[PC] Star Wars Galactic Racer for 20% off
The game is 20% off according to isthereanydeal and I've been eyeballing it since launch, but I've also heard that the game is lacking content and that most people should wait for a sale. Anyone whose played it semi-extensively have opinions on that? Is 20% off a big enough sale to warrant the purchase for the content on offer? And how competent is the singleplayer element, or is it hard carried by the multiplayer side of the game?
EDIT: Also how is the campaign? Is it an actual story mode w/ characters and... Well... A story, or is it more like old school racing games where it's just a vehicle to put you through stages?
EDIT 2: I bought the game.

It‘s amazing. A 9.5/10 for me. (If they add voice/text chat it’s a 10) Campaign is well made, challenges are fun and the multiplayer is great to just sink endless hours into. There‘s so much to unlock both in single abd multiplayer. I am 20 hours in and still unlock bew perks/parts.
It is a bit expensive but if you can get it at a discount it really is a nobrainer for me.

Get it and don’t look back. I was on the fence because most racing games don’t grab me despite wanting to like them, this one gets its hooks in quick

Just to play devil’s advocate, the game just came out, and Star Wars games seem to go down in price very quickly compared to other licensed franchises. Star Wars Outlaws isn’t even two years old and it’s already hit a $10 all-time-low (putting aside however you may feel about Outlaws). If you’re already not committed to paying MSRP and the positive reviews haven’t moved you, you could save way more money by waiting.

The singleplayer is great ! The campaign hook you for hours. There is a story, nice to follow and its a roguelike campaign. When you crash too much you end your tournament, and start a new one with upgrades

Oh, the story IS the roguelite mode? Neat. I was under the assumption that the game essentially had 3 modes, that being Story/Roguelite/Multiplayer.

No it is a very fun story mode. Story is some dialogue and sometimes cutscenes between stages but it is all very integrated so it truly feels like you are in a champoinship. Best racing game I ever played.

Yeah and thats not an easy campaign ahaha ! There is the solo campaign which is a roguelike story driven. Some solo small tournaments with a specific theme, some solo time trials and the multiplayer. The multiplayer has 4 different modes

Bro I swear to fucking god, the game is not lacking content some people just want to cry that it's not all pod racing. There is a fucking shit ton of context to the point that this legit feels like one of the most feature complete games I have played in a while from a AAA studio. Is the game perfect, absolutely fucking not. Could they add more? Absolutely because every game could "add more". But it's well worth the price and I am the exact opposite audience for this game. I couldn't care less about star wars and don't really play racing games, game is still fucking great.

One of the best racing games to come out in years. The quality of the racing is worth the price of admission, imo. Story mode is great, the characters have personality. The roguelike aspect means each run is different and you unlock upgrades frequently. There are stats that carry over between runs so you're not starting from scratch each time.
If you wanna support games like this, I highly recommend buying.

Super fun, and super shallow. The racing itself is awesome. Really fast, lots of really fun passes and close finishes. The tracks are super hard until you learn them and then really fun when you get good at them. The problem is there are only a couple worlds and all the tracks use pieces of each other, and they're all really really short. Like 30-60 second lap short. Gets repetitive very fast. Campaign has a very barebones story, it's basically just a backstory for you and a rival for you to go against.
I bet this game goes to gamepass, and when it does, the first $15-20 dlc for more maps will be totally worth it. I don't think this is a $50 game as is.

How long did you get out of the game before it got repetitive?

u/Eat--The--Rich-- 1d ago
Not long. You run the same tracks over and over and over, and because it puts the worlds in the same order every time and you have to progress through them each time, you get sick of jakku and the acid planet super fast. The acid planet has some tracks that are literally 10 second laps.

I am getting a lot of fun just doing the campaign right now. I payed roughly 45 euro for the physical edition. I feel like I am getting a lot of value for that price. A roguelite campaign with vehicles to unlock + vehicle customization, different "classes" to unlock - you get campaign mode, scenario mode, arcade and multiplayer mode.
I dont feel its lacking content at all, I just want more because its very enjoyable and I would gladly pay for DLC.
Im not a great player, so I am 5 hours in and still in act 1 of the campaign lol, playing on recommended difficulty. If the goal is to progress the story, losing will cause some friction, but that is somewhat alleviated by all the unlocks, and also buildmaking you can try. I think the whole campaign will probably take me 20 hours at least, not counting the scenarios. Multiplayer is a novelty, but there are some fun unlocks there, and I do enjoy gaming online as well.

Amazing game. Definitely worth it. I've got about 30 hours in it now.
It does have a story mode with characters and a story. But it's not anything ground breaking. You got an old grudge against the top racer. So you out race him. That's it. That's the story. Sebulba did crack me up a few times though.

it's still soooo expensive for what it is. There is at most 30hrs of playtime here. I'm gonna wait a while for a much larger sale. I'd pay $40 or less for this. It does look really good though.

I paid full price at launch. Roughly 15 hours in and not done with the base campaign yet. I am having a blast with it, personally. It’s 100% worth it on a sale, and imo worth it at full price.

Pay full price. It’s worth it for a game this good. Both multi and single are awesome!

I returned it and am waiting for a good size sale post dlc. As a Star Wars fan it’s more of a battler than a racer.

I'm not into racing games because they always lack a meaningful story and also get repetitive very fast imo but GR is more arcadey than a proper racing game with enough of a reason to keep you racing, the story is nothing to write home about but it's not terrible.
The strength of the game is the racing, sound, tactile nature of your vehicle, the speed, redlining. All the racers get weapons, shields, etc which is another element of the racing. I always make sure I have a shield because some of the racers will absolutely ruin your position in the last lap.
There are only about 7 or 8 worlds with each having three different courses and different modes you can race in: racing, elimination, time trials, experimental, backwards courses.
I don't know the budget but it feels like the exact product they wanted to make. No local co-op which sucks but I assume that's because of rendering technique not allowing two different povs.
I started on Ace difficulty(highest), don't play online, and it took me about eight hours to get to act 3 but I'm getting outclassed by everyone in act 3.
Also you can play it on Amazon Luna if you have Prime.

I think you are getting outclassed in act 3 because it’s also rogue lite esc. I have a similar experience, just got to act 3 playing on ace. I like that I can’t expect to win every race, and can actually expect to lose. You really need a good build to win by the end of a tour. And then you can add permanent upgrades to your racer which helps you win later tours. I wonder if it will be “easy” at some point on the hardest difficulty jsut because of upgrades. I don’t imagine so tbh

I never stick with racing games for this long and I believe I am with this one because it's rogue lite but for me that's just getting resiliency whenever I can find it.
After I'd earned upgrade currency through my first two tours, I tore through the first two worlds, only to get completely demolished by the cold status on the third. I now just upgrade resiliency whenever I can get it because I'm absolutely useless when cold or anything.
Act 3 is tough because you keep losing because you lose if that makes sense. Not getting top 3 gives you 1 tuning ability and like 500 creds. I literally just lost -780 cred betting on Kestar to win, I swear I bet he'd win 1st and he did but I lost 2000. Idk the end of act 2 delighted me with how it played out, he's definitely in my head during act 3 because i thought he was glitching out on the last race of act 2 😭

Messing around with the archetypes is really fun. I jsut did a run with the style where you actually want to be on fire, because it makes your boosts way more effective. Cold also interesting because you can just ram jet all the time in it. There are ways to make the status effects work for you. Engineer is funny because you can damage yourself intentionally to go faster

Just an FYI Ace is not the highest difficulty. You unlock champion after beating the game.

The campaign doesnt rly have a story, I mean, it does. But the characters are so cringe I have to skip every conversation. Like, I couldnt give 2 shits about the story. Its meh.
The campaign is a roguelite, standard, go trough it or die and spend some upgrades and go again.
the gameplay is great though, its well fun, the driving is great. The music is great, graphics are great, the star wars sound effects are all there.
theres arcade too and challenges theyre all fun to play.
The multiplayer is well fun too! Theres quickraces and roguelite multiplayer campaigns where each have different upgrades etc!
In short: story is non existant and uninteresting. Gameplay is amazing, multiplayer is amazing.
Oh and before I forget theres a way to little content, it feels like youre racing the same 5 maps over and over. but thats my only real downside.

I thought it was written pretty well, especially for something which is intended to be a smaller scale light hearted story away from the larger Star Wars stories

Not sure if this applies to you, but if you have amazon prime then it’s free to play on amazon luna. maybe you can give it a shot there?
