Such venues seem so unpleasant as far as their locations – far from the cities, and with mainly dull, flat, treeless, parking-lot surroundings.
The FIFA finals will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Seattle would have been a far superior venue due to its in-town location.
I’ll give Philadelphia credit here too. There stadium is just south of downtown and walking distance to several cool areas.
(I’m a Seahawks fan that lived in Philly for several years. I’ve also been to the Jets/Giants stadium which is basically just surrounded by parking lots).
But wait, I've been told on here that Seattle is a chithole, overrun by drug addicts and homeless. The city looks like Dresden after WW2. That's it's full of trash and basically unlivable....This article must be fake news.
I do have thoughts on that. It appears the city cleaned up that area for the occasion (my brother went to a game and said that). If you don’t think Seattle has those problems to an unhealthy degree, I respectfully disagree.
Every city has those issues, Seattle is no different. Is it perfect, no. But it's nothing like how conservatives describe it. There's some conservatives that are so blinded by the misinformation that they are afraid to go into cities like Seattle. Hell, the Peirce county sherif told everyone that Seattle is unsafe. He sure was wrong about that, as hundreds of thousands stream through the city, having the times of their lives. edit-I'm glad your brother made it out alive, must have been a harrowing experience.
My friends brother from the midwest came out here with his wife for a conference and was so psyched to see the clownfiesta that is the McStabbys. He was honestly pretty disappointed.
Very few actually live in Seattle, a lot of foreign bots and folks from other states chiming in on this sub. There's a handful, and you can tell when they can reference a landmark or street. The others just talk in general terms about how it's a chuthole and unlivable, clearly indicating they haven't been in the city anytime in the last 5-10 years if ever.
I’m here everyday for work and live just north of City limits. I believe that people’s description of how dystopian this awesome city is to prevent anyone else from wanting to come here. People don’t want to share. Everyone I’ve come into contact with that’s here for the tournament is madly in love with Seattle.
I left for 20 years working for airline industry all over America, now I’m back I’m never leaving again.
Yeah I was born at UW, grew up in SODO and Ballard. Came back and moved to Shoreline because of the costs.
Living other places had me realizing that what ever we pay is well worth it for such a magical place. Most cities I’ve lived have the exact same problems, but without the awesomeness.
No one? Bullshit. I still love Seattle. My heart has been broken by many of the changes, and I’m full of fury about some of the things that happened. But I still love Seattle.
Uhhh what? Not propaganda. It’s quite routine to have to cross the street because of a naked person yelling something violent and swinging a weapon. And honestly I’m a bit shocked how clean some other cities are. Literally NYC seems clean compared to the west coast cities.
Pioneer Square? If by rough you mean it has tourist attractions, that cool indoor mini golf place, nightclubs & concert venues, coffee shops, restaurants, and a really nice toy store then sure, that's super rough. Sure, it's on the rail line for Sounder and Amtrak so you get some noise.
Seattle times click bait.
No owner is replacing Lumen anytime soon. Aside from the rabid fans, It's a huge calling card. The national media loves coming to Lumen for Seahawk games. Any new owner is going to look at what that stadium does for the team.
I think it depends on your definition of "replace." I could see a total renovation of Lumen Field at its current location and the Seahawks playing at UW for a season or two for the construction. I agree I don't see them moving to Kent or Everett or anywhere because the current location is so central to the region and transit friendly. The truth is Lumen Field is old by NFL standards.
Definitely renovations will occur. The way they overhauled the Hawksnest could be a template.
Address 1-5% areas every offseason for a few years rather than shutting down for a full season.
I was in a box for a Storm game last year. It was clearly starting to show wear and tear.
It's mostly cosmetics and fitments that will need overhaul in the building. That stuff can be staged offsite and installed offseason.
It's a gem of a site. No new owner will want to leave it.
That's flat out wrong. There are 15 stadiums in the NFL older than Lumen (Bills have a new stadium). And then how many of those teams that play in one of the 15 older stadiums are looking to replace/renovate in the near future? That Seattle Times article is correct that a new Seahawks owner is going to want major renovations of Lumen in the near future. That's the point of the article.
Look down I-5 at Portland. Moda Center is 30 years and new Blazer owner is talking about major renovations or he'll move the team.
agree are only 7 stadiums older than lumen that are not currently being replaced. soldier field literally dies not count as old it's just as new as lumen
the team is going to lose value so the joke is on them. why not just move the Seahawks to Yakima the land will be cheap! oh wait Yakima makes mcstabbies look safe
It didn’t show the skyline or any other noticeable and loveable parts of Seattle but just the shots that showed bright crystalline blue skies with hardly a cloud as they pulled back to show the stands facing the Crows Nest - man it’s the best time to be in Seattle.
It’s been a while since June-uary has been a thing - we got that last year a bit, and we’re in for some rainy weather for a bit ahead, but sunny weather over the last 5 plus years is starting and staying more consistent in late March/April than it ever was before.
Bad in that the underlying reason is global warming. But I am not going to lie, I enjoy more sunny days we seem to be having in the recent past.
"Like many people, I’d arrived on the eve of the game and wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. But Seattle seems wonderfully relaxed about everything. They opened the bars at 7am and by 10.45 on the morning of the game, Occidental and King and the other streets running down from Pioneer Square were transformed into a berserk carnival of happy Aussies and American fans wandering past anti-Ice, anti-Trump, pro-Workers and anti-Cuba- blockade protesters."
The last sentence sounds so Seattle, although to be fair you would probably get the same thing in Portland.... and then some. 😄
Obviously the issue is that the training facility is in Atlanta and players are traveling in from europe. That will probably cause Seattle to continue to get less games than they ideally would.
Especially after the whole World Cup run takes place on the west coast, I don’t expect the team to come back out west for a year or so for any friendlies
Yep, location plus field will always limit us. We have gotten Copa and Gold Cup matches, so I think we are in a strong position for regular tournaments. Tougher for one off friendlies and qualifiers.
Not only the travel for the players from Europe, but all our WCQ'a are on Central America and the Caribbean, and Atlanta is a good hub for that aspect. Close to Europe, close to where we tend to travel to the most. The team has been training in SoCal after the Germany game because they knew their games were on the west coast.
9.5 hours. Atlanta is pretty far south and Seattle far north, ends up erasing most of the difference in longitude (since planes fly to/from Europe on an arc).
Yes, my understanding is with the way things went in group stage, if the US wins in the round of 32, they play in Seattle July 6th for the round of 16.
Adding onto the others, that round of 16 will have the opponent be the winner of Seattle’s round of 32 match. Currently neither team there is determined, but it’s 1st place group G (Egypt, Iran, Belgium, New Zealand) vs a 3rd place from a different group. Egypt is currently leading but that could change.
I love my city and its people! Please don’t tell all our secrets! It’s a beautiful place to live. We don’t need them coming here and ruining our great vibes!😘😸❤️
Most nations have a "national stadium", a home base for their national team games. In England, it's Wembley in London. Mexico it's Azteca, in Mexico City. We do it different here in the US. We play our home games all across the country. We just finally opened a national training center, outside Atlanta. A lot of folks are learning about soccer in the US and discovering that Seattle has one of the biggest soccer fanbases in the country. The two big drawbacks to Seattle not hosting more USMNT/USWNT games is that Lumen has field turf and Seattle is about as far away from anywhere else as it gets in the lower 48.
I bet all these commentators praising the venue are the same people who were protesting about the stadiums being built. As I recall there were tons of critics who apposed the stadiums. Lots of “we shouldn’t spend money on Sports Ball” rhetoric
