Hey r/ONETREEHILL! Tory Cabrera here, Deputy Trending Editor at ESPN.

I recently traveled to Wilmington, North Carolina for the "Hey 23: A Call Back to Tree Hill" 23rd anniversary charity basketball game, where I got to experience the event firsthand and catch up with some of the show’s stars for my latest story.

I’m here to talk about the game, what it was like being there, give you all the scoop on the basketball component of the show, share behind-the-scenes moments and all things "One Tree Hill." Ask me anything!

Season 5 For all the Leyton shippers here i have a question

How did you feel when Lucas said i “do” to Lindsey at the alter? To me i felt so bad for Peyton and Lindsey cause he was practically betraying them both

Discussion Lucas’ number should have been retired

I watched the show a lot for the basketball aspect. It really irked me that lucas’ number was not retired. He was the second leading scorer on the team before his condition, then was a closer level sixth man. He was the MVP of the state championship game, kept tree hill in all game then hit the winning shot while being implied hes one of the best defenders on the team. For a school that never won one championship in their history they should have retired lucas scotts jersey too

Season 1 I get so mad when Karen says no to Keith

• Upvotes

Doing my annual rewatch. I’m on episode 18 when Keith proposes and I yell at the tv every time “YOU SHOULD HAVE SAID YES THEN, KaReN!!!”

Why did they kill Keith off anyway?

Discussion Peyton and Haley

why people are saying that they werent close or they werent friends? It was sooo freaking obvious they were, they just had little fall apart in s3, but besides that it was clear they were pretty close.

Season 3 grossed out by chris keller

• Upvotes

i’m rewatching for the first time since my frontal cortex has developed and just finished s3 e7. (spoilers ahead)

it’s the ep where they go on their fantasy football dates, so haleys w nathan and brooke’s w chris keller & chris was being gross (disgusting) all episode.

an example being when they were on the beach on their double date and he smacks a random girls butt. that’s assault 🙂

he’s extremely pushy with brooke, she turns him down numerous times but no doesn’t mean no to chris i guess. then they’re drinking in the apt and before anything even happened i literally thought to myself that if i was haley i genuinely wouldn’t leave my friend alone w a guy that’s been acting how chris acted all day.

THEN he’s pressuring her to DRINK, even after she comes to the revelation that lucas is the guy for her. then the plot twist is that they SLEEP together?!!!! after she’s been telling him to leave her alone all day and then pressuring her to drink???? hello?! watching this w my adult brain, how is this not coercion/ assault. i already know the show won’t treat it that way but im disgusted

Season 1 Should I stop watching the show?

Guys, I started One Tree Hill, a week ago, as a major fan of the "coming of age" genre (and pretty much being close to the age of the main characters, makes me watch them). My previous experience was Gossip Girl, which I watched all. Anyway, I started the show, and I’ve got to admit the first episodes were fire, right? But then, it all seemed real fast. Like, Nathan got along with Haley, Dan’s getting a divorce with Deb, Lucas who was my favorite character until now, screws Brooke in order to be with the love of his life who actually screwed him when he confessed his emotions abt her. Is it me, or it’s getting rapid fire? I mean, 3 seasons of another show happened in 16 episodes. And the whole basketball idea went wasted because nobody cares abt the game which was the actual point from the beginning. Don’t get me wrong guys, but I need your help on that one. I don’t watch series regularly but when I do, I wanna watch sth good. And it seemed that way, ngl. But does it make sense to watch it till the end or it gets completely ridiculous and nonsense? I know they are plenty of platforms like IMDb and stuff out there to get opinions but I think here I can find the OGs of the show, since the sub is still alive. I love pop culture and 00’s in general, so I would really like to hear your thoughts without spoilers.

PS. Sorry for the long text

Season 4 It’s been years and the Nathan/Brooke plot line bothers me so much Spoiler

Yes, it was in character for both of them to sleep around, party, get drunk and hook up with random people.

I know that Nathan was a raging asshole and I can totally see him hooking up with Brooke.

Brooke doing this makes no sense. She was promiscuous but I don’t for a second believe she would hook up with Nathan and NEVER tell Peyton about it. I know they use the excuse that she was drunk but I don’t buy it. She didn’t look that drunk and she even tells Nathan she was a willing participant.

I think she kept using the drunk excuse as a way to avoid accountability for her actions,

It would have come up and I actually think Peyton would have been understanding about it if Brooke had told her back then since Nathan cheated all the time and hooked up with the entire cheerleading squad.
It’s the fact that Brooke never ever ever tells her that’s the problem. There is no tension between Nathan/Brooke either. If Brooke actually did this she would have felt guilty about it and acted differently around him. They act like normal friends.

This was a forced plot line that was never planned because it just doesn’t make sense with the characters earlier interactions. Nathan was embarrassed when he had a dream about seeing Brooke naked in s2. This doesn’t make sense with knowing what’s to come where he made a sex tape with her.

The fact that this NEVER comes up is what bothers me. Brooke becomes really good friends with Hayley and still doesn’t tell her about it.

There is an entire plot point in season 2 where Nathan realizes he hooked up with Hayley’s sister. This was a major development and was made out to be a huge deal yet he fails to mention him hooking up with Brooke.

This plotline was written to put Brooke and Peyton on even ground and that’s it. I wouldn’t have minded Nathan/Brooke hookup plotline if it was written properly and not just something they shoehorned in for the sake of Leyton vs Brucas ship wars.

Just because it’s in character for both of them to do this doesn’t mean it’s a good storyline or makes sense at all.

Season 8 dan scott

***probably some spoilers here ….
I am a first time watcher and currently in the middle of season 8. dan scott was just introduced and it literally makes no sense! quinn goes to see him for advice on how to murder katie and he says he’s not a hit man but he’s literally acting like one!! he’s telling her what to do with the body and everything. i’m confused. the man killed one guy and didn’t even have to cover it up! it was easy for him to blame it on the kid with the gun since no one else saw it …“supposedly”. how would he even know how to cover it up and get rid of the body anyway?

there are other story lines with season 8 that just feel so off and really make no sense to me. not sure if it’s worth finishing 😭

Discussion Unpopular Opinion: I Think the Hate for Peyton and Lucas Is Overblown

You know, as much as I understand the hate they get, I honestly think people go way too far when it comes to Season 1. I genuinely believe everyone was in the wrong. Brooke knew they had feelings for each other and was actively trying to sabotage Leyton before she and Lucas even got together. That doesn't justify their cheating, but she's not the innocent saint so many people make her out to be.

Season 3 is more complicated, but I don't think Lucas cheated on Brooke. Peyton kissed him because she thought she was going to die, and he didn't even kiss her back. As for why he didn't pull away or tell Brooke, Peyton had just lost a mother for the second time, and he didn't want to risk making her lose the only support system she had left. Besides, Lucas has always been there for everyone else without letting anyone be there for him. Brooke even admits they broke up because he didn't need her the way she needed him. And honestly, throwing a party at the place where his uncle died? Brooke wasn't exactly great at supporting him either.

As for Season 5, I have no defense for them. They were awful, but I still don't think they deserve all the hate they get.

Discussion Numbers...

So this is a game where we go alphabetically and choose our favourite episode that starts with that letter (not my idea someone mentioned doing this in a different sub some time ago and I thought why not start this game when OTH started.)

Now this sub can be divided in a lot of things but we can all agree we love this show. So let's celebrate that.

I have made an google sheet with all the episodes. If you have suggestion on how to improve it do tell me. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lP_T7Y8EU94zc_Z_L4MhI2F-wT3KhhF9KE5qLzTCzl8/edit?usp=sharing

So I have made pages for each letter so it is easier to choose.

Hope this is a fun idea and we can all enjoy it.

Discussion Best Actor??? Or worst? Bring receipts!

Who does everyone think is the best actor on the show? Strictly talking about performance, without bias for favorite characters or story lines. Give examples!

I personally think a clear front runner is Paul Johansson. The way he makes you hate Dan, and yet feel bad for him at the same time. His performance with Whitey in the Cabin in season 7 stands out to me, but there are so many subtle moments that I think are so well performed that you miss them because they feel real and grounded.

Runner up is probably Sophia Bush. She’s able to show the most range IMO from sexy to silly or kind to mean, etc. Her performance in the season 3 finale in Peyton’s room and then with Lucas before their speeches gives me chills. Again, I think I forget she’s acting sometimes and that she is Brooke IRL.

I’m a Leyton fan in terms of storyline but I do think CMM and Hilarie are the weaker actors in the main cast, specifically. I can feel them acting a lot. Some examples are when he tells his mom Brooke might be pregnant, his puppy dog face and body language just felt overdone and it always takes me out of the moment. Or Hilarie during the psycho Derek attack. Her facial expressions and screams, etc. take me out of the story and remind me she’s acting.

What’s everyone else’s opinions though?

Discussion The heart of the series was the Scott Brothers

The heart of the series was the Scott Brothers and their dynamic.

Peyton and Brooke were my favorite characters but I’m not going to sit here and deny that the actual heart of the series was the relationship between Nathan and Lucas. The show opened with them and their two different worlds.

Seeing their bond and development was the best part of the show. It’s why s7-9 aren’t as good. It’s missing their brotherly bond and the basketball aspect of the show.

I liked the trajectory of their relationship and how realistic it was as well. They didn’t automatically become close and bffs. They didn’t grow up together so they didn’t have an an automatic close bond but it was more subtle. You could tell by the end that they loved each other.

I mourn the Scott brother bond more than any other relationship on the show. S7-9 would haven been 100 times better if we saw them together.

Season 1 Lucas is very understanding of Haley in S1. Am I wrong about this?

I have noticed watching the show a second time with some friends and reading youtube comments that a lot of people are SUPER harsh on Lucas when Hayley judges Lucas for dating Brooke but secretly being in love with Peyton. Some fans get mad that Lucas threw the fact that Haley decided to tutor and go out with his mortal enemy in the argument right back at her. This was the scene before Lucas and Keith crash. It should have been obvious to her that anyways from the start Nathan didn’t have good intentions coming to her for tutoring. We as the audience know Lucas is right. And Lucas had already accepted and been pretty quiet about his disapproval of Haley’s new BF for like eight episodes. He never crashed out on her. He told her how he felt about Nathan when she started dating him, but let it go because he could see how happy Nate makes her.

Yet some folks reaction to that scene is ‘no Haley’s right. Nathan is a good guy. Lucas is the bad guy because he likes Peyton even though he’s dating Brooke.’ Two girls Haley only just became friends with. She use to judge Brooke and Peyton simply for being cheerleaders. And then when Hayley is complaining to Nathan later that night about what a dick Lucas is becoming, Nathan laughed “how ironic.” Then Nathan let it slip that he did go after her originally to make Lucas mad. Even after that revelation the Lucas haters are like, ‘no Hayley stand your ground! You’re right! Lucas is scum for leading Brooke on. You and Nathan did nothing wrong!’

How does Reddit feel about the Hayley/Lucas/Nathan situation in the first half of S1? Did she have the right to call Lucas out for playing with Brooke and Peytons heart when she knew how awful Nathan and Dan were to Lucas yet she still tutored Nathan promising it was to protect Lucas. Then she dated him?

Discussion So much stolen from Everwood??

Omfg I know the show runners of teen dramas during that time were stealing ideas from each other left and right but it’s so clear after watching Everwood for the first time that Voldemort would just copy what he saw on Everwood for a future OTH season storyline. He even wanted there to be an old man narrator for OTH just like there was for Everwood when he pitched the show. I think he had a better team , actors/actresses and budget which made it a way better hit but Voldemort really is just a plagiarizer and all the beauty in the show came from other people.

Season 9 Omg Jamie With Lucas in Season 9 😭

So while season seven and eight suck season nine is worth it and I never thought I’d say this but I honestly love Dan right now. And OMG the scene where Lucas picks up Jamie from the airport right after Jamie tells his mom it’s gonna be OK and Nathan‘s gonna come home and then he like collapses and hugs Lucas as soon as his mom is out of sight 💜😭it’s like he was holding it in for so long trying to be strong for his mom but deep down he was still just a scared kid who missed his dad 😭

Season 6 I'm on season 6 and struggling to keep watching. Does it get better?

I've been trying my best to keep watching, but I'm on season 6 now and honestly, I'm not enjoying it that much anymore. I just watched the episode where Quentin dies, which was really emotional, but aside from that, I'm finding it hard to stay invested in the show.

At this point, I feel like I'm mostly watching for Brooke because she's the character I'm most interested in. I'm not particularly invested in the other storylines anymore, and I'm wondering if it's worth pushing through.

Does the show get better? Is it worth continuing, or should I just stop here?
