Community / Casual Discussion Appreciation post: Different book sizes.

I don't mean to sound snobbish but I really am appreciative of the sizes of books by some publishers. To me, they feel easier to grip, esp one handed. Unlike others (mostly Western and UK publishers) that are too wide and big.

Understandably it could just boil down to most books from the US/UK are chonky reads with 800-1000 pages while Asian books are 200-500 pages.

But still though. Esp for the bookshop cat book. The size just fits my hand right. ☺️ Which helps when I get cramps and/or feel nerve pain.

Do you have a fave book that you bought a physical copy just for the size/looks?

Finally went to the NBS Warehouse Sale sa GH. Super nakaka-overwhelm lang dahil sa dami ng books, you really have to look around for good titles that interests you. Also saw lots of Collins classics and books of the same genre + mga mystery/romance (take note lang na most of the titles are not popular but there are still a lot of good ones)

All these for 300, What's ur haul? <3

Community / Casual Discussion Finding time to move and to read.

Post image
23 Upvotes

I'm in my mid-40s, and luckily di pa ako diabetic. Lol. I heard a health tip that you can avoid blood glucose spikes daw if you move, even for just 10 minutes, after every meal. (Ang reason being, muscle will take in the excess glucose sa blood stream and store them sa muscle, preferable movements are those that engage and contract the leg muscle kasi malaking muscle group sila.)

So, since March or April of this year, I've been taking the stairs up and down after my lunch.

Later on, I paired it with reading. Or rather stacked it pala. I usually read for a good 10 to 20 minutes right after using the staircase. Tapos tahimik pa sa fire exit unlike sa loob ng office. Sometimes mainit/humid, most of the time oks naman, sanayan. Na-enjoy ko pa rin magbasa.

Seeking Recs Recommendations please based on my current read and TBR. I am currently reading Piranesi by Susanna Clark.

I am currently reading Piranesi and at 60%, and my TBR includes Pierce Brown’s Red Rising, Golden Son, Morning Star, Crime and Punishment, Brothers K by Fyodor Dostoevsky and Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. I am also halfway through atomic habits by James Clear and started reading Deep work by Cal Newport already (Self help TBR includes Essentialism by Greg Mckeown, Psycho Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, 48 Laws of Power and Mastery by Robert Greene). I am seeking book recs based on my Current Read, TBR and interest or better yet please suggest a book that changed anything in your life in any way possible, I am a sucker for these kinds of reads right now. I used to listen to book recommendations from Booktok, Youtube and Facebook Reels but I am eliminating these socials slowly.

I am 33, M, started into reading 2 months ago and will continue to do so to reduce or eliminate doomscrolling and brain rot(so to say) and to regain my attention span. Thanks in Advance! Thanks!

Community / Casual Discussion Brandnew book with curved spine

Post image
23 Upvotes

For context, I sell books and this is one of the books I sold recently, IT by Stephen King Paperback. My buyer complained kasi curved yung spine ng book so meaning nabasa na raw yung book and not brandnew. But it is brandnew and it came from book outlet. Ilang copies na ng IT nabenta ko and some of them have curved spine talaga, which I did not think would be a big deal given the thickness of the book (one of thickest book I ever held). Buyer insisted na hindi brandnew ang book and I already explained that multiple factors may cause the book to warp. I offered return/refund multiple times which the buyer rejected.

Now, I'm confused if anyone ever experienced receiving a brandnew book with slightly curved spine?

Finished Reading The Buffalo Hunter Hunter

Post image

First Stephen Graham Jones book I’ve read. It's a revenge story centered on the massacre of the Blackfeet tribe that really shows the brutal horrors of colonization and how easily an entire community can be erased from history.

I absolutely loved how brutal Good Stab was and how cunning he proved to be when he exacted his revenge. It’s definitely a strong, heavy hitting book. I just don't know how to feel about the ending.

Sa mga nakabasa na nito, ano thoughts niyo?

Current Read Dostoevsky's ''The Brothers Karamazov''

Post image
29 Upvotes

It was my first time reading a book written by Dostoevsky. inuna ko kasi basahin at tapusin yung Metamorphosis by Kafka. I've already started with his book ''The Brothers Karamazov'' when I found out na hindi pala dapat yun ang inuna ko and that it should actually be the last one since yun yung last book nya na sinulat before he died (if I'm not mistaken).

I agree when someone said na reading Dostoevsky's book felt like encountering a drunk man on the street tapos he suddenly started yapping about life. Literally, that's how I felt like while reading his book. I also kinda had a hard time digesting what he's saying nung first few pages and was a little bit lost at first but as I read it more, the more na mas naiintindihan ko sya and nap-picture out in my mind better. It took me quite a while before I realize na it's being narrated by a person who isn't involved in the actual story, parang nosy neighbor lang ganun. HAHGHAAHHAHAHAHA

Hindi ko pa sya natatapos pero I'm half-way through na. I have this thought na ''where tf is this story going'' which keeps me from wanting to finish the book so I guess it's kind of a good thing?

Book Collection What are your thoughts on book designs?

Post image
56 Upvotes

I'm kind of restarting my book collection this year and really trying to be more intentional with the books I buy (the covers, designs, publishers, translations, etc) and honestly a little overwhelmed as well with so many options! (Especially with the classics)

I mainly want to collect paperbacks for the ease of reading but so many things to consider!

So we got:

  1. Sprayed edges

  2. French flaps

  3. Deckled edges

  4. Stepback cover

Honestly, I dont mind sprayed edges but I wont be going out of my way to collect them.

Hot take, I kind of hate deckled edges, they just look so messy! But I realized for some translations and pretty covers, I got no choice (looking at you Emily Wilson and the orange penguin classics).

For the french flaps and stepback cover, I am mostly neutral but they're both a little awkward.

Oh, and then we have the UK vs US edition - UK edition def has prettier covers but I usually prefer the US since they are more floppy. (Floppy books are the best, change my mind)

How about you guys? Are you as intentional? Any violent opinions or am I overthinking this?

Community / Casual Discussion Thoughts on buying annotated books?

I've seen a lot of good deals on books, but some of them have already been annotated with markings and highlighters. What are your thoughts on purchasing those kinds of books? I mostly buy secondhand that's why

Saw some comments on TikTok saying na it feels like a comment section daw lol, wdyt?

Starting the spooky season with Kiss, Slay, Replay. I'm loving the book so far. Rachel Harrison did the time loop well in this novel. Most of these books were obtained through my Aardvark subscription. I'll probably end it with the third Talisman novel.

Community / Casual Discussion I hate how I prejudge books from Wattpad authors before reading them huhu

I can't even tell you how many wattpad stories I've read during highschool and a bit in college back when it was still at the height without needing to pay to access anything.

Because of NBS's book sale today, I went to a branch and I saw one displayed from a wattpad author. I took a chance and purchased it since, in my whole collection of some 70 books, I have never owned a local one. I've always purchased international books since I go off of suggestions from Jack Edwards and The Book Leo.

Honestly? I hate to admit it, but I purchased the book because it was around about the same pricing as international books and I based the quality off of that HUHU.

I am now scared to read it fearing it might be cringe. Please don't bash or hate on me this is literally new territory for me huhu. And it's been a while since I've read anything with Filipino as the main language (not from Luzon).

Do you guys carry the same prejudice or is it just me? Huhuhu

Book Adaptations Verity book versus Movie Adaptation. Team Letter or Team Manuscript?

Hi, who has read and watched *Verity* already? Tbh, I was so disappointed with the movie. Yeah, I’m fully aware that movies more often than not don’t really do justice to the book. Idk why; I just expected too much from the movie adaptation.

Anyway, I’m just curious... Who’s Team Letter, and who’s Team Manuscript here?

I wanna know your insights and why.

Book Review Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" is a genius!

Post image
70 Upvotes

Bought this book for my birthday because I've been desperate to read it after finishing "1984". This is Harper Perennial's Olive Edition.

Huxley warned us decades ago of how entertainment can be much more dangerous as it can make a blindeye from our reality. It's on-full dopamine in the world setting — lust and laugh without the presence of emotion such as empathy. Tho, I don't wanna debate between Huxley vs. Orwell kasi both ideas are plausible.

What struck me the most is, "The religious sentiment will compensate us for all our losses. But there aren't any losses to compensate; religious sentiment is superfluous. And why should we go hunting for a substitute for youthful desires, when youthful desires never fail?" (I'm not religious, but that line had me in deep thoughts).

We believe in things because one has been conditioned to believe them. That is what keeps us on merely knowing the facade rather than what's behind it.

I enjoyed this book till the end! I wanna read more dystopian books :))

Bookstores My NBS vending machine experience!

Thumbnail

1.1k Upvotes

Decided to give the 24/7 NBS vending machine a try and here’s my overall experience:
- I work odd hours so the accessibility is a plus talaga, I went there during midnight so walang tao and ‘di ako napressure pumili ng books
- they have an open shelf filled with bookToks, classics, YA fiction, and even the books available in the vending machine
- lots of chairs in the area, although I think they’re for the Type A coffee shop customers (?) so you can read the books there for free! The books look brand new and ang daming selection! I can see myself spending the whole day there tbh hahaha
- the only downside is that they only take QRPh - no terminal for your cards, no cash, and oh, they don’t dispense receipts din
- lastly, no markup sa prices I’ve seen sa website nila. not sure actually sa prices nila sa actual NBS stores so I can’t confirm - I added photos of they price para you can compare

Looking forward to their stock refresh!
