Weekly Book Valuation Thread - w/c October 12, 2026
Welcome to the r/OldBooks Weekly Book Valuation Thread!
This is the place to ask how much an antique or vintage book (printed pre-1970) might be worth. Posts about book values will be redirected here.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Clear photos of the book (cover, back, spine, title page, any damage) will get you the best answers. Give as much detail on condition as you can!
- Everyone is free to comment here, and answers may not be from experts. For expert advice, contact an auction house with experience in vintage or antiquarian books.
- Book values are highly subjective. What one person might pay for a book, another may not.
- We don't allow buying or selling anywhere on the sub, including here.
A new Book Valuation Thread will be posted every Monday at 6pm UK time.

Please don't ask for help finding books or remembering book titles.
Hi all,
Just a reminder that this isn't the right place to ask for help finding or remembering a book. We remove a fair few of these posts so we've made a specific rule to make it clearer that these posts don't belong here.
If you need help remembering a book title, try r/whatisthatbook or r/findabook.

The Kiss That Killed by Gaston Leroux, Macaulay Co. New York 1934 First English Edition
We all know Phantom Of The Opera but have you heard about The Kiss That Killed? It’s about vampires, mass murder, love triangles, a serial killer! Topics we all know and love. Worn jacket but nothing too invasive to the art or spine, acceptable amount of wear but on the bright side it’s not price clipped. The book itself also has a story of adventures on its own.
Disclaimer the typed paper is laid in, it’s a book dealers catalog description from a book dealer previous to the one I purchased it from. I assume It’s still there to explain the inscription provenance details. So it feels natural to include it as a whole with the book and check. Harre has multiple titles of published Macaulay books, 5 that I know of he’s an author.

Another estate find
Been working through a big estate library and this one stopped me. Dryden converted to Catholicism and then wrote a 2,500-line poem defending it, where the Catholic Church is a milk-white hind and the Church of England is a spotted panther. A theological debate as a beast fable.
It caused a massive stir. Two young wits, Montague and Prior, wrote a parody called The Hind and the Panther Transvers'd that basically ended Dryden's reputation as a serious controversialist.
This is the Tonson first edition from 1709.

Euclid’s Elements 1565
Recently acquired the second translated edition of Euclid’s Elements translated and annotated by Niccolò Tartaglia in Venice. Mixing my interests of the Renaissance and math. I love this book.

Recently found “The Book Of Health” published in 1898!
I am super stoked about this find! I’m a nursing student so it’s extremely interesting to see all the medical inaccuracies by today’s standards. The brain diagram was particularly amusing to me lol

1940s Oral Trade Questions book CONFIDENTIAL
1940s book printed by us government leading up to the war, to help access trade persons skills and clarifications, as written exams weren't always an option. It was confidential so people couldn't prepare for the questions.

Lalla Rookh and Irish Melodies by Thomas Moore, 1817.
Found this one at a pre-loved bookstore during my last day in Istanbul before flying off to Ireland. (What a coincidence!) The previous reader left behind a dried flower.

Help, I ask the experts to determine my chances (probably negligible) of recognizing the owner of the classical monogram "RV/RU" (found on sheets of incunabula from Augsburg and Venice, 1496 and 1482; "General Cosmography" by Sebastian Münster; 1786s gravure by Reinier Vinkeles [he isn't the owner])

Charles Dickens book haul
I just got a stack of Charles Dickens books from an antique store and was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me what edition they are or any other information? They aren't all in great shape but as a book nerd I thought it was a cool find!

Japanese Fairy Tales by Yei Theodora Ozaki, 1903 A.L. Burt Company
Been struggling a bit researching this book and figuring out if its part of a series. Googling has led me to versions with same title and author but none with this cover. If anyone has any knowledge about this book, it would be amazing.

Oriental series Japan and China, satsuma edition. Copy# 286, copyright 1901
I discovered a long while ago we had this pre-world wars encyclopedia on japan and china sitting in our basement. For being in a basement its not in terrible shape and i figured it was time to see what other people think. We have volumes 1-12 with book #9 missing. Inside the first book i also discovered a long strip of perforated Japanese images of what i assume are historical figures.
Let me know what you think/ what i should look for. New to this subreddit so i hope this isnt the wrong place for this sort of thing

The World's Thousand Best Short Stories/Masterpiece Library of Short Stories. anyone know anything about these?
I just collected these gorgeous short story compendiums for free, and i cant find any dates anywhere in the books. it seems like these are special editions made after the original publication (which seems to be 1904 based on what i can find online?). i know very little about this kind of thing, so any help would be appreciated!
