I spent two days resetting Mewtwo, and when the shiny appeared, I lost it because I ran out of healing items. The next day I reset it again, and the shiny appeared, but I lost it because it critically hit Mewtwo. Now I'm on my third reset, but this time it's taking longer

I’ve been doing several simultaneous hunts to try and beat the bank closure, as I’m sure many of you have. To speed things up, I’ve been doing things like taking advantage of the Emerald duplication glitch, looking into RNG manipulation, and even built a little Arduino robot to soft reset for Celebi in Crystal VC.

To me, I consider a shiny I catch legitimate if it’s done without modifying the game in any way. However, there are some hunts for the GBA games that are appealing to me, but I never got those events back in the day, and I’ve been considering just unlocking them using a GBOperator. This got me thinking about what the community at large considers “legitimate” vs not. I understand it’s a pretty subjective topic, but I was just interested in what everyone’s opinions are.

I come to you for advice. Last year I shiny hunted Ho-Oh in HeartGold and managed to catch it in a matching Rapid Ball after only 210 SRs. I was super satisfied with that shiny. I instantly decided to hunt Lugia too and catch it in a Premier Ball to match colours as well.

After failing my first shiny Lugia at 2,241 resets because I refused to throw my Master Ball and it wouldn’t stay in a Premier Ball, I hunted Lugia for months until today, 10 months later at 12,260 resets, it shined again. I threw 47 Premier Balls and it escaped every single one of them, then I threw my Master Ball because I honestly do not want to hunt it again and I wanted it to be over already. However, it irks me because a shiny legendary in a Master Ball looks shady as hell. It looks exactly like the shiny Lugia I RNG’d in Emerald years ago. So it bothers me that it’s not in a Premier Ball.

How would you feel about editing its Pokeball with PKSM? On the one hand I’d feel guilty about editing a Pokemon illegally, as it would not feel entirely legitimate to me. But on the other hand seeing that Master Ball already leaves a bad taste in my mouth after such a long and exhausting hunt.

I am so glad I checked if not I would've missed it!!! It's been so long since i've gotten a shiny and this just made my day!!

Bonus: shiny larvesta I caught 10 minutes later

I've seen the recent posts about the impossible Treecko and Torchic VC shinies that seem to be mostly unobtainable now but did you know there was a time when you could get a 1:8 female ratio shiny Pokémon with the Gen 1 VC titles? These shinies are already completely lost to time.

Usually, these should be impossible because of how Gen 1/2 determines shininess. However, when Poké Transporter released for the Gen 1 VC, there was not only a bug on what determined shiny Pokémon, but the gender was also re-assigned with the correct gender ratio of that species when transferring it to Bank.

That means between 24 Jan 2017 and 5 Sep 2017 theoretically, you were be able to get the starters, fossils, eevee, and snorlax shiny if you hit the odds of 1:8,192 in game and then again 1:8 when transfering it. That's a combined total of 1:65,536!

Over the last two weeks I was busy developing a patch for Pokémon Bank to not only preserve the connectivity of Gen 6/7 games, but also to bring back this obscure fact in form of an Easter egg: https://github.com/devEnju/offline_bank

I'd love to hear on how you'd think to be able to hunt these Pokémon with the patch and hope you'll find the preservation as useful as I do.

Few weeks ago I posted about my first ever shiny that I encountered in the wild. This was all part of a journey I've been on to complete the national dex in each gen and move them on up, which suddenly had to get rushed due to Bank's impending closure. Well, I've finished that journey through Gen 7, and have been doing some wrap up on some things I want to get before I can't anymore.

And one of them was a shiny Poipole. I've never properly shiny hunted before so this was my first time. The legitimacy might be questioned a bit because I do prefer to play on emulators, but either way I really didn't expect to get it so quickly for something that you can't really reduce the odds on. I'm pretty happy with this little guy.

A much harder one I have ahead of me is the Japanese Emerald Mew, though. I've got a save in JP Emerald with the game beaten and waiting on Faraway Island. I've done a few runs without counting resets but since I already have the Poipole I might lock in on the Mew hunt next.

Side note, I have no plans to do every unhuntable-post-bank shiny. I certainly do not have the stones to chase after Wishmaker Jirachi or Rangers Manaphy lmao. The only ones on my list are Poipole, Mew, Alolan Rattata/Raticate, and maybe Type:Null

(Title says 1166(ish) cause there's maybe 100 or so I did before I started counting them.)

So I took like a 2 month break from shiny hunting my last 2 remaining team members in Pokemon X, I already had a ton of eevee eggs that I got before taking a break and after 14 and a half box full of eevees I finally hatched Pixie! But the even crazier part was when I started hatching eggs for noibat and got it in only FIVE eggs.

I've always said it... having a shiny appear in the Safari Zone is the best and worst feeling at the same time...

Absolute tragedy they shiny locked this, it's easily one of my absolute favourite shinies from Alola, but I can remove shiny locks so problem solved!

This was SUCH A STRESSFUL CAPTURE. tried to set up the infinite catch strategy to ensure a net ball, tricked it the leftovers, but the double team boosts meant my fling MISSED and leppa berry was sent to the void, so throwing it when it started struggling was not a guarantee save.... BUT IT WAS SO NICE AND STAYED AFTER 69 BALLS. Thank you Darkrai.

This hunt has been my white whale!! I was convinced I would go into 50k (I almost wanted to in a way for bragging rights lol).

In the time I found this green boi, I used a second switch and started a LeafGreen file and shiny hunted Bulbasaur. I got it after 6,604 resets (and over 10k on my GBA and 9k on my phone but that’s a different story haha)

These long hunts always make you think “am I going through resets too fast? Is my RNG messed up?” You also get worried that you might reset over it due to muscle memory! But you just gotta push through and remember that RNGesus giveth, and RNGesus taketh.

Anyways.. onto Squirtle!

So I decided to start another playthrough of Pokémon Crystal but with Kanto Mon. And I saw that Electabuzz was the best electric type option available. And only possible through an Elekid via the odd egg.

So I looked at the iv stats of the standard one and saw they were all 0. And the shiny ones were 10 for 3 of the 4 stats.

After seeing that, I was prepared to soft reset for hours upon hours just for a shiny Elekid. Until the game gifted one to me this soon. Yes I know the odd egg has increased chances but to get a shiny Elekid from it is 2%!

Honestly, I'm just glad I didn't get another Pidgey or Spearow.

I also reset my Pokémon Pearl save so I can hunt for a shiny Misdreavus in Eterna Forest with Cheryl.

The hunt for a shiny NidoranM is not gonna stop until I get the blue boy!

Also had an encounter with Suicune, but after one Ultra Ball, it ran.
