Has anyone here learned Latvian as a second language and reached a good level, and could you share what helped you most and what resources you used?

We are a group of four visiting Riga in a couple of weeks. We are there for a weekend and we are looking for some unusual sights and fun experiences. We are into history, food and beer and sport and such. Currently we consider a football match or trying the bobsleigh just outside Riga.
Has anyone some good advice on what to do and where to go in Riga?
