Discussion LBJ’s slow suicide - called so by his aides - from 1969-1973 - has always haunted me deeply. He seemed to have lost a great sense of joy and will in living.

The visit to the White House on February 3rd, 1971 was the first time Jackie, Caroline and John Jr. visited since they left in December of 1963 following the assassination. In addition to touring the White House led by President Nixon and his family, the Kennedys also got to view the then newly finished portraits of President Kennedy and Jackie.

Discussion Did any Presidents have non-American accents?

Andrew Jackson spoke in a typical southern accent of the time, but when he was angry he apparently spoke with a thick Northern Irish brogue. This is the only instance I've read of a President having a non-American accent and I was wondering if you guys knew of any others?

Discussion “Russia at the present time is at a crossroads.…The ideas of freedom are on trial. If they don’t work, there will be a reversion to, not communism, but what I call a New Despotism…which would be infected with the virus of Russian imperialism.” - Nixon, 1993

Yes, I know A. Ham wasn’t a president but I’m not sure which other sub would appreciate this.

Doesn’t this look like a profile of Alexander Hamilton? I was getting my blood drawn and the arm part of the chair that raises runs up against the wall and has made this mark.

Discussion Can the President sing his state of the Union address?

While unusual , I've only just noticed that there is no specific rule that expressly prohibits a president from singing his address to congress. Why has this not happened yet in history? The vice president and speaker of the house could provide the backing vocals. Could you imagine if, during Bill Clinton's 2000 address, he sung a message of apology to the American people :

" I made some mistakes , yes, baby, god knows I made some mistakes... " - I would cry

Obviously, I am aware that Ford dueted the national athem alongside Rockefeller during his swearing in ceremony but that can hardly be classified as singing considered how half-hearted/awkward he was while doing it. What I want is an honest to god solo performance.

Discussion How seriously do you view the John Edwards haircut scandal?

Post image
19 Upvotes

During the 2008 Democratic primary, Edwards found himself in hot water after it was leaked that he had used campaign funds to invest in lavish personal haircuts.

In total, Beverly Hills celebrity stylist Joseph Torrenueva gave Edward’s three haircuts during the course of the campaign trail, to the modest tune of over 2000 dollars.

Edwards was widely mocked, particularly since he had been running as the most seemingly progressive candidate in the race.

The Senator claimed the payments were made by mistake using the campaign funds, and pledged he would reimburse the money, but the damage was done. This would prove to be the greatest scandal to befall John Edwards.

Note: I cannot find a bigger version of this painting and it was the only source I can find, so I took the original painting from that website and make it bigger so that it's easier to see. However, it may be hard to see the details on the Presidents faces, so I'm sorry if it does look blurry.

Discussion Thoughts on Obama & Russia? His handling of Ukraine in 2014?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I posted links to these videos yesterday and asked for opinions, but thought I would simplify it by making a single video. *Russia had stabbed George W. Bush in the back and invaded the country of Georgia months before Obama won the election and took office. Why did Obama want to "reset" relations and give Russia another chance? What was he really trying to achieve? What went wrong?

Article The man who stopped Czolgosz from firing a third shot at McKinley was erased from the trial record. His name was James Parker.

Most accounts of McKinley's assassination go from the two shots straight to Czolgosz getting dogpiled. Contemporary reporting says the first man on him was James "Big Jim" Parker. Parker was born to enslaved parents in Atlanta, worked as a constable, a Pullman waiter, and a mail carrier, and had just lost his catering job at the Exposition. He was next in line behind Czolgosz.
Several eyewitnesses said Parker hit Czolgosz and knocked the revolver away before he could fire again. Agent George Foster's report to Washington, as quoted in the Buffalo Enquirer, said "a Negro hit his arm up." Mark Hanna thanked Parker personally, and Booker T. Washington spoke at a rally in his honor.
At the trial two weeks later, Parker wasn't called. Foster testified: "I never saw no colored man in the whole fracas." Two Buffalo papers then accused Parker of fraud. Parker's own comment was: "I don't say it was done with any intent to defraud, but it looks mighty funny, that's all."
He spent the next few years lecturing and selling magazine subscriptions. He died in a Philadelphia asylum in 1907, and his unclaimed body was dissected at Jefferson Medical College.
The order of who hit Czolgosz first can't really be settled, with a dozen men landing on him in under three seconds. What's interesting to me is how quickly a story the AP had already sent around the world disappeared from the official record.
I wrote a longer piece on him for my Substack (link in comments). I write it because I enjoy digging into this stuff and I like the nuanced back-and-forth more than the hot takes you usually get online. I'm curious whether anyone here has read Kachun's 2010 article or knows more about what happened to Parker between 1902 and 1907.
