Discussion PabloMK7, co-owner and co-developer of Azahar, wants Retroid and Anbernic to stop using Azahar in their promotional videos

In a Twitter thread, PabloMK7 expressed their concern that the 3DS emulation scene is at risk due to the possible legal ramifications that companies like Retroid (and specifically in this case, Anbernic) are seemingly inviting as they start to blatantly copy 3DS design details in their newest hardware releases - citing how Yuzu was shut down due to the sudden boost in attention it received prior to receiving legal pressure.

While those Chinese companies will likely be fine in such a case, PabloMK7 believes that 3DS emulator developers such as themselves will be affected in the crossfire.

In response to their initial Twitter post, multiple Twitter users called PabloMK7 a "poser" and made fun of them for even worrying about this, with one user telling PabloMK7 that they should continue to "do your stuff for free and expect nothing in return".

It’s one of my favorite devices. The screen is gorgeous and the colorways are fun.
Lucky for my wallet that I already have the PKM Yellow model and I don’t want the 6 buttons variants and I wasn’t fast enough to buy the other 4 buttons colorways, if not I would have bought another one.

Showcase Retroid Pocket Nova is so versatile

It's been a while since I owned a Retroid Pocket Nova. I wanted to showcase how I use it.

Picture 1 - Hotel Dusk DS using Dual Screen add on.

Picture 2 - Left 4 Dead 2 using Gamenative. Dual Stick shooters work well with the official grip. Quite a few PC games support 4:3

Picture 3 - Pokemon Black DS using it in a vertical orientation. Right stick is set up as D Pad controls. Can easily play with one hand woth access to touch ibputs. This allows pocketability for DS games (in my opinion Nova is more pocktable than both Duo and Thor without the attachment due to how thin it is as well as weighing around 100g less).

Picture 4 - Skate 3 Android Port. Many official and unofficial Android ports are getting released. Many of these support 4:3 including Call of Duty, Fez, Dead Cells, Twilight Princess, Simpsons Hit and Run, Dave the Diver, Subnautica, Geometry Wars 3, Dredge, Bully, Ball X Pitt and etc.

Picture 5 - ESDE Front End. I have set it up where vidoes play instantly with a box art. Its like browsing a museum. Nova is simply the best for older retro emulatuon due to 4:3, and the native landscape 12phz OLED panel has the lowest input lag.

Picture 6 - Sonic All Stars Racing on Gamenative. I found some games that support 4:3 dont work with 960p resolution. If that is the case you have to change the resolution to 720p which resolved it for this game.

Picture 7 - Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow DS. For DS games that use the 2nd screen as a map I find using MelonDS with 2nd screen at 2x with transparency is perfect. Nova screen is perfect for full screen DS games because its perfect integar scaling for scrap 2D pixels.

Picture 8 - Chrono Trigger DS using Dual Screen add on and grip. For long play sessions at home I find the grip and Dual Screen add on more comfortable than actual clamshells. The reason is clamshells tend to have a boxy design with sharp corners.

Picture 9 - 007 Everthing or Nothing Gamecube. Nany dont know that GameCube originally was design with stereo 3D in mind. Dolphin supports Stereo 3D natively. Because if this around 50 percent of games work with stereo 3D perfectly with no visual bugs. Even the menus pop out in 3D. I use my Rokid Max XR Glasses to get a perfect full Side By Side 3D effect. By default Android only supports half resolution side by side for Dolphin. I managed to resolve this by installing Shizuku and Second Screen and display in full resolution side by side for glorious high resolution Stereo 3D graphics. Of course for Azahar by default it support full resolution side by side 3D.

This is literally Godsend. Just a week back I learned about the better Wind Waker Patch for the gamecube which would let me run the game in widescreen. And yesterday I tested the Wind Waker HD android port (followed all the instructions line by line through their github) and it is working phenomenally. This would be my preferred way to complete this game now. Damn. And after this, Dusklight for Twilight Princess oh baby lessgoooooo The age of pc ports is upon us and I am not complaining 🤤

Discussion Hot Take: You can buy however many handhelds you want, but people can also criticize you for it

If you're confused about the title, this post is the counterargument for this post. I read it and saw how it misrepresents a bunch of arguments people have against overconsumption (of handhelds) and decided to make this post. I chose to post instead of replying because I have replied with my arguments in the comments multiple times before and none of those arguments were mentioned in the linked post. Responding to posts does apparently not get the exposure you'd want.

Let me start this off with a simple clarification: nothing about this discussion and nobody talking about it can tell you what you can or cannot do. It's always your choice. That being said, that freedom also means that others can comment. If you don't want people's opinion about you or your habits, don't post online. Your personal choice is something that only pertains to you when it comes to personal impact. Only you can judge how much this impacts you. But certain choices have consequences beyond your personal life. And since the linked post doesn't mention it, I will spend some time on it.

Wasteful spending isn't necessarily about money

The main argument I hear is that you should be able to spend your money however you want, which is true. But wasteful spending is not just about pissing your savings away, it's also about wasting resources on something that isn't going to be utilized properly. A handheld is a device with utility. If you buy a brand new one and it gathers dust after a few plays, their utility is not being utilized. Especially when the battery dies and the manufacturer won't send you a replacement. Now you have a tech brick.

These devices are made from non-renewable resources, some of them are in high demand (we all know that prices are shooting up) and they're shipped from china by plane. Cargo planes are 47 times more polluting than cargo ships, so any device you buy direct from a manufacturer in China is going to have a bigger environmental impact than one you buy locally. Sadly, retro handhelds you would buy locally are most likely also shipped by plane, unless you find them in big box stores.

Overconsumption results in overpollution and yes, other hobbies and collections are much more wasteful than this one, but that doesn't mean that it's now okay to do. The big risk with this hobby is that products are so cheap. One expensive watch can net you dozens of handhelds, but that also means dozens of plane rides. Dozens of chipsets, screens, plastics. Someone buying a $10.000 watch is being less destructive than someone spending $10.000 on handhelds. Be aware of your environmental impact.

Tinkering and trying out devices is fine, but you don't have to keep them all

I like to tinker. I fully understand when people see a new device and want to play with it. I think that I have bought about 1.5 devices every year for the last 6 years. I still own 3 though. Times change, the market evolves and a new devices might do what you want better than the one you currently have. That's all understandable. But if you buy a new one, please consider selling your old one. The biggest waste comes from devices being unused and from the international shipping. If you can ship it locally to a new owner, that means that there is one less new device needed. That keeps waste to a minimum and makes you more conscious about your spending.

Not every collection is created equal, even within the same space

Disclaimer: This is not a personal opinion of mine. I am generally against collections, but understand that is a personal thing. This is more of an analysis of why people judge one collection and don't judge another.

Why do we collect? There are many reasons of course, but the most highly regarded reasons seem to be about hunting down rare or well regarded items and capturing a certain era of items you collect. That's why buying a new attainable product is not seen as collecting, but as consuming. To show you the difference, I have a few examples:

  • Car collecting: Buying classic cars is about preserving and appreciating history. People find it weird if you buy all models of the new Honda Civic. Exotic cars are about rarity and prestige.
  • Stamp collecting: It's about the hunt for rare stamps, people are confused if you show off a book full of freshly bought stamps.
  • Watch collecting: People look for unique or timeless pieces. Buying an expensive watch is something you do for big events and the watches you keep for life (and they keep working). If you show those people all the Casios you have collected they won't value that. They generally like Casios, but see no value in a collection.
  • Model trains: Part of the value is in their detail. They are meant to be displayed. If you have a bunch of cheap sets, no model trian enthusiast is going to be interested.
  • Handhelds: Preserving the past has value to people. That's why people generally admire a handheld collection of well preserved original consoles. Adding a bunch cheap emulators to your cart and buying them brand new has nothing to do with preservation. That being said. The emulation scene is old enough that there are rare retro handhelds now that will disappear if they are not preserved. Handhelds that mark a signicant time/change in the growth of this scene. The criteria are shifting.

Resumé and transparency

Do what you want with your money. If you don't want to see any critique, don't engage with a public platform. Want to be more conscious about your spending? Think about the environmental impact of your choices, but don't let that stop you from buying anything at all. Just be mindful about your consumption. That goes further than just handhelds, but this is an SBC sub. Enjoy what you have! Give yourself the time to appreciate what you own before you look for something new.

And to be fully transparent and to show I don't come from a 'holier than thou' perspective. Abstaining from any fun is not why we're on this earth. We're supposed to enjoy ourselves, but our enjoynment should not come from the destruction of this planet. This is how I make choices:

  • I like trying out new things. But when a new device drops I investigate first if that device truly is what I want or that it's close enough. I skipped the 477m for example because I knew it would be a matter of time something like the Nova would come along and that would be my first pick. I also bought an RG DS when Rocknix released, but sold it when I found out that it wasn't what I was looking for. Now that GammaOS Nano is really good I bought an RG DS+ and have been enjoying it.
  • Certain things I value deeply can have a negative impact. For example, I like cooking. I like meat. Meat has been a significant part of our diet, at least where I'm from. I like making traditional dishes, which almost always contain meat. But the meat industry is a major worldwide pollutor and their pollution has noticeable local impact in my area. I'm not going to stop eating meat, but I have been eating more and more vegetarian dishes. I still eat meat, but when I do I make sure it's worth it. I prepare it in a way where the meat really shines and is not just a slab of protein. It actually connects me more to the product and its value.
  • Any collection should have more value to me than just displaying. If I don't use it, I sell it or give it away. This is highly personal of course.

Long text I know. Part of the reason why I didn't to put it in a comment. If people were wondering, I didn't use AI. I work in communications, so writing bigger texts might not be as taxing to me as it is to others.

Community Resources PlayTranslate v3.4.1 released! Translations and language learning with games, VNs, manga

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Download for free: https://github.com/dominostars/playtranslate

Hey all! For those unfamiliar, PlayTranslate is a free, open-source app that translates your screen's text in real-time, or keep the original with instant definitions, anki/yomitan integration, reading help and more. Works offline, full dual screen support, no tracking, no accounts.

It's been awhile since I've posted but there's been a ton of quality of life improvements: you can access most features without ever leaving your game, customize the on-screen controls, use Bilibili's new (possibly temporary) free translation service, and see conjugation hints and tables for words in English, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and German.

Full disclosure: The app was built with the assistance of claude code, but the default translation services are not llms, and you can pick and choose between many different online and offline translation options.

Please give it a shot and let me know how it goes!

Showcase Unravel (PS4 game) running at 60 fps on Retroid G2

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Does anyone remember this game? I recalled being blown away when I saw this game 10 years ago, and even today it still looks good - especially on an OLED screen.

I think PS4 is going to surpass PS3 emulation development, many of the games can be played at flawless 60 fps on Android. The best thing about it is that there's no shader caching required - it just runs immediately.

The only drawback at the moment is that they can't run the "pkg" rom file directly, you need to unpack the rom file on your computer. It's easy and takes less than a minute, but some people wouldn't want that for their emulator.

Ok guys we need to talk about these screens. I know theres a disclaimer for early engineering prototype but does that apply to the screens? Because if this is PEAK brightness its going to a very hard sell for me. Not only is this already overpriced at $300 imo but to have to deal with these screens as well major deal breaker. Some people say it could just be the video but I don’t know. I highly advise people to please wait for reviews before throwing money at this because I just dont trust Anbernic to not fuck up their golden goose. I really hope Im wrong but Anbernic has a track record of bs like screen over sharpening, frame pacing issues, or in this case screen darkness. Retroid’s offerings although not perfect are looking to be better. (Duo Lite Screens for comparison)

What do you guys think? At the very least Ide like Anbernic to know this is a concern.

Lounge Taking the Seeds Out: Inside SeedlessDS and Its Quest for Better DS Emulation on Handhelds

I've been chatting with SapphireRhodonite, the sole developer of SeedlessDS over the last couple weeks now, for what I believe is his first proper interview about the project. SeedlessDS has been pretty pivotal for me personally while testing and reviewing the Retroid Pocket Duo Lite; the lightweight approach and proper dual-screen support have made it my preferred way to play DS games in the end

We talked about his history with programming and the Nintendo DS, why SeedlessDS exists alongside WatermelonDS, the challenges of making two physical screens actually feel like one console, developing specifically for more modest Android hardware, and where he hopes to take the emulator next. If you're interested in DS emulation or this new wave of dual-screen handhelds, hopefully there’s something interesting in here for you :)

Lounge Show me your home console SBC setups

Feels like most of what gets posted here lately is handhelds (not complaining), but I’m way more curious about the stuff that actually lives under the TV.

Pi, Orange Pi, MiSTer, some mini PC, a custom case you printed yourself... whatever you’ve turned into a proper living room console. Let’s see them.

If you don’t mind sharing... what hardware it’s running on? OS and frontend? which controllers you ended up going with? and pics, obviously.

I’ve always had a soft spot for builds that feel like a real console and not just “a PC plugged into the TV.” Bonus points if the rest of the household can use it without calling you for help lol

Discussion Dusted off the RG35XXH to give slot a try

Thumbnail
gallery
19 Upvotes

Here are some of my thoughts after running slot on my RG35XXH for the past 24 hours:

- installation was very straightforward, especially if you’re used to installing other OS and UI options. Currently using a SanDisk Ultra Class 10 16GB card and a healthy amount of games. One card should be enough for everything, especially since I didn’t see a way to use TF2. (Edit: there is TF2 support)- if all you want to do is play GB, GBC, and/or GBA, then I can’t think of a quicker way other than having an Everdrive in a genuine GB handheld.
- I did experience some audio crackle with some GBA games, but swapping cores to gPSP seemed to help. It could also be that I’ve dropped my XXH more times that I should’ve, so it could be a physical issue.
- adjusting brightness using Start + d-pad up/down is a bit of a pain on this handheld, but understandable since the SP line was the original focus.
- the cart label scraper featured on the slot website works quite well. The entire label library for my game collection was roughly 2GB.
- the GB Micro overlay isn’t isn’t included, but there is an SP one that will load automatically if you’re using a 640x480 device.

I may flash another slot card to run on my RGSP to get that true GBA experience, but for now, I’ll keep this one on my XXH.

Showcase Setting up my first gift handheld : Anbernic RG34XX SP

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

After a year of being in this hobby i finally got asked to set up a gift handheld for my little Brothers birthday.

He knows im in to retro handhelds and at first he saw a ad on instagram with a R36 promising 40,000.00 games. But I told him there are better out there for cheaper and if he gives me a idea what he wants.

We went down the retro handheld list and he always wanted a Gameboy SP that he played till the screen failed.. decided on the color and just had two must haves. Halo and GTA San Andreas. Anything else I could add if I think he'd like it.

I looked up Crownpuff deals and I got really lucky. Using his link I ordered a Black RG34XXSP and it still had 2gb of RAM which surprised me as 2gb model stopped being produced 8 months ago? However if you have the time wait for 11/11 singles day in China as its like black friday and there may be some good deals

I know it doesn't matter for PSX and down but maybe it helps for his two portmaster games he wanted. The SP also plays PSP better than the brick but I don't know if that's due to the higher ram or better processor

As im setting up the handheld and testing out the games and emulator i forgot how good a GBSP form factor is. I just love how it folds smaller than the brick. Protects the screen, then when you fold it out to play its a bit taller and wider. I find it more comfortable to play vs the brick.

I go back and forth over the screen the brick on paper has the better pixel density and screen dimension but its not a bad experience playing the SP. Even the tall forehead doesnt bother me as much once I start playing and my eyes concentrate on the screen.

I really wish Trimui would make a flip handheld id 100% buy it

The sticks take some getting use to but they are easy enough to ignore in the games that dont need them and they are better than the Dpad to stick setup that i use on my brick for n64 games

I tried to prevent choice paralysis by using favorite and collections tabs. I was very tempted to use a 5 game handheld retrogamecorps setup but as we reminise about our past handhelds and the games he couldn't play anymore the game list grew and grew

Tldr : I set up a flippy handheld and i like it soo much ill probably end up buying one for myself
