Use this thread to share events in the coming week throughout the region. This is a scheduled post and a new one will come up on Sundays. Other local subreddits have weekly posts as well, including r/Oshawa and r/Whitby. The same rules apply, but cross-posting is fine. Additional events may be found in the Regional Calendar or at DurhamRegion.com. Please feel free to highlight any of these in the comments below. Please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Both free and paid events are allowed
  • If tickets are required, please include a link; these may require manual approval due to spam filters, but we'll approve them!
  • Garage sales and group sales are allowed, but not single item sales. Please do not share someone else's garage sale or their address without permission.
  • Religious and political events are allowed only if they are welcoming and inclusive to the entire community.

We are aware of the following farmer's markets operating in the region for summer 2026. Please use modmail to notify the mods of errors or any we have missed:

Mr. Bunny Ears

While driving south down Simcoe street a couple of days ago I happened to see local legend Mr. Bunny Ears standing at a bus stop. It was good to see him and his ears out and about. I used to see him fairly frequently, but haven’t seen him in person for quite some time. It’s good to know that he’s still kicking. That’s my post…thanks for reading.

Oshawa or Whitby?

Hello, my boyfriend and I both 22 are planning to move to Ontario in the spring (April/May) and I am looking for advice on which area we should look at moving to. We are looking for a cat friendly apartment in an area that has decent access to the essentials. We only have one car so public transit is also important. I have tried looking on subreddits but the opinions are so contradictory and feel very biased. I'm wondering what the pros and cons of living in Oshawa vs. Whitby are? Is the crime in Oshawa really as bad as people say? If you can also recommend neighbourhoods to look at/avoid that is appreciated.

Who decided to paint the fire hydrants white? That’s going to be a problem in winter with a lot of snow. Yellow looked better but well.

Sad to see a local dental office request a labour market assessment to hire a Dental Assistant.

Post image

I am not claiming without evidence. I am not putting lies or rumours. This is not bashing or doxxing. It’s a fact this office has requested this for a dental assistant job. Directly from the Government of Canada website. What confuses me is that there are many people attending Durham College for dental assisting and hygiene.

The office claims they can’t find someone already here to do this job, and thus needs the route.

Sorry for the bad photo quality.

Recycling blue bags

Hi, i have some recycling blue bags that were not picked up today, that I know have picked up before for months,  but now there's a note saying that you only do the blue bins. Why are we not receiving any notification on these changes? We've been having problems with this for a few times now and we don't understand what's going on. We have a "round" blue bin, but you won't pick up that one either. We only have two "big" bin, and a lot of small bins, and we gave a lot of recycling in our home that we have to deal with. Can you guys not decide on what can or can't be picked up or what?

NOTICE FROM DR. PASQUALINO MORRA

October 2, 2026

Dear Patients,

I write to inform you of an incident potentially involving your personal health information.

As you are likely aware, early in the morning on July 18, 2026, a sinkhole opened up below the parking lot at the Oshawa Health Center. Over that weekend of July 18-19, 2026, our office was the victim of a break and enter. We were informed of the break-in on or around July28,2026 and that we were unable to investigate the matter as the building was not safe to enter. On August 13, 2026, we were allowed to enter the premises with an insurance adjuster and were allowed back in on August 27, 2026, to further investigate the extent of the theft. The police were notified and are actively investigating and pursuing the perpetrators. The property was sealed off by a recovery company and 24/7 security was implemented.

Of relevance, hard drives from the echocardiogram server and a personal computer were stolen from our office. The hard drives contained videos from the ultrasounds of hearts. These files require specialized software to be opened. For this reason, we do not expect the thieves will be able to access these records. The personal computer contained Holter monitor data and pdf consultations reports for tests conducted over the past 20-25 years. The consultation reports included patient names, birthdates, health numbers and information from that consultation. This personal computer was password protected.

If you have received an echocardiogram or a Holter monitor test with our office, it is possible that some of your records were contained in the stolen hard drives and personal computer. While we do not expect that these records will be accessed or used by the thieves, we felt obligated to notify patients of this potential breach of personal privacy. We ask that that you please let us know if anyone contacts you purporting to have access to your personal health information.

As a precautionary matter, if you have received a Holter monitor test with our office, it is possible your health card number has been affected by this theft. You should call ServiceOntario INFOline at 1-866-532-3161 or 1-800-387-5559 to report your lost or stolen health card number. If you suspect misuse of your health card number, you can report suspected cases of fraud by calling the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care at 1-888-781-5556 or e-mail at reportohipfraud@moh.gov.on.ca.

You may also wish to review this publication from the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC), Identity Theft: A Crime of Opportunity.

We will be filing a report with the Information and Privacy Commissioner. As well, we wish to notify you that you are entitled to file a complaint to the IPC about this incident, should you wish to do so. More information on this can be found at the IPC’s website, ipc.on.ca/en.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me at morra1400@gmail.com.

Yours truly,

Dr. Pasqualino Morra

Any winter discount sales or winter wears donations?

I am an international student, last winter was hell for me because I have never experienced it. I had muscle contractions in my left thigh that period. I am preparing for the next winter but I need a place I can buy winter wears or if you know any place for donation.

Would you buy this house, and how much would you budget for the renovations?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

My husband and I are considering buying a semi-detached house in Oshawa. The roof, furnace, and central AC are reportedly from around 2000, so they're approximately 26 years old. The whole house is 1100 sqt ft. And the basement is 373 sqt ft.

We'd also like to renovate the basement, potentially to make it more appealing for rental income. We're considering adding pot lights, renovating the bathroom (it currently has a jetted tub but no shower), and improving the overall look of the space. And a small basic kitchen

For those who have bought or renovated similar homes in Ontario:
Would the age of the roof, furnace, and AC concern you, and how soon would you budget to replace them?
Based on a typical semi-detached house of this size, how much would you budget for the basement renovations, including pot lights and a bathroom renovation with a shower?
Would these improvements make sense if our goal is to rent out the basement?
Would you still consider buying the house, or would the potential costs make you reconsider?
We want to be realistic about the costs before committing and would appreciate honest opinions from homeowners who have been through similar renovations. Thanks
