worse than boomers.

Would you care to attempt to do a rhetorical dance around the 'betrayal of trust' contradiction?

I’m 56

1

u/HatAvailable5702 6h ago

Well I got the 'your generation is worse than boomers' part right at least.

Pretty simple question about the state of a 'betrayal of trust'. You can't answer because its damning to your perspective.

6

u/24rawvibes 1d ago

Context just went right over your head my guy.

0

u/HatAvailable5702 1d ago

No it didn't. I pointed out a contradiction centering on 'betrayal of trust'. If scaring children with fake ghosts is unethical because it is a 'betrayal of trust' then it would seem to a thinking man that other pro-social behaviours are also unethical because they are 'betrayals of trust'. like santa claus.
