Gen 2 The mysteries of Gligar
If there's one Mon whose design choices will always keep me up at night, it's Gligar, no debates. There's too much to unpack with this weirdo, whether it's the odd typing choice or move selections, enough to make me wonder what was in the dev's heads when making this Pokémon.
Let's start with the typing. Despite being Ground/Flying, Gligar doesn't show many attributes befitting either type. Pokedex entries from across the series like LeafGreen, HeartGold, and Y focus more on its hunting technique, described as flying toward its prey's face before stinging it with its venomous tail. Gligar is also part of the Bug egg group alongside fellow Bug-type reject Flygon (which was originally a Bug type during development of Gen 3).
They play Gligar into scorpion territory (hence the species name of FlyScorpion) with a hint of Alien's Facehuggers (as seen in early sprites dating back to June of 1999) but then choose Ground/Flying as it's type as opposed to anything involving Poison or Bug. Despite having Sand Veil as one of its abilities, arid environments are rarely discussed in its Pokedex entries, instead claiming it like hanging on cliffs to spot prey. In fact, there aren't a lot of arid areas that Gligar calls home, as it's often found more frequently in rocky areas like Route 45 in GSC and even swampy areas like Route 19 in XY and Bogskunk Cavern in BDSP, places where Poison and Bug Mon are more frequently found.
Speaking of Poison and Bug, let's get into its move set, another aspect of Gligar that makes me question Game Freak's design choices. Back in Gen 2, it primarily learned stuff like Poison Sting and Feint Attack, as well as TM moves like Sludge Bomb, Fury Cutter, and Iron Tail, with the only Ground-type move it could learn via leveling up being Sand Attack. Wing Attack was locked behind breeding, and the only damaging Ground-type move it could learn, Earthquake, required you to own a copy of Pokémon Stadium 2 on N64 and then send a special Gligar to a copy of GSC.
Heading into Sinnoh, Gligar's move set was also a bit strange, while it could learn Earthquake and Dig via TM, Gligar could learn more Rock-type moves via TM on top of Dark, Bug, and Poison moves like Night Slash, Poison Jab and X-Scissor. At least it was capable of learning Acrobatics upon evolving.
Speaking of evolving, let's discuss Gliscor. It's entries in HGSS and Legends Arceus imply it's gone from using its tail to kill prey, and moved onto using its fangs to suck blood, hence why it needs a Razor Fang to evolve. Despite this, it's totally incapable of learning Leech Life, even in games where Leech Life appears as a TM, even though it can learn other teeth-based moves like the elemental fangs, Psychic Fangs, and Crunch this way. Just like Drowzee and Dream Eater, the Pokedex lied to us again. It still can't learn much in the way of Ground and Flying moves without TMs compared to the PBD line selection, and for some reason can learn Crabhammer.
Weirdly, the one game that was most aware of Gliscor's typing was Pokemon GO, cutting back on moves like Fury Cutter and Night Slash and focusing on moves like Acrobatics and Sand Tomb, also making it incapable of learning any Poison-type moves whatsoever. I'm not sure if this was Niantic realizing the typing had no moves to really support it and so they did it themselves.
So why is Gligar a Ground/Flying Mon despite sharing more in common with Bug and Poison types? Did Game Freak realize that there were too many existing Poison types and decided to change it midway through development? Pokemon like Numel and Trapinch have had their types changed during development, so could this be the case for Gligar?
