MOD ANNOUNCEMENT Announcing Meme Mondays

Thumbnail

r/plantclinic's strength is its mission to crowdsource gardening advice, especially for houseplants.

Over the last 2+ years, we've been making some tweaks to improve the quality of submissions, so that meaningful help can be given. We have a number of auto- responders so that as many posts get an answer as possible, even if that answer is only a form response.

Earlier today, I announced the resource reply app, which can be used to share general information that is widely helpful.

One thing we lack is a way to develop as greater sense of community.

As I was going through old posts for good care guides, I saw that some of the most popular posts on this sub have been memes.

We don't allow memes in comments. Gifs are disabled, and we remove all image memes (eventually). This is because in this subreddit, no question is a stupid question. We want everyone to feel welcome posting here.

Enter Meme Monday, an automatically enforced period where meme posts are allowed.

This is NOT to be used ro circlejerk other people's mistakes or efforts, but rather a time when we can all appreciate that our path to a green thumb is developed over the wilted husks of dozens (hundreds?) Of plants

Finally, mod applications are open! Please fill one out if you have interest.

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT New subreddit resource: Resource Reply

Hello r/plantclinic!

The Problem:

The Reddit wiki/community resource tools still suck. But we get tons of new posts where the fix to the problem is well-plowed ground - lack of light, overwatering, mushrooms, omg what is this fluffy white stuff ask over my plant... you know the drill. People don't know what they don't know.

The Solution:

One of the mods over at r/CapitalOne has developed a VERY useful tool for letting any commenter reply to a post with a link to an FAQ-type post. It's called Reply With Resource, and I've posted a couple of comments to this post so you can see how the replies look when you use it. Feel free to try it for yourself here.

How to use it:

User Instructions

To summon the app and make it comment a resource on a post or comment:

Locate the context menu for the post or comment you want to reply to. The button for this typically looks like three dots ("...").

Scroll down to "Reply with resource."

Select a resource via its title in the drop-down.

Choose whether or not you want to pin the resource to the post. In some cases, this option may not be available.

Click OK. That's it!

If you wish to delete the comment (for example, if you accidentally selected the wrong resource), simply comment "!delete" (without quotes).

Our auto-responders can still be summoned using the commands here; this is just another option.

A Request:

Right now, I've built out the app with a few very helpful posts from the history of r/plantclinic, as well as some of our existing auto-responders. I'd love to have more high quality posts under the care guide flair to populate the app with.

I've had to set the flair for Care Guides to moderator only, because it was being exclusively used to request case guides rather than write them. Users who wish to write care guides may request permission to access the flair, or request moderators adjust their flair for them.

Existing resources can be nominated for addition in the comments here, or via modmail:

Subject: Reply With Resource Addition

The URL of the post you want linked to

A brief description of what information it provides

A proposed short description for the menu.

I'm genuinely hopeful that this will help point people to high-quality resources.

Pest Related Clusters of bugs along stems of ivy?

Thumbnail

Hi, I need help figuring out what's wrong with my partners ivy plant. The ends of basically every stem is filled with clusters of bugs. The leaves seem fine and the plant doesn't seem to be unhealthy in any way (so I don't think it's thrips) but the bugs are nasty, so does anyone know why they have appeared and if we can get rid of them?

The plant is in a northeast facing window (about 10 hours of sunlight). It gets water about 2 times a week and the window hasn't been opened since the plant was bought (so no bugs could have just flown in and landed on it).

Thanks in advance!

Houseplant Who is she and why is she growing tentacles for Halloween? šŸŽƒ

I won this plant a year ago at a baby shower and it had no identifying info. She lives in a window where she gets low to moderate light 3-4 hours a day. Her pot has drainage. I water maybe every other day if her soil looks dry. She started sending out these tentacles a few weeks ago and I want to know more about her. I also would love advice about repotting as I’ve never done that before and it might be time. Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who provided advice for my challenge a year ago.
I learnt the importance of the intensity of day light plays a crucial role in the life of this specific plant.

So I decided to get it on my terrace over the course of the summer and here we go.
I could not ask for more.
My thanks go to this community and especially to [u/that-one-plant-guy](u/that-one-plant-guy)

Houseplant Plant Arrived like This

Ordered a Sparkling Sarah Aglaonema from Home Depot, and she arrived today with multiple cut ā€œstalksā€ and some bright green round things (a treatment or fertilizer maybe?) in the dirt.

This doesn’t look healthy to me, though the leaves looked good when I checked. Currently isolating her from my other plants. She will be getting indirect light from a west-facing window. Have not watered her yet, and I plan to repot her in a chunky soil mix for drainage.

Is this a healthy plant? Any advice would be a big help, as I’m still new to houseplant caregiving! Thanks!

Outdoor Snapdragon - over or under watered?

Post image
• Upvotes

Would love advice for my snapdragon. I just got the plant on Friday and it looked lush and healthy. I didn’t water it the first few days I had it because the soil seemed moist enough. I repotted it on tuesday, and by then it had started to droop. I moved it to a sunnier spot and gave it water, since the soil was dry. It’s only gotten sadder looking since then.

It’s been outside the whole time. I’m in NC, so highs in the 80s, lows in the 60s, no rain. Any suggestions?

Houseplant ZZ Plant losing stalks but growing flowers

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I have a ZZ plant who is gradually yellowing stalks and losing them without growing new ones. You can see all of the stumps from how bushy she used to be and where it is now.

It’s planted in Fox Farms Ocean Forest with pumice, around a 4:1 ratio. Currently sits in a south facing window in SoCal. I used to water every week, then dialed it back to once a month, now bumping back up to every two weeks over the past few months.

The stalks that are dying are firm but wrinkled. Nothing is mushy or seems rotted. I can see the shoots of new stalks coming up but they haven’t developed beyond where they are for a few weeks. The plant grew a flower but then didn’t seem to improve its health.

At a bit of a loss on what to do here. Could this be a nutrient deficiency or soil pH issue? Temperature or humidity? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Houseplant Indoor hibiscus trouble

Post image

I inherited this plant when I started working a new job a couple weeks ago (unsure of the actual age of the plant).

It is planted in a pot with a place you can put water into a hole... I was told it was getting watered once a month.

It sits in an East facing window and gets a lot of natural light. It is on the second floor of. Building and it gets quite hot up there. Now that the heat is on it is getting heat from the vent that is right beside it.

Is there any chance of reviving it?? The leaves are all crunchy...

Pest Related White Spots

I went through and inspected all my plants and a few had small white dots on them and I assumed were mealy bugs. They weren’t covered with them but there was a cluster of them on one plant. I can’t see any bugs but only white spots. A few plants were small and cheap so I set them outside to maybe just toss. I used alcohol on a couple to wipe the spots away. This hibiscus though has a smaller number of spots so I don’t want to give up on it. I can’t see a bug but am I being paranoid and terrified thinking any white spot is a mealy bug, is it just dust/debris or is it really mealy bugs?

If so, can I spray them with alcohol/water 50/50 or do I need to go leaf by leaf with a cotton swab?

I see the white dots and have already tried to treat with neem oil. My leaves are folding, I already cut off the leaves with a lot of dark patches. There are still new leaves shooting up but I’m so afraid. My fiddle leaf fog seems to be declining too.
It’s in a south facing window but not over exposed to light. Same distilled water schedule.

Monstera Advise please

Does anyone know what this browning is in my monstera leaves? Could it be due to using Silicon powder in the water, along with Superthrive grow fertilizer?
My monsteras get sunlight and/or grow lights for 12 hours each day.
I water when they are almost dry. I water until it comes out of the bottom. Foxfarm soil with extra perlite and orchid bark added. They are in plastic pots with good drainage, which is inside a decorative pot that has pebbles in the bottom.

Houseplant My Ctenanthe Burle marxii leaves are curling, is that normal?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, I’ve had my Ctenanthe burle-marxii for about 3 months now, and around a month ago, I started noticing that some of its leaves were curling and bending instead of staying straight and flat like they used to.
I’m wondering if this could be related to the weather or the watering. It’s been getting colder where I live, especially at night, and we haven’t been getting much sunlight lately. My plant stays indoors and receives indirect natural light throughout the day.
I only water it when the soil starts to dry, but it still stays consistently moist. Recently, I noticed some water collecting underneath its nursery pot, even though it has drainage holes. I removed the excess water and have been trying to let the soil dry out a little.
The leaves still look pretty green and healthy overall, but some are noticeably curling, and I’m worried it might be an early sign of stress.
Could this be caused by cold temperatures, insufficient light, or maybe too much moisture in the soil? Should I let it dry out more between waterings? And also would anyone recommend to use a fertilizer?
Any advice would be really appreciated

Monstera Help

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

This is a monstera mint that I’ve had for a bit now. It seemed like it started with thrips so it has been in my bathroom isolated for the entire month of September- now ( October 15). I wasn’t too sure when would be safe to take it out of seg and into gen pop again. I treated it with food grade diatomaceous earth on the soil, and sprayed in rotation of alcohol, neem oil, and captain jacks dead bug brew.

I no longer see any thrips on it- but I’m noticing these brown soft spots on the leaf below the new growth.

Does this look like thrip damage? Or something else? Should I cut it off even though it’s not the top growth? The new growth leaf is very pale and had brown crispy tips. (I assumed from being in isolation for so long, with the use of a plant light)

Looking for advice and general thoughts on how to best care for this or prune it to get it back to healthy so I don’t have to toss it 😭

ALSO if anyone has advice on how to return plants back to gen pop after pests! I’m having trust issues

I haven’t been watering this a ton since it’s been in my bathroom with the humidity of showers. The soil at the moment is damp

Houseplant What's wrong with my clusia?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! This is my third clusia, I killed the other ones by watering them too much and I learned the lesson...

I bought this clusia months ago and since then it has been growing beautifully. But suddenly it has started to bend and the leaves aren't as turgent as before.

I haven't changed anything, it's placed near a south facing window and I water it SO carefully...

The two firsts photos has been taken right now and the rest are from the past months.

Any advice?

Houseplant Pilea

🌱 My plant

A pilea that I have had for more than one, I would say, and that is in a normally suitable substrate mixture; it has grown well!

šŸ’¦ Watering and care

I used to water it with a drench about every week or more when it was hot, now I’m waiting for it to sag down a bit. (pot with holes)

I repotted it in the spring with slow-release fertilizer.

ā˜€ļø Brightness

It is located behind a window, so there is quite a lot of light.

😟 The issue encountered

For the past one or two weeks, her leaves have been turning pale and getting brown spots. I feel like it’s mostly the old leaves.

One of the affected leaves has small blisters (I don’t know if it will be very visible in the photo)

Also, I had thrips on other plants, but I didn’t find anything on this one.

Thank you in advance!

My dracaena’s leaves have been super droopy (photo 1).

Photo 2 attached to show level of sunlight. Recently repotted this plant into a slightly bigger pot (shown in photos 1-2), used generic potting soil.

Photos 3-5 show the roots before I repotted into the present pot.

I water sparingly only after the soil is thoroughly dried out. Any help is appreciated!

A week or two ago, i noticed my monstera got root. So, I trimmed the infected roots, put her in a quick hyrdogen peroxide soak, and into water to propagate so I can clearly see her progress. And yet, she is mushy AGAIN. This always happens to me when my plants get root rot and i have no idea what I do wrong. No matter how much I trim, it always come back. Now the stem is slightly mushy and im not sure how to save her. Please help!

Light: indoors, indirect lighting.

Houseplant Orchid shedding flowers and seems to not doing well!

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I've been taking care of this orchid for about 3 weeks now. I'm pet sitting for a friend for a month at their house and to water their orchid and they told me to follow the instructions on the card that came, which said add 3 ice cubes once a week. I've been doing that and after the first week, there was a flower that fell off. Then the second week even more. And now we are near the 3rd week and if you look at the pictures, it's not looking good at all. 😭

I included a photo with the size of ice cubes I have been using. They are on the smaller size so I've been using 4 cubes that size weekly.

The pot sits next to the front door and gets little to no direct sunlight due to the front patio roof but tons of ambient/reflective sun all throughout the day.

I'm unable to tell if it has a drainage system. There IS an inner plastic pot I see but I cannot remove it at all! I stuck a screwdriver between the inner and outer pot and got some pliers in there and still can't pull it out! Last picture shows some inner pot deformation. Are some inner pots just not meant to be removed?

Is what is happening due to underwatering? Overwatering? Too much/not enough sun? What do you guys recommend? šŸ„ŗšŸ™

Had no idea flowers can be so stressful! šŸ¤•

Photos:

  1. whole setup
  2. ice cube size (I put 4 of them in the pot every 7 days)
  3. roots
  4. more roots
  5. even more roots
  6. impossible to remove inner pot with some prying and plier damage

Edit: The last time I watered it with 4 of those small ice cubes was 1 day ago.

I got this aloe a couple weeks ago and I just noticed some brown splotches that definitely weren’t there before. It’s been getting 10-12 hours of light a day, I give it about 1 oz of water every week, and the pot has drainage. Is there anything I should do?

Cactus/Succulent Is this guy cooked?

Edit: sorry i only posted the healthy mom, the problematic one is in a reply to a comment

Hi everyone, this hedgehog aloe isn’t doing well. For background, i propagated as a pup and it was growing steadily in a south/southwest facing window throughout the summer. The tendrils looked etiolated as they were getting long and spindly so I thought it could be lack of light, but the Mom was in a similar setup and is thriving. I thought overwatering was the issue so i let it be for a bit, now i think that was detrimental and it has dried up. The tendrils seem empty (flat to the touch) and the soil was fully dried out. I was giving a good soak biweekly, watering til water dripped from the bottom but not letting it gather in the plate it’s sitting on.

Anyways, you think he’s a goner or any suggestions on nursing? First pic is the problem child, mom in second. They get similar light and watering.

Appreciate the help.
