Discussion On Blue Flames

Azula having mastered blue flames at such a young age is actually an overlooked tragedy. The skill needed requires great mental strength and precise emotional control.

Blue flames can't be born out of unfocused passion or energy. The bender must be in a certain headspace: laser focused, clinical, and devoid of excessive emotional impulse.

In a girl that young... .Azula spent so much time being isolated and trying to earn Ozai's approval (and Ursula's Ursa's love) that she mastered the most difficult form of firebending and used it casually. The amount of time that wouldve gone into that is not typical of a well adjusted child. The average tween/teen would have distractions like friends, crushes, and age appropriate angst. Zuko only learned rainbow firebending from the literal pillars of firebending magic (the dragons).

Even Uncle Iroh, Dragon of the West, couldn't produce blue flames!

HELP! Ok, it's not that series, but still, please?

I'm writing an Azula fanfic. Is this a good way to describe what fire bending feels like to her?

"...rush of power I feel. It’s wonderful.” And addictive...And it's a refuge. A way to scream. Like, really scream. Only, no one will ever know. No one can stop you. ... (also) it’s like whisky. That warmth flooding into you with that bitter bite of nail polish remover, that smell of nail polish remover. I might like it for the way it hurts, but not everyone does at first. The problem is, it can get you addicted to the bite."

Please tell me your thoughts!

Edit: I am so sorry for misspelling serious!

I just googled what war crimes are and this is what I was given. Guys, I don't think Azula committed war crimes.

Edit: I don't. want to apologize in the comments anymore. I'm just going to do it in advance. I'm really sorry for whatever problems you have with this.

AI Overview

A war crime is a serious violation of international humanitarian law—such as the Geneva Conventionsand the Hague Conventions—committed during an armed conflict that incurs individual criminal responsibility. [1, 2, 3]

Key Characteristics

  • Connection to Conflict: The action must have a direct nexus to an international or non-international armed conflict. [1, 2]
  • Individual Liability: Unlike state responsibility, war crimes hold individual combatants or leaders personally accountable in a court of law. [1, 2]
  • Core Principles: They often involve flouting the rules of distinction (separating combatants from civilians), proportionality, and military necessity. [1]

Common Examples

  • Violence Against People: Willful killing, torture, inhumane treatment, or taking hostages.
  • Targeting Non-Combatants: Deliberately attacking civilians, hospitals, religious sites, or cultural monuments.
  • Abuse of Combatants: Killing or wounding a soldier who has surrendered ("giving no quarter"), mistreating prisoners of war, or forcing them to fight for an opposing power.
  • Destruction and Plunder: Wanton, unjustified destruction of civilian property, pillaging, or forced deportation.
  • Prohibited Methods: Using banned weapons (such as certain chemical or biological agents) or wartime sexual violence. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

How They Are Prosecuted

War crimes can be tried in national domestic courts, hybrid international tribunals, or through the International Criminal Court (ICC) when local courts are unable or unwilling to act. They are distinct from crimes against humanity (which can happen outside of war) and genocide (which requires intent to destroy a specific group). [1, 2]

By the way, Azula probably got the go ahead from her dad to participate in the war and that's how she got the drill. But that's just my thinking.

Discussion Fixing all the bad relationships and character elements in ATLA (Serious Rewrite)

Romantic Relationships and Character Arcs

Aang and Katara

Aang and Katara remain the best pairing for each other. Their romance in the original series feels somewhat rushed, but it works well enough that no major changes are needed.

The relationship should stay largely unchanged. Aang's affection for Katara develops early, and Katara gradually realizes that her feelings are romantic, not just protective or affectionate. The story would benefit from giving the relationship a little more time to develop, but the pairing itself should not change.

Sokka and Yue

Yue's story should remain unchanged.

Suki and Jet

This pairing is better than Suki's canon pairing with Sokka because both characters lead fighting groups: Suki leads the Kyoshi Warriors, and Jet leads a bandit group. Jet's plot does not need to change. After he feels remorse and his canon arc is complete, he can meet Suki, and both can take supporting roles in the fight against Ozai. Jet also does not need to die a clichéd death. In this rewrite, Suki saves him.

Sokka and Azula

Sokka and Azula would be the primary romantic pairing of the rewrite.

At first, they appear fundamentally incompatible. Sokka is protective, compassionate, and motivated by a strong sense of duty. Azula is calculating, intimidating, politically ruthless, and raised to meet Ozai's expectations. However, their differences could produce a more compelling relationship than Sokka's canon pairing with Suki.

Sokka's distrust of Jet shows that he can tell people who are genuinely malicious from people whose circumstances have impaired their judgment. He recognizes immediately that something is wrong when Jet attacks an apparently helpless old man. His protective instincts and sense of duty make him suspicious of people who justify harming innocents by appealing to a larger cause.

Aang, by contrast, is more trusting and emotionally impressionable at this point in the story. He is not unintelligent, but he is still immature and too willing to accept Jet's presentation of himself as a hero. Sokka notices the danger earlier because he is more cautious, and because his sense of responsibility makes him pay closer attention to the consequences of other people's actions.

That same moral discernment could eventually allow Sokka to understand Azula without excusing her crimes. He would recognize that Azula is both responsible for her actions and deeply affected by abuse, political indoctrination, fear, and Ozai's conditional approval. His role would not be to "fix" Azula or undo the damage she has caused. Instead, he would challenge her worldview and offer a relationship based on honesty, accountability, and mutual care.

Azula would also require Sokka to develop greater personal agency, and as a result he would stop depending on Katara as he did in childhood.

Azula, in turn, would have to experience care that is not based on fear, political usefulness, or family obligation. Sokka would not worship her, fear her, or submit automatically to her authority. He would argue with her, expose her rationalizations, and hold her accountable. This makes him uniquely suited to challenge her, because his affection would not require him to give up his moral judgment.

Sokka's Sexism Arc

Sokka's early sexism can be kept and expanded instead of removed.

His sibling banter with Katara is already entertaining and gives his development a useful starting point. His assumptions about gender should last longer in the story, and they should be challenged through several experiences and arguments instead of being resolved in a single sparring match with Suki.

In the original Kyoshi Island episode, Suki effectively teaches Sokka that women can be skilled warriors by defeating him in combat. In this rewrite, Azula would eventually take over the main role of challenging Sokka's assumptions.

The Kyoshi Island arc would therefore need only moderate changes. Suki could remain in the story as the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, but she would no longer be the main influence on Sokka's development, and she would not be his romantic partner. Sokka could still behave dismissively toward the Kyoshi Warriors, but the lesson would not be resolved through a relationship with Suki. Instead, his attitudes would remain a recurring flaw that creates tension with Katara, the Kyoshi Warriors, and eventually Azula. Azula is the one who rebukes him, and Sokka learns that misogyny is wrong.

This would make Sokka's growth gradual and more meaningful.

Zuko and June

June would be Zuko's preferred partner.

June is not dramatically more developed than Mai or Suki in the original series, but she has one major advantage: she is older than Zuko and has extensive practical experience as a bounty hunter. She works outside the rigid hierarchy of the Fire Nation royal court, and she does not treat Zuko primarily as a prince, a political asset, or a symbol of family honor.

June would therefore give Zuko a relationship based on challenge, independence, and practical experience. She could play a role for Zuko similar to the one Katara plays for Aang: caring for him in her own way.

Zuko's Agency

Zuko's redemption requires more personal agency than the original series consistently gives him.

Iroh is an important influence, but relying too heavily on him makes Zuko's development resemble a transfer from one father figure to another. Zuko often does not fully trust Iroh, and that distrust is justified by Iroh's omissions and by the complicated history between them.

June would provide a different kind of influence. She would not act as Zuko's substitute parent or spiritual guide. She would force him to make decisions without giving him a moral framework to follow. Zuko would have to choose whether to keep pursuing the Avatar, return to the Fire Nation, confront Ozai, find his mother, or build a different life.

This would give him a stronger internal arc. Instead of merely reacting to Iroh, Ozai, Aang, or Azula, Zuko would develop ideals of his own and act on them.

Iroh's Moral Complicity

Iroh's past should be explored more honestly.

The original series presents him as wise, compassionate, and ultimately opposed to Ozai's tyranny, but it does not sufficiently confront the fact that he was once a Fire Nation general who took part in the imperial war. His transformation is meaningful, but the narrative often avoids showing the harm he caused during his military career.

This omission weakens Zuko's agency because Iroh is treated too consistently as the unquestioned moral alternative to Ozai. A stronger rewrite would show that Iroh's wisdom developed through failure, complicity, grief, and guilt, and not merely through age and personal enlightenment.

Iroh should have to acknowledge the harm he helped cause. That acknowledgment would benefit both Zuko and Azula, because it would show them that redemption is not the same as being declared innocent. A person can change and still be responsible for the past.

Azula, Ozai, Zuko, and Ursa

Azula's breakdown should be linked to both of her parents, in different ways.

Her problems with her father come from Ozai's betrayal. Azula believes that her usefulness, strength, and perfection guarantee his approval. When Ozai chooses political power over her and effectively discards her after the war, that belief proves false. Her breakdown is not simply the result of losing power. She realizes that the person whose approval her entire identity depended on never loved her unconditionally.

Sokka becomes important during this phase because he can offer Azula a kind of care that Ozai never did. He does not treat her as a weapon or a monster. Sokka, who has until now been cared for by Katara as a stand-in for their late mother, learns for the first time to care for someone else. Azula learns to accept care without interpreting it as weakness or manipulation. Both characters therefore change through the relationship.

Azula's problems with her mother, however, cannot be resolved by Sokka. Her reconciliation with Ursa has to happen as part of repairing her relationships with the rest of her family, especially her brother Zuko.

Azula should resist reconciliation, attack Zuko verbally, and accuse him of returning only because he has already won. Zuko, in turn, should refuse to respond with guilt or anger. He can accept responsibility for his own failures without accepting blame for Azula's actions, including how she frightened him as a child.

Ursa's return or reintroduction should not undo the years of damage. She must confront the fact that Azula experienced her as distant, frightened, and emotionally unavailable. Ursa may have loved both children, but Azula did not experience that love as secure or understandable. Ursa will also need to be confronted by both siblings and go through her own redemption arc.

The family's healing should therefore proceed in stages:

  1. Zuko and Azula acknowledge the damage they have done to each other.
  2. Ursa admits that her fear and favoritism contributed to Azula's isolation.
  3. Zuko rejects the idea that Azula must become harmless before she can be loved.
  4. Azula accepts the reconciliation instead of rejecting it by reflex, as years of conditioning would lead her to do.
  5. The family begins to restore trust through repeated actions, not through a single emotional conversation.

Ursa's role is not to cure Azula's instability simply by returning. Her role is to acknowledge her daughter as a person who was failed by the adults around her, and to take responsibility for repairing that relationship.

Final Summary

  • Aang and Katara: The central romantic pairing. The original story is preserved, and the romance gets slightly more development.
  • Sokka and Azula: The primary new relationship, based on accountability, mutual challenge, agency, and emotional repair.
  • Sokka and Yue: The same tragic romance as in canon, with no major plot changes.
  • Sokka and Suki: No longer romantic. Suki remains an important Kyoshi Warrior leader and ally.
  • Suki and Jet: A new pairing of two group leaders. Both take supporting roles against Ozai, and Suki saves Jet.
  • Zuko and June: A mature, challenging relationship that helps Zuko develop independent ideals and agency.
  • Zuko and Mai: Removed as the central romance, because Mai does not give Zuko the same conflict or personal challenge.
  • Azula and Ursa: A difficult family reconciliation, not a simple healing arc with her mother.
  • Zuko and Azula: A gradual sibling reconciliation, made possible by Zuko's independent growth.
  • Iroh and June: Avoided, because it risks ignoring Iroh's military past and weakening both June's independence and Zuko's agency.

Discussion What do you think is the ideal Azula redemption arc?

I don’t know what’s the right balance to combine accountability for her past crimes with psychological healing from mental illness and trauma. I feel like some community service towards the Earth Kingdom or Republic City is necessary, plus therapy and stability. Maybe a stint in the Northern Water tribe for healing, if waterbending healing extends to mental issues. I think reconciliation with Zuko and especially Ursa would be necessary. I also wonder what Azula would want to devote her intelligence and skill towards if not trying to rule, I feel like she’d want to be important in some kind of way. Or maybe just benefit from a peaceful life. Idk

What was the Spirit of the Temple trying to do to Azula?

This is something that has really bugged me a lot because the behavior of the Spirit doesn't make sense and contradicts itself heavily. On the surface it sounds like he wanted to "bring her peace and make her change her ways", sure, but how exactly was he trying to do it?

Hear me out, trying to analyze what we see: Azula falls asleep and wakes up in a dream. In that dream there's a new reality, she's on Ember Island (a place of many happy memories) surrounded by all of her friends and family. Everybody is nice to her and respects her and treat her like a daughter, a sister, etc. The scene is idilliac, but obviously it can't be real: Zuko is missing his scar, there's two guys in the back that we've never seen and the idea that Ozai could've been open and welcoming sounds very farfetched to me, and Ursa being anywhere near closed to him without being forced is the final nail in the coffin.

Still, Azula desperately wants it, it's her inner desire, and she shows it and starts to fall into the dream, at first incredolous, but over time she almost grasps on it. Then Dream Mai and Dream Ty Lee speak up and tell her that it's all obviously bullsh*t. Azula? She pushes back, she wants to stay in the dream, she wants to fall deeper into it.

But she wakes up.

Now, at this point the woman of the Temple is already freaking out, but Azula is frankly...she's calm. She just took it as a weird dream and thinking nothing of it, she's not angry or hostile or freaking out, she's just "jeez woman, calm down! Why are you pushing me out all of a sudden!"

The woman says that "the dreams didn't give her peace". She clearly wasn't hostile, so how exactly were they supposed to bring her peace? Recenter her by showing a reality of happiness that will never be? I honeslty would feel only grief at that, and considering how impossible that reality is I don't think I would ever strive for it since, again, it is literally impossible. Even then, her inner desire doesn't connect with the fact that her villainous ways come from having never been taught how to live properly in the way that would allow the desire to be, at least in part, as long as never having healed from her trauma. That's not a "feasable goal" that one could strive to, not even an ideal, it feels like...wishful thinking.

Then Azula tries to go away and is braught back to the Temple. The spirit shows her the memory of her first time firebending. And immediately tries to REWRITE IT!

Now, when something doesn't work the first time, you typically try again by changing angle, but not the general approach, right? When you're inserting the USB key into the port you flip it to check if it was the wrong side before looking to make sure that it wasn't the HDMI port instead, right? So what it means, to me, is that the way the Spirit "helps people change" is...by forging new memories that could help them feel accomplished. Something for them to hold on to, to dampen or even replace the trauma, so that no actual healing must be done.

However, Azula's mind is stronger than it looks, and it seems that her logic saves her from this by pushing away the attempt: it wasn't just a "see what could've been?" but a "here's how it went", an invasion of the mind to tamper with it.

This feeling is further reinforced by the rest of what the Spirit does: trying to push her to the brink of psychosis, trying to break her. He never shows someone actually extending a hand for her to take, just her guilt demanding "repent". So much for bringing peace...unless your peace is fabricated and doesn't care for how whole her mind is, only that she believes that she's at peace.

(There's also the reading that the Spirit would've never let her go, since he refused at first because if I'm not mistaken the Spirit talked about having "changed people" but not actually how or how they improved their lives)

Then the reveal of its form with a "this is a reflection of you, the monster that you are, for having chosen to refuse me!" again, if your goal is to give peace to someone you don't tell her something like that. Your methods are pretty poor as a therapist if you give up after "yeah, that dream was kinda weird and I don't like the way you torture me" (which if it was meant like that: my writers, that's not how mental healthcare works, and healthcare in general tbf. Please find a therapist to greenlight the next issues because that is concerning and malpractice). Unless, of course, your methods do not require the person to do actual work, just to lay down as you do your thing.

So yeah, my point is that the most sensible reading to this all thing imho is either the writers seriously not understanding how mental health works, or the Spirit wanting to "force Azula to be good" by implanting fabricated memories within her mind.
