Got a research study? POST IT HERE. All other studies will be removed.

We get a lot of requests for research studies and usually reject them as not everyone wants to be a part of the study when exploring this forum for support. But we run into the issue of people not asking for permission and posting studies regardless. If you are a researcher, you are able to post your study as a comment within this thread for parents to explore at their convenience if they are interested. Any studies posted anywhere else will be removed.

RESEARCHERS: Post your study link with the following:

  1. the study title,
  2. lay summary,
  3. the study investigator(s)'s name,
  4. sponsoring institution,
  5. ethics board approval number,
  6. ethics approval expiry date, and
  7. the estimated dates of recruitment.
  8. It would be best practice to indicate when the study is no longer recruiting, and to let people know where the results are available once published.

PARENTS: Report any posts without research ethics board approval numbers and dates, or any that seem suspicious. Sort by newest to have the highest odds of seeing active studies if you would like to participate.

How can you tell if a study is legitimate? Consider the "informed consent form", which is usually the first page of the questionnaire, and must be provided prior to participating. Here is a link to an American University's description on how informed consent should be handled. For many of these studies, they should describe the risks of the study and how they are handling them - such as making sure that they're only asking for the information that they need, and how they are keeping the information that you provide secure from anyone accessing it.

Peruse studies at your own risk, not all are posted by researchers who get properly reviewed and any studies, regulated or not, may contain triggers. For example, some students in psychology classes develop questionnaires for school projects. Do not feel obligated to participate, this is not an endorsement, we are not looking at the studies if nobody reports them. You can back out of any study at any time.

This thread may be unpinned and a new one posted/pinned at the moderators' convenience, depending on how many studies are posted. Moderators will review comments at their convenience and reserve the right to remove studies for any reason without justification, such as reports by parents.

Differing pregnancy views

My husband and I have been married for almost 3 years and been together for 6. We’ve started talking about kids but my mind has been stuck on comments he has made in the past and recently.

Most recently (today) he mentioned he saw a thread where a husband said his wife was heavily pursuing him after being only 2 weeks post partem and the man was scared he would hurt his wife. My husband was laughing and said he thought the situation was funny but if the roles were reversed people would be up in arms. I commented that I’m shocked and didn’t believe the story because many of my friends have had babies naturally over the last few months and all of them have said their bodies didn’t feel anywhere near normal until around the 4 week mark. He then proceeded to tell me that in other countries, women “pop their babies out” and go back to work within a week like it’s nothing. He said it’s an American thing (he is from South America) to have a long recovery from a V birth. I feel like there is no way that’s true. But when I told him that it concerned me he thought that, to told me I was being dramatic and projecting my fears for the future on a situation that hasn’t even happened to us.

I don’t think he would ever force himself on me after having a baby, but he does talk about intimacy daily and make s*xual comments daily. So I wouldn’t put it past him to make comments when I eventually have a baby and am post partem. But comments like what I mentioned in the paragraph above are very off-putting to me.

I’m not one to post about private conversations or my personal life. I don’t even have social media. But when I tried to talk to my husband about it just now, I voiced that I was worried when I have a baby, he won’t take my healing seriously and will pressure me for sex or pester me about it. His response was “I see” and nothing else.

Am I making something out of nothing? Is what he said true about other countries?

Postpartum depression feels like watching a carousel I can't get off of.

I'm six months postpartum, and the best way I can describe my emotions lately is like watching a carousel spin in front of me.

Happiness, sadness, anger, fear, happiness again, silent screaming, and then numbness. Round and round, over and over, each emotion passing by in a blur. Sometimes I feel like I'm standing in the middle watching it all happen, and other times I'm on the carousel itself, being dragged along with no way to slow it down.

Some days I feel everything all at once. Other days, I feel absolutely nothing. I can go from laughing and feeling genuinely happy to wanting to cry, scream, or disappear into a quiet room, sometimes within the same hour. And before I can even begin to understand why I'm feeling one thing, another emotion comes rushing around.

It's exhausting. Not just feeling everything, but constantly trying to make sense of it. Trying to figure out which emotions are justified, which are amplified by postpartum depression and anxiety, and which are simply the result of being overwhelmed by life. I don't even know what my baseline feels like anymore.

And the strangest part is that I'm genuinely happy, too. I have this beautiful six-month-old daughter who has brought more love into my life than I ever thought possible. I adore being her mom. I love her smiles, her laughter, her little personality developing. There are moments when I'm so overwhelmingly happy that I can't imagine life being any better.

And then the carousel comes around again.

It's been the best worst year of my life. I've never experienced so much love while simultaneously feeling so emotionally lost. I'm not sure I even miss my old self. I think I miss feeling grounded, feeling whole, feeling like I can trust my own emotions instead of constantly bracing for the next one.

I don't know if anyone else experiences postpartum depression this way, but sometimes I wish I could just stop the carousel for a little while. Not even to be happy. Just to sit in the stillness long enough to figure out how I actually feel.

Because right now, everything is moving so fast, and I'm standing here watching it all go by, wondering when I'll finally feel like I'm standing on solid ground again.

lonely & sad

I am a FTM mom (26F) to a 3.5 month old baby boy and I have gotten so lucky to be able to stay home with him while my husband works, but holy crap am i lonely. I have family and friends who come over occasionally but everyone is busy with their own lives and i understand that. My husband works long, late hours so i am alone a lot of the time with LO. The moment my husband leaves for work i cry everytime. the moment the sun starts going down i cry everytime. the moment my son wakes up from his naps (only contact napping rn) i cry everytime. I am just going through the same motions everyday. I try and get out of the house, and on my husbands off days he gives me plenty of time to go see friends, go for a drive or whatever i need. He is SO supportive and i’m really lucky for that. But still i find myself so many times everyday feeling regretful and saying “i really don’t want to do this anymore”. I love my baby, but between the sleep deprivation (he wakes every hour now), having to constantly entertain my little man and soaking in all the information that’s constantly thrown my way as a new mom i am RIDDLED with anxiety. I know i should probably talk to my doctor but I am still waiting on insurance (thanks america) and cannot afford it currently. This is just hard, and i know as he gets older it will get more rewarding and he will be able to play independently for longer, but dang. it really freaking sucks in the moment sometimes. I will never underestimate a mom ever again.

Never dealt with this before

I’m 7 weeks postpartum with so much to be joyous for with all the help I have from grandparents, night nurse and supportive friends, yet I’ve never felt so unhappy, panicked and needy in my life. I used to be an incredibly fun-loving, easy-going person that was so rational and have never experienced anything like this. No preconditions or risk factors, and can’t help but feel so unlucky and desperate to get back to my old self.

Anyone that can relate? Would love to chat about your experience.

I 34F need advice

After pregnancy loss, found out my boyfriend is married and have a kid, I suffered depression here in Japan. I cant go to work because I break down during work. (tried to work twice). I told my boss that I will leave for good but told me I can have vacation to relax and refresh my mind. But, in my mind, I don't know if how long will I be okay or if I will be okay after going back home. I dont want to be a meiwaku for them and if I go on vacation, I would still continue paying taxes and insurances here. I have been on leave( including maternity leave) since July and no income since then. I am just tired. I dont know what should i do

Unwanted advice / family interference

I just want to vent .. I can acknowledge I possibly have some PPA going on … I also suffer from GAD normally and was on lexapro for a good little while prior to my pregnancy but requested to be tapered off and during my pregnancy oddly I was pretty low anxiety. My baby girl is 2 weeks and 3 days and primarily breast fed . This is my first time breast feeding as I was very young when I had my
Oldest so it’s been a learning curve but baby girl and I are getting better at our latches and she’s above her Birth weight. However when it comes to my family I don’t always feel very supported. Baby girl does occasionally get a bottle from Dad if I need to take a break or tend to something with my oldest . My mom however made a big deal about my babies breastfeeding frequency and letting her self soothe. Personally
At this age I don’t believe newborn can be “spoiled “ she’s still learning life outside the womb . My Significant other/ dad is very helpful so I do get a space to myself . But it seems like my mom is over the top with you need to put her down or she’s always on the boob .

What kind of practical support actually helped you after having a baby?

I think people often focus on what to buy for a new baby, but practical support for the parent can matter just as much.

I'm curious what kinds of help people genuinely appreciated during postpartum recovery.

Was it someone bringing meals, helping with chores, checking in without expecting a reply, or something completely different?

I'd like to better understand what feels supportive rather than overwhelming.

Dread being alone… does it go away?

My baby boy is 11 weeks, almost 12. I feel like I should be doing better with this by now. While I have made some progress, I’m scared that this feeling is going to stick. The mornings are hardest for me to be alone because I have the whole day ahead of me, especially if I don’t work (work part time, sometimes less than part time).
It’s so easy for my mind to wander and spiral while alone. Everything just feels so anxiety filled these days trying to learn everything about our new way of life.

Again, thankful for the progress I HAVE made. I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this and if so, when it went away.

Thank you ❤️

postpartum uglies

Before I gave birth I was so confident, high as hell self esteem. Needed to go to places just to walk into the room as me for the high of it. Now in postpartum, I don’t want any pictures of me, I hate how I look/my body. I’m shy and reserved. It’s hard being intimate, I feel like I completely lost myself. I know this is a common thing & I know it takes time, but what have y’all done to quicken the process/feel better about yourselves? I miss being obsessed with myself.

If my son doesn’t sleep soon, I’m going to hurt him or myself.

As he gets older, it gets worse.
I cannot escape his crying in this tiny house, even when my partner helps.

Fucking absolutely laughable that he used to sleep 9-10 hour stretches.

He’s up every hour and I’m going to drive us both off a bridge.

I should have never done this.
This was a terrible mistake.

I knew the sleep would be bad; I didn’t know it would be fucking maddening.

5 months postpartum

I’ve been dizzy every day on and off for the past month to two months. I have Medicaid but no one takes Medicaid for adults. I can’t afford insurance because I’m being garnished by a debt collector and I can’t file bankruptcy because I cannot afford an attorney. There’s no air conditioning in part of my work place where I’m predominantly in and I have my student loans that are also off of deferment and I was denied another deferment.

I don’t know WTF IS WRONG WITH ME AND IM SO TIRED OF THIS FKN HELL HOLE OF A SYSTEM WE LIVE IN. Healthcare is a joke, my job is a joke, and my man says if I get insurance the doctors aren’t going to be able to help me.

But I’m supposed to just keep going!!?? Cleaning, cooking, working and fkn feeling like this EVERY DAY! I’m FKN DONE. I think about death all the time. Because at least then I’d owe no one money, I wouldn’t be dealing with unsafe work conditions and I wouldn’t have to deal with every other thing I haven’t complained about on this post.

I just tried to put in a menstrual disc and I cried my eyes out. I don’t want anything inside me.

Rant. Open to advice.

9 months postpartum. I have lichen simplex chronicus so my inner labia gets itchy and tears.

I use cotton pads because I’m pretty sure forever chemicals from regular pads is what caused the lichen. I’m too afraid to try tampons again cuz whatever I have going on outside I would hate to start internally (itching and tearing). Anyway, even cotton pads cause a flare up and tearing. So I tried the saalt menstrual disc. I cried so much. Partially pain. But mostly discomfort. I don’t want anything in my vagina.

The lichen and postpartum recovery makes sex hard to come by. I need clitoral stimulation to get anywhere with sex and haven’t had that for 2 years because it causes irritation (oral or hand). I’ve had sex twice since baby and first time it hurt and second time I just didn’t like it. I have no sexual desire. My desire started going down after the lichen diagnosis and after the baby I have no desire.

I think about female genital mutilation a lot because I’m done down there, I don’t want anything inside, on or around it. I hate my vagina. I sometimes want to physically harm my vagina. I used to be so sexual and I feel like I’m being punished for it. I hate myself. I’m starting to hate life. I’m a dysfunctional woman. Broken.

I asked my doctor about pelvic floor therapy. They said to try a lot of lube and if that doesn’t work to come in for an exam. I can’t even get to the point of trying lube.

Mourning my freedom. Does it ever get better?

My daughter is 4 months old and I love her so much. She was born with digestive issues that were awful (basically she fussed or cried whenever she was awake) but that's gotten so much better. I had PPD which robbed me of appreciating the newborn in front of me and made me want to run away from everything. I saw my psych at 5 weeks PP for meds which made me feel less overwhelmed and more like myself. My parents also moved in with us to help with the baby's issues and to take some of the load off of us. It was NOT easy or straightforward with the baby but she's improved now and the grandparents have just moved out.

My husband is trying his best, this is a steep learning curve for us both, but with me being home with the baby it makes me feel like I am trapped being her mom. I feel like I'm not allowed to have time for myself like how dads do. I feel like everyone (society) expects mothers to give up everything and find ways to get stronger and do it all. What is wrong with me getting help (e.g. nanny or grandparents) when I need it and having some time to myself? It's like being hyperindividual is the goal in today's world and anything besides that is seen as falling short.

I miss my freedom. I miss listening to podcasts or making a coffee when I feel like it and actually drinking it hot. I miss adult conversation.

I will go to war and die for my daughter. I love her so much it brings me to tears. So this isn't about me not loving her enough.

Does it ever get better?

Postpartum help and mental support

Hey mamas, I hope it’s okay if I share a resource here.
I run a digital space called The Mom Haven. A while back, I realized how incredibly broken the postpartum support system is. New mothers are handed a baby and told to "enjoy every moment," while dealing with a massive hormone crash, sensory overload, and severe sleep deprivation.
Most of the advice out there is fluff. Exhausted moms don't have time to read 300-page parenting books or scroll through endless blogs at 3 AM looking for relief.
So, I did the heavy lifting for you. I spent months looking into nervous system regulation, interviewing maternal wellness advocates, and condensing the clinical advice into simple, actionable steps.
I organized the data into a zero-fluff, step-by-step digital guide called The 7-Day Postpartum Overwhelm Reset. It gives you just one tiny, manageable task per day to lower your fight-or-flight response and catch your breath.
I want to gift this resource completely for free to anyone in this community who is currently feeling underwater.
If you are in the thick of it right now and want a copy, just comment "RESET" below and I’ll send the free access link directly to your Messenger inbox. No catches, no upsells—just a structured tool to help you get your sanity back.

Upset

So my best friend and I got in an argument because of mine and my fiancé’s financial situation, part of which is because she owed us close to $1000 that she promised to have paid back before my son was born.

Financially we are living paycheck to paycheck right now on a 1 income household. I am on disability, so I help where I can. Otherwise my fiance does the heavy lifting financially.

Anyways, she said we didn’t have our priorities straight because every once in a while we spend money on stuff that we want.

I just want to say that our son has everything he needs/wants. He is on $700 dollars worth of formula a month, we don’t qualify for financial assistance. He has never once ran out of formula/diapers.

I think I’m just hurt because this isn’t the first time she has called me spoiled. It really hurts. I know I need to reevaluate that relationship because for the longest time it has been one sided.. me being the doormat.

She is currently 17 weeks pregnant with her rainbow baby, so I know she’s a bit on edge right now because of the extra hormones. I also shouldn’t be this upset about her telling me my priorities weren’t in line, but I am because she is the type to go and tell everyone else… I’m already struggling mentally. I have PPD am in therapy and getting ready to start trauma therapy…

She is my only friend, I don’t have a village like some moms. She was in the delivery room with me because I have no relationship with my mother due to her narcissistic behaviors. She even got to hold my son before I did, so I feel like if I lose this relationship I’m gonna isolate even more than I already do..
