Postpartum depression feels like watching a carousel I can't get off of.

I'm six months postpartum, and the best way I can describe my emotions lately is like watching a carousel spin in front of me.

Happiness, sadness, anger, fear, happiness again, silent screaming, and then numbness. Round and round, over and over, each emotion passing by in a blur. Sometimes I feel like I'm standing in the middle watching it all happen, and other times I'm on the carousel itself, being dragged along with no way to slow it down.

Some days I feel everything all at once. Other days, I feel absolutely nothing. I can go from laughing and feeling genuinely happy to wanting to cry, scream, or disappear into a quiet room, sometimes within the same hour. And before I can even begin to understand why I'm feeling one thing, another emotion comes rushing around.

It's exhausting. Not just feeling everything, but constantly trying to make sense of it. Trying to figure out which emotions are justified, which are amplified by postpartum depression and anxiety, and which are simply the result of being overwhelmed by life. I don't even know what my baseline feels like anymore.

And the strangest part is that I'm genuinely happy, too. I have this beautiful six-month-old daughter who has brought more love into my life than I ever thought possible. I adore being her mom. I love her smiles, her laughter, her little personality developing. There are moments when I'm so overwhelmingly happy that I can't imagine life being any better.

And then the carousel comes around again.

It's been the best worst year of my life. I've never experienced so much love while simultaneously feeling so emotionally lost. I'm not sure I even miss my old self. I think I miss feeling grounded, feeling whole, feeling like I can trust my own emotions instead of constantly bracing for the next one.

I don't know if anyone else experiences postpartum depression this way, but sometimes I wish I could just stop the carousel for a little while. Not even to be happy. Just to sit in the stillness long enough to figure out how I actually feel.

Because right now, everything is moving so fast, and I'm standing here watching it all go by, wondering when I'll finally feel like I'm standing on solid ground again.

Differing pregnancy views

My husband and I have been married for almost 3 years and been together for 6. We’ve started talking about kids but my mind has been stuck on comments he has made in the past and recently.

Most recently (today) he mentioned he saw a thread where a husband said his wife was heavily pursuing him after being only 2 weeks post partem and the man was scared he would hurt his wife. My husband was laughing and said he thought the situation was funny but if the roles were reversed people would be up in arms. I commented that I’m shocked and didn’t believe the story because many of my friends have had babies naturally over the last few months and all of them have said their bodies didn’t feel anywhere near normal until around the 4 week mark. He then proceeded to tell me that in other countries, women “pop their babies out” and go back to work within a week like it’s nothing. He said it’s an American thing (he is from South America) to have a long recovery from a V birth. I feel like there is no way that’s true. But when I told him that it concerned me he thought that, to told me I was being dramatic and projecting my fears for the future on a situation that hasn’t even happened to us.

I don’t think he would ever force himself on me after having a baby, but he does talk about intimacy daily and make s*xual comments daily. So I wouldn’t put it past him to make comments when I eventually have a baby and am post partem. But comments like what I mentioned in the paragraph above are very off-putting to me.

I’m not one to post about private conversations or my personal life. I don’t even have social media. But when I tried to talk to my husband about it just now, I voiced that I was worried when I have a baby, he won’t take my healing seriously and will pressure me for sex or pester me about it. His response was “I see” and nothing else.

Am I making something out of nothing? Is what he said true about other countries?

I 34F need advice

After pregnancy loss, found out my boyfriend is married and have a kid, I suffered depression here in Japan. I cant go to work because I break down during work. (tried to work twice). I told my boss that I will leave for good but told me I can have vacation to relax and refresh my mind. But, in my mind, I don't know if how long will I be okay or if I will be okay after going back home. I dont want to be a meiwaku for them and if I go on vacation, I would still continue paying taxes and insurances here. I have been on leave( including maternity leave) since July and no income since then. I am just tired. I dont know what should i do

What kind of practical support actually helped you after having a baby?

I think people often focus on what to buy for a new baby, but practical support for the parent can matter just as much.

I'm curious what kinds of help people genuinely appreciated during postpartum recovery.

Was it someone bringing meals, helping with chores, checking in without expecting a reply, or something completely different?

I'd like to better understand what feels supportive rather than overwhelming.

lonely & sad

I am a FTM mom (26F) to a 3.5 month old baby boy and I have gotten so lucky to be able to stay home with him while my husband works, but holy crap am i lonely. I have family and friends who come over occasionally but everyone is busy with their own lives and i understand that. My husband works long, late hours so i am alone a lot of the time with LO. The moment my husband leaves for work i cry everytime. the moment the sun starts going down i cry everytime. the moment my son wakes up from his naps (only contact napping rn) i cry everytime. I am just going through the same motions everyday. I try and get out of the house, and on my husbands off days he gives me plenty of time to go see friends, go for a drive or whatever i need. He is SO supportive and i’m really lucky for that. But still i find myself so many times everyday feeling regretful and saying “i really don’t want to do this anymore”. I love my baby, but between the sleep deprivation (he wakes every hour now), having to constantly entertain my little man and soaking in all the information that’s constantly thrown my way as a new mom i am RIDDLED with anxiety. I know i should probably talk to my doctor but I am still waiting on insurance (thanks america) and cannot afford it currently. This is just hard, and i know as he gets older it will get more rewarding and he will be able to play independently for longer, but dang. it really freaking sucks in the moment sometimes. I will never underestimate a mom ever again.

Wife literally said she doesn’t need me in her life, and this line just keeps repeating in my mind right now.

Never dealt with this before

I’m 7 weeks postpartum with so much to be joyous for with all the help I have from grandparents, night nurse and supportive friends, yet I’ve never felt so unhappy, panicked and needy in my life. I used to be an incredibly fun-loving, easy-going person that was so rational and have never experienced anything like this. No preconditions or risk factors, and can’t help but feel so unlucky and desperate to get back to my old self.

Anyone that can relate? Would love to chat about your experience.

Unwanted advice / family interference

I just want to vent .. I can acknowledge I possibly have some PPA going on … I also suffer from GAD normally and was on lexapro for a good little while prior to my pregnancy but requested to be tapered off and during my pregnancy oddly I was pretty low anxiety. My baby girl is 2 weeks and 3 days and primarily breast fed . This is my first time breast feeding as I was very young when I had my
Oldest so it’s been a learning curve but baby girl and I are getting better at our latches and she’s above her Birth weight. However when it comes to my family I don’t always feel very supported. Baby girl does occasionally get a bottle from Dad if I need to take a break or tend to something with my oldest . My mom however made a big deal about my babies breastfeeding frequency and letting her self soothe. Personally
At this age I don’t believe newborn can be “spoiled “ she’s still learning life outside the womb . My Significant other/ dad is very helpful so I do get a space to myself . But it seems like my mom is over the top with you need to put her down or she’s always on the boob .

Dread being alone… does it go away?

My baby boy is 11 weeks, almost 12. I feel like I should be doing better with this by now. While I have made some progress, I’m scared that this feeling is going to stick. The mornings are hardest for me to be alone because I have the whole day ahead of me, especially if I don’t work (work part time, sometimes less than part time).
It’s so easy for my mind to wander and spiral while alone. Everything just feels so anxiety filled these days trying to learn everything about our new way of life.

Again, thankful for the progress I HAVE made. I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this and if so, when it went away.

Thank you ❤️

If my son doesn’t sleep soon, I’m going to hurt him or myself.

As he gets older, it gets worse.
I cannot escape his crying in this tiny house, even when my partner helps.

Fucking absolutely laughable that he used to sleep 9-10 hour stretches.

He’s up every hour and I’m going to drive us both off a bridge.

I should have never done this.
This was a terrible mistake.

I knew the sleep would be bad; I didn’t know it would be fucking maddening.
