This is a long one, so buckle up. It's all true, nothing goes wrong, and to my knowledge everyone is safe. (The end of the story explains the 'to my knowledge' part.)
So, my company sent me down to Pensacola, Florida for disaster relief aid for hurricane Isaias. I was down there for a few days, but one day the long hours and not getting enough sleep had gotten to me. I dozed off while on my job site, and they terminated me and said they were sending me home. I didn't argue, I just clarified certain things, then left and drove to a gas station down the street.
I was upset that I had messed up, let my company down essentially, and have to leave, unable to continue helping the people affected. While at the gas station trying to get in touch with my superiors, a woman came up to me. She told me how she was down there with a friend of hers, and his company found out she was staying with him in a hotel, and they kicked her out. He didn't defend her, get her a room somewhere, just let her go, and that she had slept on the curb the night before.
Me being me I couldn't just let her stay there, soni asked where she wanted to go. She directed me to one of the beaches where another friend of hers should be, and we tried to get in touch with them. Unfortunately she dropped her phone while gathering her stuff when they kicked her out, and now it wasn't working. We could hear noises, but the screen didn't light up.
We sat on the beach for a few hours, meeting another man from Michigan, and trading stories for a few hours. When we couldn't figure out what to do, she told me to just leave her there, and she'd sleep on the beach.. again, me being me I couldn't accept that. So I asked where she was ultimately trying to get to.
She told me she was trying to get to a place which was only a few hours away from where I live. Last I heard from my bosses, I was to go home, and wasn't needed in Pensacola anymore. So I got to thinking.. and I took a HUGE risk that I would normally never take. Knowing she lived only a few hours from my house, I made the proposition.
I offered to drive her home myself, but my bosses couldn't know because I was driving a rental given to me by them. That we'd have to drive back to my home town, return the rental and pick up my truck. I made it clear that I expect nothing from her, and she was free to say no. But ultimately she said ok, and we got things prepared to leave Florida.
This is where it gets to be a little more than just helping a stranger, but not for anything weird or bad. While at the beach she had such a pure energy, simple and carefree, that radiated to me. It turned my bad morning around, and I wasn't worried about what my bosses would say about me getting kicked off location.
I then made a personal rule, while she was in my care, I would do my best to take care of her. I know the type of people out there, and absolutely know some of the things that could have happened to her if I just left her there. We finished up at the beach, got her things together, and headed to my hotel.
Not only was I taking a risk helping a complete stranger, but I was risking my job by bringing her with me in a company rental car. We got to my hotel, I parked around back, and asked her to stay at the truck so none of my coworkers would see her, then went inside, got my stuff and checked out. We left the hotel and I pulled over just down the road.
I asked her once again if she was ok with the situation, explained that my company couldn't know she was with me, but that I would take her home, and at any time she could tell me to stop and let her leave. She said she was fine, and we headed out, to me, she was then in my care, so I checked my bank balance, and we headed out.
We stop here and there for food, drinks or just to step out of the rental and have a cigarette. Because it's so late when we leave Florida, I eventually realize I can't keep driving. So I tell her we'll get a hotel when I have to return the rental car. We'd get some sleep, and then I'd continue to take her home the next morning.
I never suggested or even expected anything from her, I just took it personally that she was in my care, and did my best to make sure she was ok. Honestly, when booking the hotel I could have been a sleeze and booked a single bed for slightly cheaper, and tried to share a bed with her, but it didn't feel right, so we got to my main office, and we hurriedly unloaded her stuff, I returned the rental and got my personal vehicle. Then went back to the hotel I dropped her off at.
We both showered, then laid down and talked for a bit, before falling asleep. We woke the next morning, loaded my truck, and headed out for her home state. I'm being ambiguous for privacy reasons, but she didn't live in the same state as me, but from looking at maps, she wasn't too far from where I lived.
On the way to taking her back, I knew some of her interests, so I found a nice little river beach along the way. I didn't tell her, I just drove, and stopped at stores along the way to get things she liked, jerky, Baskin Robin's, mountain dew Baja blast. Nothing expensive, but something to let her know I had taking care of her in mind.
We spend a second day hanging out together, and having fun, before we arrive in her home town. With her phone being busted, she can't call people, she kept saying I could just drop her off at a state park, and she'd sleep there until her friend came home. But I couldn't accept that, if I couldn't leave her stranded in Florida, I wouldn't feel right just dumping her anywhere.
Finally we find someone she knows who let's her stay with them until the person she's renting from gets home the next day, and begrudgingly I leave her with them. I leave her my number, and ask that she calls or texts me when she gets her phone back working.. but I've not heard from her.
I never made any kind of move on her, I never even hinted that I expected something from her, I was absolutely respectful. But I haven't stopped thinking about her since I dropped her off at someone she knew's house.. blame it on my kind heart.. but I'm struggling because I want to know she's safe.
I did a good thing by taking her home, well outside of what most people would do. Especially while not taking advantage of her or the situation. Probably for most people they'd just forget about it, and say she was on her own once dropped off..
But I still wonder and worry, and unfortunately have no way to check up on her. I took a huge risk, and I don't regret it, I just wish there was a way I could know that she's ok..
