Discussion A general outline for Azula redemption idea (slight Vinland Saga spoilers) Spoiler
First of all, I'm only writing this post because of how they brutally cancelled the adult Zuko movie for whatever corporate reasons, knowing we'll probably never see a movie like this and if they ever make it, I doubt it'll provide a clean cut arc for her character as well written as us fans would like (I'm not saying I could write any better). Anyways, here's my idea, or rough basis for one:
So, maybe during her lonely ass stay in jail, her mental vulnerability increases, causing her to lash out at guards etc, even growing resentment to anything that reminds her of her father, now imagining that her father had betrayed her (of course, she's right, just not accurate).
This is primarily due to Ozai taking his own life, and i'm not going to go in depth into how he did, but why. We all know he's a narcissist who views himself as the most important thing in the world, this could also mean that his expectations for himself are extremely high. From a narcissist of his scale, losing the war would not just be a loss but a genuine annihilation of his identity, especially without his bending. This leads to him taking his own life. Not to mention, being trapped in prison by his 'son', someone he viewed as inferior would be legit unbearable daily humiliation.
After hearing this info, Azula would be broken. It's safe to say, as her narcissism is a microcosm of his, she'd probably want to die as well. She's built her whole personality just for HIM, almost everything she's done in her life has been for HIM. Her whole identity is literally intertwined with her fathers no matter how toxic their relationship was. Now, she has no reason to be herself, with only a ghost of her mother in her mind.
Ngl, her personality would be fucked. Not saying her personality is just like Ozai's, but it will share some similarities. Example, if u were to study Ozai's personality under a microscope, it'd provide a slight template for Azula's psyche. And now, she doesnt just feel defeated, but feels like her life was for nothing, meaning there is zero point to her ambition, identity and all of her struggles were all in vain. Zuko would probably notice this.
After a while, she'd enter depression. This is when he decides to act. First of all, he cannot even reconcile with her, despite her extreme passivity. Every conversation with her, just him talking most of the time, would just drive her further down into depression. He starts to realise, that she needs to go somewhere isolated from the fire nation. I aint going into logistics, but as Zuko is king and has practically proved his benevolence, there has to be at least a few open minded trusted individuals, maybe those trusted by the main gang who are two things: 1, not fire nation and 2, trusted. Btw, this is only taking place after he starts to realise this shit aint an act and that she's lost all will to hurt others....
But he eventually finds this little family, maybe apart of a small community and sends her to maybe work in a farm, Thorfin style if any of u have seen Vinland Saga, which this is quite loosely inspired by. And they have offered to keep her identity secret. Idk what bender family, but non-fire definitely. At first she's quite cold, lazy, exhausted and hard to work with, but over time she reluctantly starts to work, live and eat with them, finding some purpose. Btw, her personality aint redeemed yet, far from it actually. Some ppl in the community do not like her and find her strange, after all, I doubt she'd assimilate well after being a princess, and traumatised/ptsd ridden too. This is where this comes in.
The reason others give good advice but cant follow their own well if stuck in similar situations is because they see others problems from a more detached/ less emotionally invested pov. Turns out, the dad, maybe the owner of the farm aint the best to his family. Not as bad as Ozai and definitely not an Ozai lite, but bad enough that it's somewhat noticeable and for the most part, he's morally decent. If u like this post, u can fill in the gaps to how he's not a good father or motives, but all i know is that amongst his two siblings, he plays favorites and greatly prefers the one who's smart over his youngest, who happens to be severely mentally handicapped. Btw, the mother has passed away a few years before due to terminal illness.
Azula has to sit at dinner tables every day and watch this shit unfold. At first, she barely acknowledges this (firstly due to how deep her depression is starting off and second, as the dad would prolly put up a front to try to look as kind as possible). But over time, she does. She dont know why, but it does not resonate well with her, especially after getting to know how this prized child is not happy with his situation. She begins to see her old family life again, this acts as a kind of exposure therapy for her and lets her see some of the cracks in how Ozai held her up on a pedestal whilst diminishing Zuko. Btw, the father has a few younger children, but these are the ones that hold the most importance.
This does no favors to treat her depression, but does give her some valuable introspection and insight. Dunno what happens during this time, but she does open up to the children, younger than her at this time and grows to slightly resent the father, but seeing him as frail and weak, due to his age, she associates him with Ozai, albeit he actually loves his children despite being toxic, and the cracks widen in how she views her own father. Over a few years, she grows calmer and more open to emotional connection. I might make a part 2 or write a fan fic detailing how this comes to be, but a few years later, she finally responds to Zuko's attempts to reach out, now open to reconciling with him. She also bonds with the children a yay bit, even if she hated them at the start, and is sorta show-offy to them most of the time.
But here's the catch: She will regress at times to her old personality. Redemption is never linear and never will be for anyone, even if they are fictional characters. And she is not suddenly emotionally warm, just more pragmatic than her older self and is far better at putting herself in others shoes. She occasionally commits cruel acts, but eventually, maybe a day, year or month later, she'll randomly think back to it, realise she crossed a line and either stay silent, move on or apologise. Or maybe she'd try justifying it. In short, I don't think she'll ever be redeemed or that redemption is the best solution for her, but she can at least have her eyes opened, not just to her own suffering but also to that of others.
Thoughts? and critical feedback pls as I'm tryna get better at writing character psychology and I'm using Azula's character as a way to improve.
