I’ve never owned a watch before and I am really excited for this model (SSB479), but I’m worried that the dome/bubble crystal looks bad. Is it super noticeable as opposed to being flat like most watches? Does it make it look too bulky or goofy?
From the internets, I read this watch was launched in collaboration with a BEAMS to celebrate the cultural icon movie character Torajiro Kuruma in the Japanese movie series "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" ("It's Tough Being a Man"), as Tora-San wore the original 62MAS throughout the film series.
That Dolphin on the back is pretty funny, to me! ~L~ Sacrilegious really! I can imagine many past Seiko designers spinning in their chairs!! *L*
I guess I was so thrilled with my 2017 Titanium SARX055 I never noticed Seiko brought out a Stainless Steel version in 2018 at twice the price, but admittedly with a few 'upgrades'.
Meet the 2018 Seiko SJE073J1/SARA015 in Stainless Steel. Is it an homage to the 2017 SARX055?? That was fast! Hahaha! ^L^ After all it is basically a Stainless Steel clone of the Titanium SARX055 in looks, but it does have several changes to justify its higher price.
Reading the reviews online the significant changes include:
• Front loaded! Thinner, 2-piece bezel, display back still removable.
• New 6L35 movement! Slightly thinner with longer 45hr power reserve.
• Instant Date Change at Midnight. (Spec is ±5 min of 12, good luck!)
• Watch is only 9.8 thick! 1.2mm thinner than SARX055.
• Second hand is thermally blued, not painted like the SARX055.
• Lower dial text is now blue! SARX055 lower text is black.
Note: I keep reading how the dial texture is like the GS "Snowflake", but it is not! The dial has the same "washi" papertexture as the SARX055.
Other than the noted changes, it shares a lot with the SARX055, a good thing!
• Like the wonderfully detailed and polished hour markers and hands. The way they catch any ambient light makes both watches easy to read in anything but complete darkness, no lume needed.
• The dial texture makes a great contrast wth the polished main hands so it is never hard to pick up the hand's location at a glance. And of course the blue second hand is easy to see and differentiate from the main hands. Very easy to see the time at a glance.
• The Zaratsu finishing looks superb and bracelet half-links allow good fitting.
• The DiaShield surface hardening has kept my watch looking great, I'm sure it will work on the stainless steel, maybe better!
So, if you don't appreciate the lightness of the Titanium SARX055, or are looking for an even thiner version with some unusual features like the front loading movement and blue dial text, you have the SJE073J1/SARA015 as a wonderful option! If I ever get one to complement my SARX055, I'm going to call it the "Stunt Double"! *L* Bwahahaha, I like that! It's my new watch nickname the "Stunt Double"!

My question is specifically for users in Canada and the U.S. I’m assuming that most users here are from that region, so I’m just posting it here.
A quick bit of background on my question:
I have a Seiko 5 that’s now 13 years old. It’s still running pretty well (about -5 seconds per day), but at some point in the next few years, I’ll have to figure out how to keep it going. Here in Germany, we’re facing a general shortage of watchmakers. There are simply fewer and fewer of them. And even fewer of those are actually skilled. And of those few skilled watchmakers, many won’t touch Japanese watches—neither Seiko nor Citizen. For them, it’s all about the Swiss brands, and they’re obviously quite busy with those as well. That’s why I now only have three watches left: the Seiko, a Citizen Promaster, and a watch with a Sellita movement. My most recent purchases (and probably my very last ones) were Eco-Drive watches, which will almost certainly run for 20 years without needing a watchmaker.
Especially here in the Seiko thread, you often read about American users who can send their Seikos in for service without any problems. Without being turned away by watchmakers, regardless of the age or value of the watches. And this really interests me a lot 🔥:
IS IT REALLY STILL THAT EASY FOR YOU TO FIND A GOOD INDEPENDENT WATCHMAKER EVEN FOR MORE AFFORDABLE WATCHES? 🤔
You market the prospex divers as these rough and tough “Go anywhere do anything” watches but you are hardly the picture of toughness while your watch could not even survive even daily wear and tear. The 4R35 movement ran 5 minutes ahead in 7 hours and even started stopping. Shame on you Seiko! It is a well fact that you have non existing QC and now I know for a fact you have possess zero engineering skills as well. I will enjoy your inevitable bankruptcy.
Bought my first GS during our trip to Japan at Watch Ginza Sacomdo. Loved the Japanese day symbol as I felt it would remind me of this trip everytime I wear it. Said it was a 2015
just chopped off the cyclops to get the unobstructed view of that dial
did the same for the king samurai
only works on sapphire crystals with this method
will need to use heat for models like the Monster and Turtle
I'm casually looking around for the SPB505, and thought I'd check Chrono24 in case anyone was selling a gently used one. But all the prices are *above* what you can buy brand new in the US at retail. Is there some kind of strategy for that pricing that I'm missing?
Guys, hi everyone, I wonder how does this beauty look after harsh conditions. Maybe some previous versions after years of wearing. What do scratches on a black bezel look like? I’m really impressed by the white version, but the mint one is also appealing
