Way too many idiots feed the wildlife at Rainer. I was there a few weeks ago and so many chipmonks and squirrels ran right up to me wanting food.

19

u/NoKangaroo6906 Aug 21 '26

I got yelled out by a mother because she was trying to let her daughter feed a chipmunk and I was coming around the corner and purposely scared the chipmunk away and told her it is illegal to feed wildlife

u/gehnrahl Eat a bag of Dicks Aug 20 '26

I spend a lot of time at Rainier. The chinese and indian tourists are the fucking worst about this. Coming back from a hike at Mowich I bitched out an indian family feeding the deer bread.

8

u/meow_mixology Aug 20 '26

A lot of times they take your food without you being a willing participant unfortunately

16

u/vitamin_r Aug 20 '26

Sure sometimes they are opportunists. But they have been coaxed and conditioned into doing that more because of our stupidity. Not just deliberate feeding but poor stewardship of campsites due to, you guessed it, stupidity.

I was at Panorama Point a couple weeks ago. A little marmot came right up to me and tried to eat my boot. I never even thought to put my hands anywhere near those big sharp pointy teeth.

4

u/meergreister Aug 20 '26

Pointy? Was this marmot a vampire?

2

u/Mumblix_Grumph Aug 20 '26

Aren't they all?

68

u/Better_March5308 šŸ‘» Aug 20 '26

Nice marmot.

49

u/JSlngal69 Blaine Aug 20 '26

let's not forget, Dude - that keeping wildlife, an amphibious rodent, for uh, domestic, you know, within the city - that aint legal either

25

u/AGlassOfMilk Eat a bag of Dicks Aug 20 '26

Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man.

15

u/my_lucid_nightmare Capitol Hill Aug 20 '26

What are you, a fucking park ranger now?

3

u/JSlngal69 Blaine Aug 20 '26

Who gives a shit about the fucking marmot!

10

u/PineappleFit317 Aug 20 '26

I love that movie, but there are two things that bother me: that is a ferret, and the dog Walter is watching is not a Pomeranian.

9

u/Darkarchon567 Aug 20 '26

My impression has always been that that is, in fact, the joke in both instances.

6

u/DEATHbyBOOGABOOGA Aug 20 '26

You are correct.

3

u/finger_my_earhole Aug 20 '26

This agression will not stand.

0

u/Substantial_Disk1706 Arlington Aug 21 '26

That’s a ferret, but I get your jist lol

3

u/Cynics_Anonymous Aug 21 '26

Clearly you’re not a golfer if you think that’s a ferret

277

u/laurak8te Aug 20 '26

He was such a jerk in the comments in his original video. Didn’t want to admit fault.

78

u/covidlung Aug 20 '26

Well sometimes people come around.

68

u/SpicyDirtTheGhost Twin Peaks Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 20 '26

Yeah $230 fine and public shaming later really can make someone come around

20

u/TheBloodyNinety Aug 20 '26

The only thing he ā€œcame aroundā€ on was the realization if he posted this video he’d get more likes.

26

u/laurak8te Aug 20 '26

After hundreds of comments, yes he did. He replied to many of them with an attitude.

12

u/ChaosRainbow23 Aug 20 '26

To be fair, an adorable creature ran up to him being nice. He pet it, not knowing the laws.

I don't think he didn't anything wrong at all.

If not friend, why friend shaped?

0

u/cmonster127 Aug 20 '26

Ignorance of rules doesn't mean they don't apply. There is a significant amount of information the park provides on regulations and the reasons behind them. Interacting with wildlife (feeding, petting, etc) habituates animals to humans and puts them in far more dangerous situations.

21

u/flightwatcher45 Aug 20 '26

Yep, sometimes reddit acts like you can't change. He learned a few lessons, good for him, move along.

7

u/laurak8te Aug 20 '26

It’s hard to say that when there were hundreds of people telling him it was wrong and he would NOT accept it.

5

u/flightwatcher45 Aug 20 '26

Haha I was young and stubborn once, I came relate.

3

u/jebarson_j Aug 20 '26

Yup the shame of getting caught often does that.

7

u/blazedancer1997 Aug 20 '26

Dang I was seconds away from typing a comment about him taking it on the chin

3

u/bransiladams Aug 20 '26

That’s what ā€œlearning your lessonā€ is

0

u/degenkris Aug 21 '26

ā€œAdmit faultā€ for peacefully interacting with wildlife. What a sad loser you are.

2

u/laurak8te Aug 21 '26

Read the rules.

0

u/degenkris Aug 21 '26

A sad loser and a bootlicker, nice combo.

2

u/laurak8te Aug 21 '26

Someone doesn’t like rules šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

0

u/degenkris Aug 21 '26

I don’t like when rules are used to punish people who did absolutely no harm, everyone understands not touching wildlife is a rule to protect them but punishing someone for a small pet to an animal that ran up to them first is crazy and being the person to defend that lunacy bcs ā€œMuh Rulezā€ is just pathetic.

2

u/laurak8te Aug 21 '26

Sure bud, keep being angry that you can’t understand why people are mad. You’ll figure it out someday.

0

u/degenkris Aug 21 '26

Yeah one day I’ll figure out why petting an animal that ran up to you is something be up in arms about. Again, what a sad loser you are.

2

u/laurak8te Aug 21 '26

It’s like there’s a reason why! As you said! Sorry, can you not read? I guess that makes sense, given you’re still here…

2

u/degenkris Aug 21 '26

Oh wow, you are really a full authoritarian boot licker. Hope you discover critical thinking someday.

I had a marmot steal my golf ball once when I was a kid - just like Caddyshack!

I was disappointed when he didn't do the little dance after though.

42

u/EdgarAllenPoe2205 Aug 20 '26

Hiking all the Rainier trail systems was so much better in the 1990's & 2000's before all the douchebags arrived and made it their online identity. Now, you go up there, and 1/2 the people are walking around aimlessly trying to get the best picture or video for their Instagram. They don't even care about the area or keeping the trails nice and clean.

-13

u/CloudCityCitizen Aug 20 '26

You mean the Chinese tourists

13

u/KG7DHL Issaquah Aug 20 '26

You should visit Yosemite....

8

u/TheRealRacketear Broadmoor Aug 20 '26

Or The Redwoods.

They goto REI and gear up for nature walks.

4

u/CloudCityCitizen Aug 20 '26

Yes, and not always but usually they're the ones I see trampling meadows off trail, feeding animals, or bypassing roped off hot spring areas at parks. Shit some of them even bring their little ass dogs in National Parks on trails.

-11

u/ChaseballBat Sasquatch Aug 20 '26

Go forbid people go outside and do something. Conflating two types of people to justify your hatred.

2

u/raphtze Aug 20 '26

it ain't my cup of tea...but more people outside is a good thing. too often people gate keep things. although i do agree sometimes too much of a good thing can be bad. yosemite is a prime example.

still, different levels of abilities for everyone. i have younger kids and we love to walk around the valley in yosemite :)

-1

u/Timely-Mind7244 Aug 20 '26

I dont think he knew it was illegal before posting it.... unless he wanted to create the video to help "inform others" but that's really stretching.... if i had no idea a cute, harmless looking animal approached me, I would sure as shit hope I was getting filmed and then post on my story, I did the same for a cool piece of art, or kitten I am fostering. I understand its a wild animal, but I grew up with letting ppl have natural consequences when messing 28th wildlife, he took the risk.

I dont think we should feed them bc that makes them less independent, but we do that for our college aged kids, soooooo

7

u/GarnetandBlack Aug 20 '26

I assume there are a fucking ton of signs about this, because yeah it's gonna be instinct on my part to reach down and pet it a bit (thats what she said).

Particularly because if a wild animal latches onto me I'm gonna want to make the separation a calm, no sudden movements, kind of thing.

59

u/sam_42_42 Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 20 '26

The insufferable generation. Can't even see that the problem was him and his karma farming. He can't think beyond that.

[edit]

Editing here because my comment has generated a lot of controversy.
...

I don't have an issue with the fact that a marmot approached him. I don't have an issue with him recording a video of it. I have an issue with his instinct to immediately share it on social media, with no thought given to the social consequences of encouraging others to behave similarly, nor to the fact that he is publicly documenting illegal behavior for the world to see.

Then he turns around and tries to profit from the persecution and pretend he is the victim here.

So yes. Insufferable.

[/edit]

24

u/Energy_Turtle Aug 20 '26

No one should make mistakes, accept the consequences, and then educate others on what they did wrong. Totally insufferable behavior.

18

u/JuniorDoughnut3056 Aug 20 '26

Hes literally admitting to be wrongĀ

22

u/Angels242Animals Aug 20 '26

If you read his original comments in that thread between he and the Ranger, he was trying to deny any wrongdoing whatsoever. He’s a piece of shit who is just karma farming.

26

u/JuniorDoughnut3056 Aug 20 '26

An animal came up to him, climbed on his leg, and he pet it. It's a natural reaction a lot of people would have. Calling this intentional interference is a stretch. He didn't seek it out or do something to entice it over. He made a mistake and now he's posting a video explaining to that sameĀ  audience what he did was a mistake and the consequences for it. Now you wanna bash him for trying to correct it? Jesus, bro, chill tf outĀ

12

u/blogito_ergo_sum Aug 20 '26

An animal came up to him, climbed on his leg, and he pet it. It's a natural reaction a lot of people would have.

Unserious conspiracy theory: clearly the park rangers are training the marmots to come up to hapless tourists for pets, so that they can write fines

4

u/JuniorDoughnut3056 Aug 20 '26

They legitimately could if they wanted to. The animals in the parks are damn smart. Was up in the goat rocks the other week and a squirrel figured out how to unzip my tent when I had my back turned cooking breakfast. Came back over to see him doing laps around the inside and freaking out because he saw me coming. Was nice being the only person up at the lake willing to brave an over night in the smoke, but it also made me target numero uno for those criminals.Ā

Ok boomer.

This is literally every old person talking about young people, ever.

1

u/sam_42_42 Aug 20 '26

Gen X actually. And yeah, it is.

3

u/AdProud5950 Aug 23 '26

It’s always Gen X lmfao. Why are you guys obsessed with us? Like you weren’t young and dumb? Imagine you had every idiotic thing you did posted online. That’s what makes this generation seem so much worse. You just never saw the disgusting things your peers were doing. Yes there’s problems with us but when you generalize like that it just makes it seem like you think you’re superior or something, when I know you were causing bullshit in your teen years

3

u/Turbulent-Flight7625 Aug 20 '26

I will not pet the cute fuzzy things that come up and act friendly. Thanks for the advice 😊

3

u/MyLastSigh Aug 20 '26

I had a MtRainier chipmunk come out of nowhere to grab a snack out of my hand. Glad I didn't make a video of it.

3

u/SubductionZone1 Aug 20 '26

Almost 50 years ago on the side of a mountain in Colorado I was sitting next to a TA in a field geology class. It was a very steep slope, and our butts were on the ground and our feet downhill were holding us up with our legs at almost the same angle you would get from sitting on a chair. All of a sudden, a marmot was waddling downhill between the two of us. But that was not good enough. He took a right turn and went under the legs of the TA that was sitting next to me.

We didn't pet the guy; we were too surprised to react. This was in an area where people were very rare, and the marmot was not begging. He just did not see us as predators.

3

u/Consistent_Equal6720 Aug 20 '26

5

Didn't see anything earlier from this guy so glad he revisited the situation with this "mea culpa".

To be honest, I think the marmot is a little bit culpable here, too, lol! Damn those little pudgy dudes are cute, lol! OP, thanks for the PSA.

5

u/AncientNectarine5352 Aug 20 '26

To be fair, it literally took days of arguing with people and being publicly shamed for him to do so. The guy is extremely egotistical.

2

2

2

u/gehnrahl Eat a bag of Dicks Aug 20 '26

I think the marmot is a little bit culpable here

Its been habituated by people like him. At best a non habituated wild animal will ignore you and go about their day.

1

u/SeattleHasDied Aug 20 '26

You are, unfortunately correct, but I hope you didn't miss the intended humor.

1

u/gehnrahl Eat a bag of Dicks Aug 20 '26

I got it, but I really fucking hate normies ruining nature. Like, I do get irrationally angry at the carelessness of people and how our frankly limited "wild" places are treated.

1

u/SeattleHasDied Aug 20 '26

When I worked in Yosemite, a big problem was trying to stop the tourists from luring the wildlife (bears were the bigger issue) with junk food and candy in order to get a photograph. We tried to explain the obvious (Doritos and Twinkies are NOT bear food), but then added that they were, in effect, killing that bear. We'd ask them if they noticed the plastic ear tag the bear might be wearing, then we explained what the different colors meant. I believe bears got two relocations, but if they insisted on returning to the all-you-can-eat Doritos buffet a third time, they were "dead bear walking", as indicated by the color ot ear tag. And they still didn't give a shit. It was a great source of satisfaction to see the park rangers hand out tickets for this, but it still sucks bears died. (Also hard to be mad at Herschel for the salmon issue, lol!).

That being said, whatever assholiness OP exhibited earlier, I'm glad he read the room and did the right thing.

2

u/gehnrahl Eat a bag of Dicks Aug 20 '26

Its getting to be a huge problem in the North Cascades. The bears are getting habituated because trash hikers aren't storing their food appropriately. Got charged by a bear along the rainbow loop. Camp sites full of food litter. Emailed their bear expert and their like....yeah its been happening more and more

1

u/OppressedCactus Aug 20 '26

Right? I know it's wrong to pet them (and why) but if not friend why friend shaped yadda yadda.

2

u/Particular_Week_2754 Aug 20 '26

Wait, the said it’s misdemeanor punishable by 5k fine and jail time. 230 is nothing, he is very lucky.

2

u/meergreister Aug 20 '26

Seems excessive. I used to work for the park service and making an example out of someone for something like this doesn’t look great IMO especially when people do far far worse.

2

u/BicameralTheory West Seattle Aug 20 '26

Downvote the fuck out of me but I’d pay $230 to pet and get hugged by a marmot on Ranier.

don’t touch wildlife or they get used to other people. Yosemite absolutely ruined with this same mindset now squirrels follow you and harass others for food, then end up biting

Gotta love Seattle, won’t arrest people for random assaults even on women and will let violent rpists and literal murderers out but god forbid you pet some wildlife for a couple seconds. Just remember in Seattle you are more welcome to rob, murder, and harass or even assault people than you are to peacefully enjoy wildlife.

Expensive petting zoo, that goes towards helping the local rangers take care of a vast stretch of wilderness and wildlife?..Worth it…

-6

u/ReasonableGas8904 Aug 20 '26

Fuck Washington!

4

u/slabsquathrust Aug 20 '26

National Park rangers are commissioned federal law enforcement officers...

3

u/CoronaBud Aug 20 '26

Well that seems a bit extreme. Dude broke the law and paid his fines, and there are laws like these all over the nation meant to protect wildlife AND people. If he wouldn't have touched it and it still came up to him and got on his leg he would have been okay and paid no fine, and there are plenty of reasons behind why people shouldn't be touching random wildlife, for both the animals and for people.

-5

u/SeaChange1356 Aug 20 '26
