Bit Annoyed Fuchsia shouldn't be pronounced fyoosha (hear me out)

I'm the only person I've ever met who cares about this, so it's the epitome of a pet peeve.

I know "fyoosha" is the only pronunciation recognised in dictionaries. But it's wrong!

It presumably comes from someone at some point misreading "chs" as "sch" which would be pronounced "sh" in German. But the letters are in the other order, "chs" should sound like "ks". If you're ok with "fyoosha" you're not in a position to criticise anyone for pronouncing "ask" as "aks"!

Fuchsia is named after someone called Leonhart Fuchs. It's common in botany to name plants after someone's surname + "ia", e.g.

- Anders Dahl + "ia" = dahlia

- Pierre Magnol + "ia" = magnolia

The German name Fuchs rhymes with "books", so Fuchsia should rhyme with "books-ia". It's meant to honour a man called Fuchs, not Fyoosh.

Bit Annoyed I hate that people in Mexico (my home country) mock me for "wanting to be American" but like bro.. I am American?

I was raised in the US and Mexican-Americans get so much hate in Mexico for "wanting to be American so bad"

You cannot say anything good about the country because "why are you defending the gringos? you think you're American too?"

Like wtf, yes? I am American? why is this concept so hard to understand in Mexico?

Bit Annoyed When the protective dad gives the "if you end up hurting my daughter..." heads up for the new boyfriend

Often portrayed in fiction, highly likely happens IRL as well.

Comes off as disrespectful. You meet someone new, and then immediately tell them how you would feel about them IF they happened to be an asshole?

Well, nice to meet you too. Unfortunately I do not have any comparable prejudices to share right now about you.

Fairly Annoyed Bad emphatic vowel lengthening, i.e. the drawing out of vowels to emphasize the word. Ex: "I'm homeeeee!" vs. "I'm hoooome!"

"I hateeee when people do that!" The E is silent. The vowel you are extending is the A. Consider "I haaaate when people do that!" In English, multiple Es create a long E pronounciation, i.e. HAY-tee.

"I'm homeee!" vs. "I'm hooome!" HOME-ee

"That truck is bigggg" vs. "biiiig!"

Etc.

Ultra Annoyed When other drivers gain on you in the passing lane and don’t give you a chance to move over, so they swerve in front of the car that you had just passed before you get the chance to move back into the right lane

• Upvotes

This is essentially what happens:

  1. You gain on a slower vehicle. (This can happen even when you’re going the speed limit because a lot of people seem to think it’s okay to drive at about half the speed limit or less.)

  2. You get over into the passing lane (left).

  3. You start to pass them.

  4. Someone starts gaining on you in the same lane (the passing/left lane)… because there is always someone who has to go faster.

  5. You pass the slower vehicle in the right lane, but you don’t get over immediately because proper safety etiquette involves making sure it’s safe to get over, and basically seeing the vehicle in the other lane clearly out of your mirrors before getting back over in front of them.

  6. The vehicle gaining on you in the passing/left lane gets close enough to you for their behavior to be considered tailgating, and they immediately start to swerve over into the right lane when they are barely a single car space ahead of the vehicle that is driving slower than both of you.

I promise you… nothing is that serious. In any situation (emergency or not), you can wait a few extra seconds (barely even that) to give someone else in the passing lane a chance to get back over. They are watching you, they are watching the other vehicle, and they are using their mirrors; more often than not, they do intend to get back over into the right lane. This reckless behavior is unacceptable, and it doesn’t matter what your circumstances are.

Some people don’t just jump back over; they wait until there’s a safe space between their vehicle and the other one that they passed. If you paid attention during your driving test, you would know that. Most of the time, the people who gain on a passing vehicle and abruptly swerve in front of another one in the right lane aren’t even using their turn signals.

Bit Annoyed People who actually think animals are better than humans

As an animal lover and a veterinarian who has worked with animals ranging from fish to elephants.

Animals are just as evil as we are. Nature is brutal, greedy, rapey, and constantly torturing others for their own benefit.

Also they don’t just kill for food. Dogs absolutely love squeaky toys because that’s the sound of rodents dying.

The only reason humans are destroying the world is because we are more powerful than any animal and nobody can stop us except for natural forces like volcanoes and earthquakes. Diseases also keep us down but we have cured a lot of them. We broke the game and we are basically running on cheat codes. The balance is broken because nobody can keep us in check.

Any other animal would have done the same if they were put in our position. The only reason they don’t, is because they can’t.

The only reason nature seems peaceful, balanced, and harmonious from the outside is because all the death and destruction is hidden away and recycled back into the ecosystem. The entire system of evolution relies on the weak being culled and only leaving the strong. Cancer and chronic diseases are not a problem in nature because they just get killed by a predator, then a younger animal replaces them. The illusion of health and harmony is built on blood.

Wild animals constantly live in PTSD, prey animals literally die when they are too stressed.

Only domesticated animals live such blissful lives.

If humans didn’t exist, another species would eventually dominate the world and commit the same crimes. Some animals are better than others, for example bonobos would be less violent than chimps, but in general the world is a violent and a cruel place where the weak is eaten alive, females are raped, babies are basically chicken nuggets, and anything you do to promote your self-interest is good.

The only difference is that humans feel guilt, although some don’t.

I love animals for what they are. Yet it’s still our responsibility to protect them and the ecosystem.

Fairly Annoyed When people act like forgiveness is owed in situations involving trauma or a lot of hurt

Yes, there are situations where holding a grudge is silly like with minor disagreements or a misunderstanding. However, in situations involving trauma and harm to others, you cannot expect someone to forgive. For example, with the discourse surrounding Christa Pike, I’ve seen some people saying the family of the victim should forgive her or that they’re wrong to hate her. She brutally murdered someone’s daughter, so the family of the victim doesn’t owe her forgiveness, and they have every right to feel how they do about her.

There was another time where my friend’s ex cheated on him and her friend and sister were both texting him that he needs to find it in his heart to forgive her shortly after the break up. The situation was fresh and he was hurt, and rather than giving him space she had people close to her demand that he forgive her, even though it’s his right to end the relationship.

Actions have consequences, and if you cause someone a great deal of hurt or trauma, bridges being burned or never being forgiven is just a cross you have to bear. Telling someone that they must forgive a person who caused them hurt or trauma is essentially telling them how to feel, which generally no one’s place to do.

Bit Annoyed Those types of Quora questions

“My 17 year old son has a bedtime of 8:00. Everything he does on his phone is monitored by me. I don’t let him out of the house without me present. I don’t let him watch TV, and if I do, he gets 30 minutes a day and that’s it. I make him do chores around the house 24/7 and he has no social life. So why doesn’t he like me? Am I failing as a parent?”

Seriously? Are you fucking for real?

Fairly Annoyed When parents expect me to parent their child

I work in retail and parents come in all the time and try to outsource their parenting to me:

“Ok Bubby you broke this, now this nice gentlemen is going to charge you for it and it’s coming out of YOUR allowance!”

child crying loud and obnoxiously

“Ma’am I’m not charging you for this item. I’m just an employee here and I have no stake in this at all. I’m going to damage it out per procedure it’s really not a big deal”

“No. My child broke it and he needs to be taught that you need to be careful so he’s paying for this..” as they have to raise their voice so I can hear them over the crying child…

Look I’m not charging your child for a broken item, I’m not going to tell them that it’s expensive so they shouldn’t buy it, I’m not going to (this one is my favorite) tell them if they keep throwing a tantrum that they can’t buy an item they want, hell as much as it annoys me I’m not going to tell them to stop running around the store… control your child. Parent your child.

Bonus points if their “child” is barely younger than me, like smh

Fairly Annoyed “You’re saying tea tea” (& “caffe latté” snobs)

I hateeee when people (specifically Americans, but then again I’ve only gotten this response from Americans) give me this response to me saying “chai tea.”

I would like to clarify that yes, I understand chai MEANS tea in many other languages. However, in the English language, we already have a word for tea, so therefore chai refers to the specific type. This is pretty obvious to me and I don’t think I should need to explain it. I think most people understand this, YET some people still feel the need to respond with this “fun fact” every time someone says it. At this point I think everyone who’s ever been on the internet has heard this phrase repeated to death, so I promise you don’t need to give me this whole spiel every time “chai tea” is said.

TL;DR: chai has its own meaning as a specific tea in the US at the very least, and I believe it’s the same for other majority English speaking countries (correct me if I’m wrong.) Saying Chai tea is fine.

ON A SIMILAR NOTE:

Let me preface this: I’m a barista, I do not care at all if you say latte or caffe latte. I won’t police your language. HOWEVER, there is a certain subset of people (smaller than the chai tea people but still present nonetheless) who get snobby about people who say “latte” instead of caffe latte. Again these people are usually American, not Italian; the Italians are fine lol.

Yes, latte = milk in Italy, but in English we have a word for milk!!! Do not get mad at me for saying latte because it has its own meaning here. In Italian you have to specify caffe latte because again, latte is just milk, but there’s no reason to do that in English and you are an obnoxious snob for trying to “correct” anyone who says latte, at least in America. In Italy that’s fair game, but I’ve seen this happen one too many times.

TL;DR: latte = milk in Italian so specifying caffe latte is necessary in Italy. We already have a word for milk in English, and latte is widely understood at the correct term for the espresso based beverage, so do not correct someone who says latte with “you’re just saying milk/it’s caffe latte”

Fairly Annoyed When people try to explain something you already understand

It's so annoying when you ask a question or mention something and someone launches into a detailed explanation you definitely don't need. Like when I ask if they've seen a specific movie and they start telling me the entire plot. I'm just looking for a yes or no. You don't need to give me a Wikipedia entry. Just assume I have some basic understanding.

Ultra Annoyed Fake celebrity death announcements are not funny. Never have been. It's one of the worst forms of click bait!

Rowan Atkinson is alive. Anything you see saying otherwise today, is a hoax.

I opened my phone this morning, and the first SM notification I got was a grayscale picture of comedian Rowan Atkinson with the caption of his birth year to 2026, and the caption is a list of his accomplishments, and the very bottom of the caption... says happy birthday

I'm pretty sure the only reason this showed up in my notifications is because the picture and caption was click bait.

This nonsense is not funny! 😡

These people have family and friends too.

It's completely inconsiderate to spread fake unfounded death announcements about people, just for the clicks.

I know people do anything for clicks, but it's truly disgusting !

In my opinion fake death announcements is among the worst of the worst low hanging fruits to drive traffic to your channel.

How would a screaming baby at 3am solve anything? All you’re doing is bringing a child into a dysfunctional relationship, where they could end up being blamed for problems they never caused.

Fairly Annoyed People who leave grocery items on shelves where they don’t belong because they’re too lazy to go put it back where they found them

it always irritates me whenever i go to a grocery store (for some reason it’s always costco in my experience) and see a random item that obviously doesn’t belong on the shelf it’s on because someone changed their mind and was too lazy to put back the item where they found it

like are you so lazy to the point where you put the roast chicken in the damn juice aisle when the hot food area where you got the chicken is literally less than 20 feet away

Bit Annoyed When people don't realize how long seconds are

When people use seconds as a measurement of time and really underestimate how long that is.

Someone said they got honked at when the light turned green and complained saying it had only been green for 10 seconds until they went.

Man I'd honk after 3 seconds. Ten seconds is such a long time in that situation.

Fairly Annoyed Just found all the all the interview feedback I've been giving candidates for the last 5 years has all been getting thrown in the trash by HR because they're scared of law suits.

• Upvotes

I put real thought into those.. with the hope that the feedback would help candidates. But it turns out that HR just deletes them and weren't telling me. So if you're a candidate who's been interviewed and you wonder why you never get any feedback, that's probably why.

Fairly Annoyed People who ask "Are you mad?" until you ACTUALLY get irritated, and then go "See! I knew it!"

Maybe I’m just cursed with a naturally hostile resting face, but this makes me feel like I’m genuinely losing my mind.

I will be sitting on the couch or at my desk, minding my own business, completely neutral. Literally just thinking about what to make for dinner or staring into the void. And someone—usually a coworker or my roommate—will hit me with: "Are you okay? Are you mad at me?"

I always give a polite, normal response: "No, not at all, just tired/zoning out." But they never believe it. They stare at me with this suspicious squint and ask again ten minutes later: "Are you sure? You seem off." By the fourth time they ask, my patience is completely drained, so I finally snap and say, "I told you three times I’m fine, please drop it!"

And without fail, they hit me with that smug, vindicated look: "Aha! See? I knew you were pissed off teh whole time!"

No, you absolute clown. I was completely at peace until you spent forty minutes interrogating me into an existential rage. It’s like people manufacture an issue out of thin air just so they can be right about it.

Does anyone else deal with this or am I just radiating invisible hostility?

Fairly Annoyed “I’m lactose”

When people say “I’m lactose” instead of saying “I’m lactose intolerant”. Lactose is a sugar found in milk and dairy products. So by saying “I’m lactose” they’re saying “I’m sugar found in milk”. Just so annoying. Finish the sentence! It’s not hard.

Bit Annoyed "Who cares?"/"Nobody cares."

99% of the time I see anyone say either of these, it's in direct response to someone who just said they cared.

I understand they're trying to be passive aggressive (or something along those lines), but this just doesn't work for me. It's such a nothingburger statement that it annoys me. So incredibly unwitty that it's pointless to ever say. I feel like "And what do the adults think?" fits the bill so much better.

Bit Annoyed “You’ve never had real ______ unless you visited ______. You’ve never had the good stuff.”

I hate it when I’m having a conversation with someone, and mention a food I like. Usually just a meal I like to get at a restaurant or something on the go, and the other person immediately responds with something along the lines of “oh you like shrimp scampi? Well you’ve never had real shrimp scampi unless you’ve been to this restaurant that’s over 9 hours away by car. They have the best shrimp scampi, and they cook it a certain way that makes the shrimp and the pasta tasty.” In my mind I’m like ok? And? I didn’t say I like shrimp scampi for you to go on a rant and indirectly say that my favorite place to get shrimp scampi sucks because you don’t like my preference. I understand that people are passionate about food, because I am too, but there isn’t any need to directly or indirectly claim that a food sucks just because it isn’t from your favorite place, hometown, etc.

I can also apply this to a more universal food like pizza. Personally, I like a thick crust pizza. Something like a Sicilian or a Detroit style. But every time I bring that up to anyone who likes NY style, all of the sudden I’ve never had good pizza, despite the fact that I have visited NYC multiple times trying about 10 different pizza shops, of which I only seriously liked about 3.

This is just something that is a bit annoying, but I’m wondering if anyone shares the same sentiment as me.

Bit Annoyed When people think you're good with computers just because you are good at Googling stuff

Too many people assume I am good with computers and can fix their stuff simply because I know how to find solutions on Google. That is all I can do, I have no idea how any of the hardware or software works and have no interest in it whatsoever, unlike what people seem to think. I just want the thing to work.
